2011 is the 50th anniversary of the "Freedom Rides."

There's a pretty amazing documentary on tonight at 8PM (and I'm sure later on PBS's website) which documents the journey from Baltimore to their ultimate destination of New Orleans.
I had a chance to catch it in its entirety in February for school. The author of one of the only books to document the rides spoke at USC as well as several of its participants.
I had heard of the event and knew that there was violence involved, as many of the events during the era, but seriously not to this extent. Out of serious control. The film broke my heart. Seriously worth catching or DVRing.
The website is very detailed and has some awesome info too..
