LOS ANGELES -- DeShawn Stevenson (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/808/deshawn-stevenson) promises that the Mavs won’t be punked when he’s on the floor.

Stevenson might not follow Matt Barnes (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/1765/matt-barnes) on Twitter, but he’s well aware of the Lakers reserve’s tweet that declared the blueprint to beating the Mavs is to “PUNK ‘EM.” That, according to Barnes, is exactly what happened when his ’07 Warriors squad eliminated the 67-win Mavs in the first round.

Stevenson, the rugged shooting guard, wasn’t on that Mavericks team and neither was Tyson Chandler (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/984/tyson-chandler). Stevenson is quick to remind that those two, who can be considered the Dallas’ enforcers, weren’t on the floor when Barnes shoved Jason Terry (http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/841/jason-terry) during a brouhaha the last time the Mavs faced the Lakers.

The Mavs won’t do anything stupid, Stevenson said, but they’re not about to let the Lakers push them around, either.

“We want to win a championship,” Stevenson said. “We don’t want to fight and do all that. At the end of the day, we’re basketball players, but as long as me and Tyson are on that court, we ain’t gonna get punked.”

Chandler agrees that it’s up to him and Stevenson to set a physical, aggressive, energetic tone. The big man basically shrugs off all Barnes’ barking.

“There’s been so much talked about throughout our entire season about being punked and being soft, but to me, we’re basketball players so how much punking can you really do?” Chandler said. “It’s all about how hard you get out there and play. When the other team gets aggressive, do you back down or do you stand up and get more aggressive?”

Stevenson vows to stand up, and he expects the rest of the Mavs to be right there with him.

He will likely get an increase in minutes, but still wont quite finish games. His size will come in more handy against the Lakers than it would have against Portland. He gives Kobe a little bit of different looks than Marion. He tends to give up long 2s but closes out quick enough to bother the shot a bit, while Marion is more aggressive and plays up on his guy, bothering them with his length, but at times will get beat off the dribble because of that. Stevenson doesn't often get beat off the dribble, and usually when he does, he will usually give a solid foul to prevent an easy bucket.

Simply put:

Stevensons defense = based on smarts and physicality

Marions defense = based on athletic ability and annoying the opponent

Chandler and Stevenson are bad men, I doubt the Mavs will "get punked" but they're really gunna have to play all out in this series. They have a much smaller margin for error than the Lakers do. If Kobe has a bad shooting night there are plenty of other guys that can step up. If Dirk has a bad shooting night things get ugly. I don't really see anyone on the Lakers who can stop Dirk though tbh.

tbh Dirk had bad shooting nights for almost the entire series against Portland, and they still outplayed Portland for about 90% of the series.

Granted, the Lakers are a different animal, but Dirk finds ways to still make his presence felt on the game even when his shot is not falling. Teams are still always scared shitless of him and all 5 defenders are keeping an eye on him at all times. In addition to that, he has been aggressively attacking the bucket and getting to the FT line more than he ever has. If he keeps it up, Mavs will really make this a tough series for the Lakers. And make no mistake, Dirk knows the opportunity presented here. I think he will do everything he can in his power to win the series, more than anytime before. Win or lose, expect maybe Dirk's most epic playoff series ever, and he has had plenty of those.
