How often are the CoY winners exposed as just lucky recipients of great talent?

Let's count them:

Mike Brown
Avery Johnson
Scott Brooks
Mike D'Antoni
Byron Scott

There are more, but just look at these guys who couldn't coach a little league game. I almost expect to see Vinny there soon.

These are guys who, without their star turnaround year, did absolutely not a fucking thing noteworthy and got fired (Brooks is probably next).

Why couldn't Pop be on that list.

Because Pop won 4 rings with different squads after his CoY win, because his team has made the playoffs for what, 12 or 13 consecutive years, and because the Spurs had the highest win percentage in pro sports for like 10 years.

The year Pop won wasn't the big turnaround year. It was the championship year of 2003.

Must strongly agree with this thread and add Thibodeau to the list. This series he has been beyond attrocious, not to mention he struggled in rounds 1 and 2. Yeah, he is a great D coach like Mike Brown but like Mike Brown he sucks at offense and is a shitty playoff coach when it comes to making adjustments.

COY has pretty much been a curse since 2003:

2004 - Hubie Brown - lasted 12 games the next season before being gone
2005 - Mike D'antoni - All downhill after his COY award, ended on horrible terms with Phoenix
2006 - Avery Johnson - Ended on horrible terms with his team 2 years later
2007 - Sam Mitchell - Fired early in his 2nd season after winning COY
2008 - Byron Scott - Also fired in his 2nd season after winning COY
2009 - Mike Brown - :lol
2010 - Scotty Brooks - a year later is viewed as an incredibly weak coach

COY often goes to a team that overachieved and had a fluke good year. They often have gimmicky coaching styles/systems that have great short term results in the regular season but horrible long term results.

also it's ridiculous to give COY or even MVP before the playoffs. What a stupid fucking way of giving awards. At least rename them to Coach of the Regular Season and Regular Season MVP

Phil Jax won only once with the 72-10 Bulls '95/'96 team. Pop won only once. Larry Brown won once which is ridiculous too. Tomjanovich, Sloan or Adelman never won that award. Doc Rivers won once, one would think it was the season the C's won the championship, but no, he won it when he coached the Magic to 41:41 record to miss the playoffs.

Even being an regular season award, there is no logic. It's more like most improved coach or coach revelation award.
