has the story where humans get in the middle of this long ongoing struggle (eons), and there is some powerful relic or weapon or something built by some powerful but somehow extinct race for use against some powerful evil. and there's usually a prophecy of some sort...

why can't anyone write an original story/plot arc for a sci fi game?

Deus Ex?

Half-Life?

Sins of a Solar Empire?

Eve Online?

Dead Space?

Portal?

Metroid?

System Shock?

But yeah, other than that, not too many classics. Oh, except for XCom. And Killzone. And Battlefield 2142. And Rachet & Clank.

There aren't any original plots left. All that people can do now is just make different interpretations of the old plots. Must be tough to be a writer or a creative thinker.
