View Full Version : Bonner: a classic case of mental disadvantage

While athletic ability is essential to success at the NBA level, Michael Jordan and others like him have proved conclusively that you need a mental edge to really compete, especially in the playoffs. Players get into their own heads and destroy their own games, and this can all happen in minutes and last over long stretches depending upon the player.
Althouth the Red Rocket is a likeable guy and a great shooter, he was born with the mental disadvantage of self-sabotage. Bonner is one of the most obvious examples in the league of a player who psyches himself out at the most inopportune times and finds ways to choke. He seems to have one of the most fragile self-confidences I have ever seen. To make matters worse, Bonner also lacks athletic ability to compensate for this mental disadvantage. Others Spurs players this year were not far behind the Red Rocket in the mental weakness category.
We need more players like Neal and Manu and Bonner/others like him need to get confidence therapy or perhaps pop needs to realize who is who and use this as one of the major criteria for giving or taking away precious minutes.
A Matt Bonner thread and the first sentence references Michael Jordan; good luck Matt :wow :p:
Playoffs? What do you mean? He couldn't even shoot with the grizz d, and when he did, he did pretty well this year

Pop is just selling tickets when he claims spurs goal is a championship. Obviously, it hasn't been for years, since bonner got here and started getting 20 minutes a game.

I really kind of like Matt Bonner and there's no doubting his stroke, but he's a third string player at best and his defensive limitations are glaring. The Spurs need a defensive big 6-10+, whether it be Tiago or someone else. It's not working out with Bonner on the floor at any time.

And that will be the que for fans or Pop to want him played more next year because of that, good lord when will this end damnit :lol:depressed:depressed. He is not a player, he is a shooter who shoots well for half or so of the season, otherwise he gets way too many mins and starts to miss later.

I agree fully, but I don't like BONNER ONE BIT as your first sentence says for you lol.

fuck him! get him off the roster already, but then again his contract is shit and it's not gonna be easy to move this no-spine-having sissy. wtf!? how many playoff games is bonner gonna get to prove he just doesn't have what it takes in big game scenarios?

Single-issue poster is worst poster on the entire board. Most likely a Laker fan.

Is it possible that Bonner has true tenure, somewhat like Jerry Sloan had in Utah fof 30 years?

Bonner salary next year: $3 million
Blake salary next year: $4 million
I would take Bonner every day of the week over Blake.

I don't blame Bonner, He works hard despite his physical limitations, may it be at rebounding or at defense. I like him in a Spurs uniform for around 12 minutes a game to space the floor and give the starters rest.
What I don't like though is Pops decision to play him 20+ minutes a game, that's just ridiculous! So if anyone's blaming Bonner, blame Pop instead.

I could tolerate him at about 6-8 minutes a game MAX between the end of the 1st quarter and the start of the 2nd. And that's only if matchups allow it. Bonner's ginger ass should be stapled to the bench after the 1st half ends.

^^^ Yeah, I guess two to three minutes at the end of quarters depending on the match-up + garbage time is tolerable.
The problem is unless the Spurs find someone to start with Timmy, (not the undersized Blair or the retiring Dice, ergo Tiago or someone we can trade for), Pop will continue to give him generous amount of minutes no fan wants.
The two scenarios are either trade Matt or get someone who can start with Timmy and clog those minutes. I would hope we can get someone rather than trade Bonner, the guy is likable and believe it or not, Spurs material.
