My understanding is that Duncan can retire and the Spurs organization can choose to pay him his salary even if he does choose to retire. He only forgoes his salary if he files retirement with the league. I'm pretty sure the Pacers did this the year after Reggie Miller retired, granted it was something like $8 million, not $20 million.

As for Kobe being on top of his game, that's horse shit. He's definitely on his decline. And the difference between him and Duncan is that Duncan only has one year left on his contract, and Kobe has three years and $82+ million left on his.
