WTF was that refs? how does Gasol get away with choking Tim on that loose ball and then it gets called a jump ball!?
and then the jump ball is 20 degrees in favor of Grizzlies. wow that was the worst call in all my years of watching basketball and clearly gave the Grizzlies momentum. terrible. but glad we won in spite of it.
:flag:
The play before that, Gary Neal was driving into the paint and Gasol jumped in front of him at the last second. Neal bounced off of him, and instead of getting a blocking call, the refs called Neal for travelling. Those would have been fouls 5 and 6 on Gasol, too. I have to admit, the headlock no-call was choice. Gasol was behind Duncan and had no chance at the ball without going through Duncan's body. Some bad calls I can understand. Some I just can't figure out.
It's not some conspiracy against the Spurs, though. Indiana got screwed out of Game 1. The Knicks got screwed out of Game 1. Denver got screwed out of Game 1 so badly the league office had to admit it publicly. I'm sitting here watching the the Lakers get by with murder, and the refs are obviously having a tough time counting to 3 seconds.

You expect that for the home team in the playoffs. First ballot HOF PF Tim Duncan couldn't get a call tonight with Gasol mounting him from behind and putting him in a headlock :td

+1. In these past 2 games you would think that Marc Gasol is a fucking 7-time NBA champion and MVP the way he's getting a bunch of calls....

Bad call but understandable. Tim's head is very round and can easily be mistaken for the ball.

The officiating was utterly atrocious, especially by that puny ref. Hopefully the Spurs get at least one competent, honest crew in one of the two games in Memphis.
dont forget about the goaltend. these fucking refs suck!

Neal actually ran into Marc with the ball instead of with his body, and he wasn't shooting. He was just out of control. I don't blame that on the refs.
The Laker game... that's another story.

+1. I don't get it either. Right after that bucket, there was a timeout on the floor. Couldnt the refs check that during the timeout or not?

Exactly.
EX FUCKING ACTLY
What the hell is the point of "home court advantage"??? What the fuck does home court mean?
It means getting favorable calls and having things flow your way.
The Spurs could win ten championships in a row, have the 1 seed, and still would get crap calls from the refs in the first round against a STAR-LESS 8 seed.
I couldn't believe Tim Duncan fouled out tonight, I just couldn't. Just like in Game 1 when Tim picked up two quick bullshit fouls I couldn't believe it.
You would think the Spurs are big nobodies, with no stars, no resume. It's sickening.

Dude I swear that Gasol had the hooks in and was going for the rear naked choke on that play. Dana White would have signed him up in a heartbeat with that type of jujitsu. Pretty amazing that a play that looks straight out of MMA doesn't get a foul called at home when you're a first ballot HOFer.
In game 1, they call 2 screen fouls on TD..one of those fouls was from just sticking out his butt a little bit. Again, these god damn fucking referees suck monkey balls!

The refs were clowns. There were TWO missed goaltend calls on Memphis in quick succession, the first defensive and then a moment later an obvious in the cylinder putback that was not called. There was also an atrocious out of bounds award to Memphis in the second half. It wasn't one of those difficult ones where it just grazes a player and doesn't change direction. The ball hit the Memphis player's leg and shoe top, changed direction about 30 degrees and went out of bounds.

That's actually a foul and should be called. I know Boston has it in every play, but it is a foul.
Sad thing here is the Spurs are going to play in Memphis the next 2 games now. Homecooking looming on the horizon...

If they call that weak shit on HOFer TD then call the other weak shit too on the Grizzlies.

Just off the top of my head...
Two goaltends, one defensive, one offensive. Both of which were pretty obvious.
Memphis misses a shot early that bounces over the backboard, no whistle, Spurs lose the rebound out of bounds.
Memphis double dribbles, again, prety obvious to me.
End of quarter (don't remember which), Memphis misses the rim and gets a 24 second violation with about three seconds to go, refs don't blow the whistle. Spurs should have had the ball inbounds to get a decent shot.
The sequence with Duncan getting headlocked, and the ref throwing the ball behind Gasol was completely laughable.
Duncan's fourth, fifth and sixth fouls.
This was a fifteen point win that was made much closer than it should have been. This is why teams have to hit their free throws, make smart plays, and take care of the ball.

