even though Terry/Barea/Peja played like dog shit, it's Dirk's job to demand the ball and keep these morons from taking bad shots.
Dirk played like Terry usually does by racking up the points when the game is out of reach. Dirk put up a decent statline but he was not nearly as aggressive as he needed to be.

I'd still blame Terry and Barea, but I agree that Dirk was too passive..he stat-padded in the last 2 minutes of the game, other than that, he didn't even attempt to take over..Miami was making an effort at sending help, and he seemed content to accept the help and get others involved, which won't work, when your teammates are mediocre..

Dirk could have been more aggressive and it still would not have mattered when 'bron and D-wade are both playing out of their minds.

I think it's the battle on the boards that cost them, they gave out 10 extra possessions to Miami. That's huge in a game like this. They did more than enough on both offense, and especially defense, to win the game even with all the wide open shots that Terry and Peja missed. Chandler but also Dirk have to fight harder down there.

Yeah, he shot like...39%? He was missing shots that he usually makes. We'll have to see if it was a bad game or if the Heat's defense is bugging him. I'm inclined to say defense was bugging everybody, except James. Pretty poor shooting % from both teams.

Dirk let people take shots away from him. He strayed from the ball. It looked like 2006/2007 all over again. He looked like Bosh looked against Boston, until the last minute when it was already over.
If he plays like this the rest of the finals there's nothing he will ever be able to do to live down the choker label. We were all ready to give him his due and anoint him after the West playoffs, even after all his past failures. He looked ready to give it all back.
Long series though. I'm hoping he can get back to "Fuck you" mode cause if he doesn't it will be disastrous for the Mavs and his legacy.

Exactly.
Don't get me wrong, there were times where he looked like the player he is capable of being, but just too passive down the stretch. If this was a regular season game, I probly wouldn't care but this is the fucking Finals and you've got to really elevate your game and make your mark on NBA history. It's not gonna be easy. I've seen plenty of times where Dirk would take over games (pretty much the entire 09 Denver series, game 6 last year vs SA) and his team literally gave him nothing. Tonight, he didn't even try to take over when it mattered.
I have no idea if it will be good enough anyway, but there's no way this series will go past five if we get the same complacent Dirk the rest of the way

They are trying to hide Dirk on defense and if they do that, he has to rebound. If just improves that (he has been just awful on the glass), Dallas will be in a good spot.

This loss was not on Dirk.
It was on the absolute shite play of Peja, Barea, and the rest of the role players. Rebounding for the Mavs was horrendous as well, and Miami isn't even that great of a rebounding team. No excuse for a team with Chandler in the middle to be giving up that many rebs.

I don't think Dirk played as passive as people say, he played like he ussually does (within the rythm of the offense), he just didn't shoot the ball like he has done during this season.

It's good to see a fellow like Bosh deny Media their onions like he has. They were gonna high tech lynch his ass, but, he double crossed 'em, left 'em with their dick in their hands.
Bully. Bully for Bosh.

Yeah, I made a mistake. What else is new? All the Dirk and Mav haters are jizzing tonight. I just took a xanax so I'm kind of mellowing down. And I've recently started to reconsider suicide. And before you bitch me out or call me a pussy, this has nothing to do with the Mavs. I'm miserable right now in my life and I'm starting to come to a breaking point. I'm stuck at a dead end job with shitty pay and I get treated like a piece of shit too there. No respect at all. I am a hopeless piece of shit and prick. I wasted 5 and a half years in college in the hopes of possibly getting a good paying job or at least a decent paying job. I've been stuck in retail for almost 3 years making a whopping 15K a year. How am I ever going to be happy making shitty money like that? Sorry for the rant, I think it's the xanax kicking in.

Barea did seem pretty tentative, which is something we rarely see
imho it seemed like Barea was trying to avoid contact last night the same way 4>0 Rings avoids a treadmill
Barea did seem pretty tentative, which is something we rarely see
He still managed to put up 8 shots. The athleticism of the Heat is probably why he seemed tentative. He's trying to get his shot off.

Dirk could have played better but if Terry, JJ and Peja don't shoot a combined 3-21 we have a much better shot at this. Besides the semi-concerning torn tendon in Dirks finger, Im not that worried about what I saw in game 1.

Nowitzki did look a little passive at times. He missed a couple of shots he makes more often than not, he blew two layups in the first half and he should have rebounded better (I can remember him taking one contested board and giving up four or five).
That being said, he wasn't the only one giving up rebounds, and other people were missing shots much more open than the ones he had.
Terry and Peja will have to make some semi-contested threes in order for Dallas to have a shot (because Kidd can't do that), and Barea will have to be able to finish better in the paint than he did in Game 1.
The thing is, the Heat defense is head and shoulders above anything other teams are playing in these playoffs. As long as they have that, they will just have to hope for "normal" production out of their Big 3 to be in a position to win every game. Dallas will have to play pretty much flawless in order to have a shot, and I don't see them doing this four times out of seven.
By the way, I really enjoyed Game 1. Very good game by Miami for the most part, really decent defense and at times great ball movement by Dallas.
Um, all this about Mavs can play better which is true but Miami also played like shit. They will play better...

Dirk needs to step up and defend Bosh. Dallas can't afford having TC sucked out of the paint by Bosh's midrange game and racking up fouls due to his quickness, he needs to be down there for rebounding/help defense.

Dirk wasn't superman last night & it's unfortunate that it's going to take a super human performance from him for the Mavs to win where areas Lebron can get by with a good performance with Dwayne Wade having his back.

You can't risk Dirk being in foul trouble. That is the one thing for sure they can't overcome.
Dallas's defense wasn't the problem, it was the fact Dirk had a very important job to do and he failed: Rebound. It is absolutely pivotal that he hits the glass hard.
His offense was good, but he really did a poor job on the glass despite ending up with 8 boards.

Even if he puts more effort on the glass, Dirk still doesn't represent the prescence that Chandler does for opposing players slashing to the basket. I agree with DoK I would put Dirk on Bosh.
Dallas needs Chandler to be Chandler to have a chance.

That might be true, but Nowitzki defending and rebounding better won't be enough to get Dallas over the hump against the Heat.

No not Dirk but TC. He had only 4 boards in 30 plus minutes and is definitely one of their better rebounders.

That's in part 'cause he had to defend Bosh out on the perimeter, and that happens 'cause Carlisle didn't want to put Dirk on Chris.
