My wife's hotmail account she has used for ages appears to be compromised. I, along with quite a few of her friends and coworkers have recieved emails sent from her account with the title "help" in them about how she is stuck overseas and was robbed, etc...

They are from her account, and signed with her name at the end.

Tried to log into her account just now, and cannot...so it appears the password has been changed.

Ive ran virus scanning and it found nothing (of course) I reset our bank password already just to be safe. But if it is a keylogger, i guess it probably doesn't matter. Notified hotmail, but not sure what else to do...any ideas?

Exact same thing happened to my cousin who lives in Cleveland about a year ago. Just so happens she also owns a home in London and was staying there, causing a lot of her stateside friends much worry. Police told her it's a common virus hack and has been under investigation for a long time. She called and checked all her accounts and nothing else was compromised. The funny part was that a few of her friends didn't even pay attn to the address the email wanted the money sent to and sent money to her real address. She begrudgingly gave them back their money :lol

If it infected your browser cookies preferences uninstall Firefox and remove "all files"

if it infected your pc Avira has a cool feature that blocks unauthorized mail/searches

if its attacking your DSN / IP then it doesn't really matter what you do the infection is waiting for you when you sign on.

Empty your DSN cache and install this to protect your IP

Also i heard some good reviews on this issue using AVG and malwarebytes

Getting her email address is easy as pie, probably used a password generator to hack the account....