And is there anyone that thinks if a Spur had thrown the ball against the backboard support that he wouldn't have gotten a technical?

The Gasol horsecollar non-call was total BS. Gasol should've fouled out before Tim.

Randolph and Gasol were all over the back all game long.
Officiating in the NBA sucks. Make up calls, the infamous star treatment for perimeter player du jour (Jordan, Kobe, Durant, Wade, James, et al), 2003 Lakers-Wolves, 2002 Kings Lakers, and there oh so fucking transparent attempts to even out number of fouls called time and again.
You know the last is true when the common refrain about one team got more FT than the other being unfair and out of character.
since when do both teams in any sport foul virtually the same amount of times? its fucking stupid. A more disciplined team is going to foul less. thats how it goes but there they are once again deep throating the whistle.

There is no rhythm to the calls in the playoffs. Trying to let the teams play has turned into an on court brawl in all games. The teams that are last to the fight are the first ones eliminated. I understand playoff basketball, but this is starting to look like street ball.

That was ridiculous. You can hear the shot clock buzzer before a shot is even released (Memphis guys was going up to shoot, but hadn't released it IIRC), it doesn't touch the rim, Spurs get the ball and then a second or two later the quarter end buzzer goes off. I was suprised no one argued that.

Thanks. That pretty much is how I recalled it. Apparently home court advantage only applies to the crowd for the Spurs.

this is the worst officiating in the nba PERIOD.
-refs have been whistle happy every game
-refs trying to dictate the games outcomes
-refs not consistent what-so-ever

By the way, I remembered the 24 second violation wrong. Battier still had the ball in his hand when the buzzer went off, but they didn't call it. Spurs would have gotten the ball at halfcourt with over three seconds, more than enough time to get a quality shot.

Thank you. Sorry for posting the above before I saw this. It seemed shockingly obvious. I credit the Spurs for not letting the officiating get to them.
I've watched the Spurs for a lot of years, and I don't remember home fans getting that angry at the officiating. Ever. This keeps up and we might have our first "ref you suck" chant at AT&T. When that happens, a part of me will die.

Making that call of a jump ball, letting Gasol jump instead of Battier and then throwing the ball up so poorly that Gasol had to turn around to touch it was an embarrassing sequence for the zebras. Gasol has gotten a half dozen calls that weren't even close, and that was in San Antonio.

Have the refs always been this bad in the playoffs, or is it just this year? Seems there have been alot of complaints latelly.

Happens anytime people are watching the game more closely.
To see how real or unreal it is, watch two teams you really don't give a shit about. That way you can see if the calls are going one way. Bias leads us to see everything going against us, and we ignore the gifts.

I think the refs were better 20 years ago. The league and the owners have spent too much time fucking with things, and fans spend too much time whining about conspiracies.
The funny part was seeing Tim trying to calm Pop about the no-call. He could see the Refs were teeing up.
Oh, I'm glad you reminded me of that. One of the funniest moments of this season. Pop was about to get T'd, and Duncan came over and acted like he was having a discussion with him, and nodded his head like he'd gotten an answer from Pop.
Then Timmy turned to the ref and said, "He didn't mean it."
It was beautiful. We were laughing our asses off, and I'm guessing the ref probably caught the humor and backed off. I have zero doubt he saved Pop a technical that would have been a big deal with the score so close.
If anybody can get a cliip of it, I would LOVE to have it.

For all that Duncan had to complain, he didn't this one time. And yeah about that free throw, considering how close the game was one free throw could have changed everything if more fluke shots fell for the Grizz.

I'm certain we had one back in Game 2 of the Spurs/Mavs series a few years ago. Actually, I think that might have been a "Fuck you ref!" chant. I know we've had at least 1 anti-ref chant at the AT&T Center during the playoffs in the last 5 years.
