In today's french newspaper "L'Equipe", Olivier Pheulpin (french journalist living in San Antonio) write that Spurs want to sign Przybilla.

From what I gather from the www, Przybilla wants to wait until the end of the holidays to decide whether or not continuing his career. It could explain why Spurs take their time with adding another big. Anyway, he would be a very good signing for Spurs if they can get him.

He's so injury prone and close to done I'd still want to audition some younger athletes.

Not surprising if it's true. The Spurs went after him pretty hard back in 2006.

Heat, Clippers and Bucks are too after him:

I hope Spurs have some solid alternatives because getting Przybilla won't be easy.

Nice bruiser. Would really like him off the bench to lay the wood on someone. Could matchup well with Bonner, Blair and Splitter when TD is resting. Seems like a perfect fit for what we need. I would not want to drive the paint with Pryz, Splitter and Leonard on the floor.

It won't be an easy sell for the Spurs. He spent the first few years of his career with the Bucks and he has roots in the area (he's from Minnesota and his wife is from Milwaukee).

He's also coming off a major injury and has been contemplating retirement. How much time will it take before he's in basketball shape and able to take a place in the rotation? Is it even possible?

The player he was a few year ago, or a reasonable facsimile, would be a great addition for the Spurs.

Spurs need a big, who gives some more options on offense. considering Tim and Tiago are Centers (no matter what you call them) a starter quality PF with some offensive game is the only addition that would make an impact. if Przybilla signs for the minimum for one season, ok you just do this. but some teams will offer more (and/or offer a better chance for a ring, like the Heat)
and no, the Przybilla the Spurs wanted to sign in 2006 is NOT the same player. this player can't move any more, therefore will foul out at Mahinmi ratio.

If not Pryz, then what about Dampier? Isn't he still out there?

He could be a very good fit, that's for sure, and with Fesenko gone is one of the last names that make sense...but how Bruno pointed out, it won't be easy to sign him considering how much attention ha has already moved from other teams.

Economically, we have only the mid level to spend (3 millions), and probably all of the others have something money left more that than they could throw at him at least just for one season (pending the risk of his knees condition).

The reason we could attract him is that :

1) we definitely are a team in need of a big man with his skills : in S.A. he could have virtually no contender for the third big man spot;
2) we can still be considered a play off team with ambitions for winning it all;
3) most important, he could value how many minutes per game play : in case he proves to be healthy, in this season having playing minutes won't be a problem (while I see a lot more difficult to share minutes with other bigs in other teams. See the Heat - Haslem, Bosh, Anthony, Howard plus James, that looks like he's playing some minutes at power forward - and Bucks - Bogut, Sanders, Gooden, Brockman, Leuer; while the Clips have two very young guys like Jordan and Griffin that are gonna let only limited minutes to other bigs, like Cook, Evans or Thomkins).

Yes, it will... a little.

Adding him won't put Spurs back in true contention but it will give the team some welcomed depth at C. I don't see Pryz being more than a third string center who will get some minutes in case of injuries, foul troubles, Pop resting Duncan and against some teams like Lakers.

It's likely too late for Spurs to do a meaningful move. They had few trade assets and have wasted the best two (Hill and Dice) on moves that won't help the team short term wise.

If not Pryz, then what about Dampier? Isn't he still out there?

Dampier is another option. There are some rumors about Celtics being interested in him.

The Hill trade was not a waste. Yes it won't pay immediate dividends this year, but part of being a successful franchise is being to able to build for the future, as well as the present. I agree it was a waste not being able to trade Dice to help the team this year, but trading Hill for Leonard, Lorbek, and Bertans was a very good trade for the future, not a waste.

is there a good reason you keep talking up an attempted deal with Ed Davis? The Raptors don't want any of the Spurs' crap, not for a player as good as ED. No chance.

The Hill trade was not a waste.

I'm not judging the trade but I'm just looking at its short term impact and it's a negative one.

Spurs had few assets and have used none of them to improve this year's team. It quite shows that they have given up on winning a title right now. Drafting Cory Joseph instead of using the pick in a trade or drafting a college senior is also a bad move short term wise.

It's weird to ask about "good reason" to one of the most illogical poster on ST. :downspin:

Ideally, I'd want someone younger, more athletic and more spry, too. But as a fifth big, if he's able to hold up, there's no question he's better than any other big left on the market. He's not only huge, but he's an excellent rebounder and solid shot blocker. He'd allow them to start Splitter next to Duncan and have a solid backup center to go to against the bigger teams.

The good news is, the Spurs can offer more money than those teams if they so choose. The bad news is, him and his family still live in Milwaukee, so he'll probably sign with them. He doesn't strike me as the type who will chase a ring or go for a quick cash grab.

But you said the trade was a "waste". The trade was both a fiancial move, and a move for the future, so I don't see the trade as a wate. Because of the Spur's depth at the guard position, the Spurs could afford to trade Hill. Ginoboli, Neal, Anderson, and Ford can replace Hill's production imo. Even short term, because of the Spur's backcourt depth, there shouldn't be a problem replacing Hill's production.

But you said the trade was a "waste".

No, I didn't. I said that Spurs have wasted assets to do moves that are bad short term wise.

Hill, the 2011 first round pick, Dice's contract, the MLE, the amnesty rule... could have all been used to make the team better this year. None have been used in that way. In fact the only move Spurs do to improve this year's team was to sign TJ Ford. That's light, very light...

For the record, I do like the Hill trade.

the value of Dice's expiring contract was nullified by the amnesty rule. It allowed teams that would have wanted to save money on Dice's deal to just amnesty their way into saving money.

Did any final year partial guarantees get traded for salary dumping purposes this shortened free agency period at all?

Przybilla would be a good fit for what the Spurs could use in a fifth big. He can clog the paint, rebound, block some shots and he won't whine about minutes. Plus he's friends with Duncan so that'd be a plus.

It wouldn't be a huge move obviously but he's the option I like the best right now, even considering the fact that he may be done following the knee injuries.

Wishful thinking. I know the spurs like him as I speak to his father often. With big V coming in next year, and Johnson playing well, plus the fact they will likely end up drafting Durmmond or the big from Kentucky he could be had for the right price.

I would love to see him next to TD or Splitter.
Ed Davis seems a lefty? If we get him, we'll finally have another left-handed besides Manu. Then the left-handed club continues

Given the number of teams after him, it can't be the vet min surely.

I reckon Clippers or Bucks will get him.

I was about to start a thread on this guy, glad I didn't since we have a nice discussion going on here.

My biggest concerns are his age and his prior injuries. I know a few years back we pursued him pretty hard. If we end up getting him hopefully he isn't a shell of his former self.

But even with those concerns, we're pretty desperate for another big.

Hope he comes aboard.

I think if he has anything left in the tank, he could be of use to the spurs.

Also, does he live in Houston in the off season?
