in the years before the mavs O was solely built upon jump-shooting, of which 3 pointers made a big part. jump-shooting teams never won championships, they knew that so they changed their game alot. they seems to play some decent inside game now, jumpers are not their 1st choices of attacking and dirk is no longer the soft shooting guard he used to be. meanwhile, their D has also improved alot from the past years, especially this season they're a even top 5 defensive team thanks in majority to the TC signing.
based upon the playoff stats of past seasons since 07, no one expected the mavs to go this far before the playoffs began. the mavs success this season may be a bit of a surprise, but it ain't no accident.
WRONG BOUT DEM MAVS
the mavs didn't see much of a contest the previous rounds, tbh, and it seems their form keeps getting better as the playoffs go deep. after winning the series 4-2 over portland, they only lost ONE game in the next two rounds- sweeping the defending champs 4-0, winning the WCF 4-1 over OKC.
their O had been great in the previous 3 series, a perfect mixture of jumpers, 3 pointers and cutting-insides. when the game comes to the NBA finals, however, they all seem to have lost their shooting hands. seeing a mav player standing at the arc (sometimes wide open) with the ball in his hand, its easy to notice the lack in confidence in his face, even if it seems a real good chance.
dem all be hesitant at the 3pt line imho. when peja was subbed in, it was for no other purpose but 3 pointers. peja played real bad in game 1, and it seemed to have affected his teammates as well. they all seemed feared of shooting 3 since dat game imho.
heat are rather weak in the paint, which is their only weaklink maybe, so it ain't bad strategy to attack paint more. however, it doesn't mean we should abandon 3 pointers, at least we need them to space up the 3-sec zone so the slashers can cut into the rim much easier.
