SPURS FANS...

You guys are known as a knowledgeable fan base. As myself being a Piston fan (and one that thinks Ben Wallace is overated) I want to hear what you guys think about him? I cannot get an honest opinion on this guy from anyone in Michigan, because everyone wants to get down and give this guy a hummer.

I think he is HANDS DOWN the worst offensive starter in the league. He is horrindus on the offensive end. Man up, playing D, I mean when is the last time a Defensive Player of the Year has been called out by two people in back to back series? This guy cannot man anyone up that is worth a crap on the block.

However...Weakside Defender...maybe one of the best EVER. I have to give him credit there...the guy is amazing coming across the paint and helping out...

I am really curious to hear what you guys think

If Duncan had Ben Wallace next to him...everyone else would be playing for second.

The problem is that a great game from an offensive player will always trump a great defender. You have to look at Ben Wallace as how he fits in with the team. He might not be great elsewhere, but does well within his place.

The true test will be as Ben gets a little older/team changes - can he change his game to fit and still contribute? He's playing over his head with hustle, when he gets older can he still bring it? I think right now he's great, but when he loses a step his game is over.

I think he robbed Bruce for defensive player of the year. With that said, he's a tough SOB, one of the few who can look good trying to guard a gorilla like Shaq one on one. Offensively, he is godawful. Everytime I see him take a jumper I gringe because I know it's not going in. He can rebound, he can dunk, but that's about it on that end of the floor. And when he brings his hustle and energy he really elevates his whole damn team.

Hey now don't knock big Ben's offensive game. Hes no Wade or Shaq however he has the ability to put some good points on the board even with some 15 foot jumpers. He's scored 23 points in one game in the playoffs and close to 20 in a few other games. He was horrible against the Heat because he was so tired from being bullied by the big gorilla Shaq.

Wallace is a good off the ball defender but he's the fourth best on the ball defender on the Pistons at beast. I think it's pretty telling that a guy with no offense whois a defensive specialist won't be guarding Duncan because another Piston big man can do a better job. Can you imagine Rodman not guarding Duncan in his prime. Hell Rodman even drew Shaq and did a good job way back when.

Contrast that with Bowen who will get assigned the hottest Piston perimeter player, switched from Prince to Hamilton to Billups if needed. Wallace is big time overated and half his rep comes from his fierce looks.

Would you trade him for Rasho? :lol

Doesn't this thread sound like every Rasho thread we have?

Wallace is too short to play center, esp be a dominant big man, at Championship level, but he is a great leaper and positional rebounder and hustler. He's not very co-ordinated, as seen in his awkward movements and inability to shoot.

I think he is HANDS DOWN the worst offensive starter in the league. He is horrindus on the offensive end.

He's not even close to the worst starter in the league. Jason Collier and Obinna Ekezie each started over 30 games this season for the Hawks. Adonal Foyle started 50 games for the Warriors. Loren Woods started 30 games for Toronto. Tony Battie started 30+ games for the Magic. These guys are a lot worse offensively than Big Ben ... and not even close on the defensive end. Just appreciate Ben for what he is.

Another reason why the Pistons are going to struggle on the offensive end against the Spurs.

Piston fan can try to argue about Piston D and "passion" all they want but their offense is crap relative to the Spurs. It's bad enough they have no post game, but thanks to good old overrated Ben Wallace they will be playing 4 on 5 at the other end.

Then again, if Piston fan believes Sheed > Duncan perhaps they can start honing their David Stern centered conspiracy theories after the Spurs wrap this thing up in 5.

Wallace is a great defender, but him winning the DPoY this year seems to be on reputation alone. His weakside help defense is amazing, but his man to man defense is not on par with players like Bowen, Garnett and your other Wallace. To me, he seems like a better, more durable version of Theo Ratliff.
His offense on the other hand, is just terrible. I kept screaming at the TV whenever he tried to create his own shot. What the hell was he thinking? Just kick the ball out to Billups or Rip.

Unfortunately that also means the Pistons will be playing 4 on 5 against the best defense in the NBA. No amount of yelling and flexing is going to cover that up...

Sounds like a lot of the same concerns some Spurs fans have about Bruce Bowen. But I think each player epitomizes his team's brand of basketball. I do find Ben Wallace to be a bit overrated (I thought selecting him as DPOY was a lazy move on the part of the voters) but I still love his game and his passion on the defensive end.

Not a knock on Wallace, but a lot of "sportswriters" wouldn't know good defense if it jumped up and bit them on the ass, they're only trying to get some angle that will sell papers.

I totally agree with that statement. He has a good word-of-mouth rep as a defensive player (deserved), and I bet a majority of the voters never broke down any film whatsoever on Bowen, or anybody else as far as that goes.

then you are by no means a bandwagoner. Anyone who says so is an idiot. Keep on brother. I have major respect for any fan who sticks with their team even when that team is struggling and I know that between the Bad Boys era and now...there were some lean times in Auburn Hills. Well done.

I've been a Pistons fan since 1972. I remember Dave Bing's last days.

Elden had the luxury of fouling Shaq more. Ben Wallace had to defend Shaq and stay in the game.

I agree Ben is far from the best one-on-one defender in the league (or even on the team, when you look at Tay.) But he is unquestionably the foundation for the Pistons' team D; it's more than just the weak-side help, it's the boards and all the little things that don't show in the box score. So I guess it comes down to what you base the DPOY vote on; single-coverage ability or overall importance to one of the best (and quite possibly THE best*) defense in the league.

(* - I know, I know, save it. We'll find out for sure starting Thursday)

I think Ben is lucky to be in the right organization. Most other teams he wouldn't be a factor in. Not only the players but ESPECIALLY the coaches.

If he came up under Flip he'd probably beat out mark madsen for backup duty because he can't score.
