View Full Version : Kobe's SAT's were pretty high compared to Bron and Wade

I'm unsure of the correlation between basketball IQ and SAT scores but Kobe's score was dam good considering he wasn't going to college. Under the old format Kobe scored 1080 out of 1600 and some say he took it under the pre 1995 format putting his score closer to 1200.

Now let's look at the competition. :lol

Initially D-Wade failed to post a qualifying score so ultimately its safe to assume he ended up probably around the 700-800 range. :lol I hear he sealed his records after the first test...:lol

I hear Lebron scored 870 out of 1600. :lol

And last on my report but not least Jason Kidd and Deshswn Stevenson scored around 480 after the first time.:lmao

Besides we all know these gorillas can only run, dribble, and shoot. Who cares what their SATs scores are. If anything, lower SATs scores are better and guarantee a more exciting player.

Yeah, I guess that could make sense since the test changed in March 1995. That seems like a pretty early time to take the test though since even the Ivy League schools didn't require you to apply until the end of October/beginning of November of senior year.

Oh the good ol' days...when coming to take the SATs when hungover...I don't hold much stock in it these days as I think standardized testing measures only a part of what makes up intelligence. It's not a surprise that athletes score lower when you take into consideration their schedule and wanting to perform for cash money.

1080 isn't that high. I know I'll get flamed for this "internet genius"-type post, but I scored 1280 on my SAT. (Down from 1360 on my PSAT.)

I hate the new format, because I have no way to tell how much smarter I am now compared to people who take the new format.

Assuming that the population is staying at the same level of intelligence (and we know this is not true as kids are getting smarter and smarter due to increased exposure to technology and information), percentile will give you an indication of how you did against your peers.

For example, if you finished 1280/90th percentile in your SAT, and some kid got the equivalent of 1300/88th percentile in his/her SAT, you can still claim you finished better because you did 2 percentile higher than him/her relative to your peers, and arguably took the more difficult test.

Kobe took the pre-1995 format in 1996?
2005 was the year they added a section I think. He took the SAT I which was out of 1600. 1080 in 1996 was above average but nothing special. I think the scores have trended up in the last decade or so though. At least he would have gotten into some schools legitimately.

Just finished watching Spike Lee's documentary on Kobe. What stood out to me was how intelligent he obviously was, with the sheer depth of his basketball IQ being on full display throughout. So I did some research to see how his basketball IQ actually correlated with his cognitive abilities. And then I found this thread. On Google.

Kobe's 1080 SAT score gives him an equivalent IQ of 115, which (given a standard deviation of 15) puts his IQ at the threshold of above average and puts him above 83% of the population. That, coupled with the fact that Kobe was an honor student in high school, and the evidence is pretty compelling that at least part of Kobe's basketball intelligence can bet attributable to his cognitive abilities.

Then again, Matt Bonner's SAT score is 1350 which turns out to an equivalent IQ of 134, which is above 99% of the world population (well, 98.8% to be precise). And that hasn't really translated into an otherworldly basketball IQ.

Son, i just want to say this: if you use a knowledge based test to measure (abstract) IQ then you are one dumb beans consumer.
Any trained monkey can do 80-85%+ on the sats.

it's true that the SAT is not an IQ test. However 1080 is definitely good enough to get you into many colleges and 1350 is very good.

As to whether IQ and/or achievement in school translates to basketball... well... I don't want it to sound like anything but I can use myself as an example. I'm pretty much near genius level, got 1550 on my SATs, and IQ tested in the high 140s. I played HS ball and lots of pickup in college against D1 level players. I actually found being really smart as a disadvantage, because (a) I was not used to not being better than others, and (b) I found myself overthinking things. I needed to learn to turn off my cognitive brain and play with my motor/animal/instinctive brain, and get in the flow and react. Also I had to learn to talk in very simple (to me) terms to my teammates. It's been a really positive growth experience for me over the years to work on these things.

The SAT I is an aptitude test, not a knowledge-based test. It measures the same underlying congnitive abilities as an IQ test, which is why the two tests tend to correlate will with one another.

Interesting, though it's a subjective experience that's pretty hard to quantify, obviously.

That said, though I do agree with your assertion that basketball IQ (as far as knowing how to read an react to situations on the court) seems to be more instinctual than it is cognitive / rational, I do have to ask: didn't your intelligence help you when you were doing things like grasping the complexities of an offensive set or trying to understand the nuances surrounding how to defend your opponent when reading their scouting report?

:lol:lol:lol

I can't stop laughing at this whole post, are you autistic?
And IQ of 140+ is within the "Genius" threshold, and an SAT score of 1550 is enough to get you into most elite colleges (barring other factors like extracurriculars). Just because someone is smarter than you doesn't mean you have to resort to ad hominem attacks against them.

Not even where I was going with that.

1) I'm laughing at the idea of anyone being a self proclaimed genius on the internet--true or not. It's a social cue most people pick up on, you don't call yourself a genius even if you are one.

2) Then the autism is confirmed when he goes onto talk about his inability to NOT be a genius when talking to/interacting with his teammates.

It's not an ad hominem attack because I'm not even arguing with him. A guy can't laugh at some autism once in a while? Ya'll sure laugh at NarutoLuva a ton.
