What does solar atomic mean when it comes to watches? And is that better than a chronograph watch? I'm getting a watch for someone for their birthday and I dunno which is better.

It's simply a watch that's kept in sync with the US atomic clock in Boulder. The precision is based on the oscillation frequency between a Cs133 nucleus and its electrons. That's the main difference between it and your standard fare wall clock really. There's no more accuracy to be had than with an atomic clock.

The solar variety is just powered by sunlight.

And before anyone asks, no, it's not radioactive (133 is a stable isotope of Cesium). Oscillatory motion and nuclear decay are entirely separate phenomena. As a matter of fact, radioactive decay would gradually increase the error over time, depending on the mechanism.

Hope that helps.

?? thanks lmao.

Uh, so which is better?

Well.....the atomic one. It's a watch after all.

Solar is the way watch is powered and atomic is the way it keeps time. Like a Casio G-Shock gets a radio signal once a day from that atomic clock in Fort Collins Colorado, and if left in direct sunlight for 6 hours can be stored in a drawer for like 4-6 months and it will still run (used to sell watches and jewelry)

I don't understand why people even wear watches anymore when their cell phone always has the accurate time.

I play with radioactive stuff.

I kinda figured. Your takes on the subject suggest you were in the field.

R&D or Applied?

Both actually. Right now a little more R&D and translation to the clinical setting.

Ive never worn a watch on the daily, never will. Fuckers always catch on my arm hairs and pull them out one by one. Annoying just to have time on my wrist when its already my pocket.

But then again, Im not the vain type that derives pride from wearing frivolous clothing or jewelry. Beyond my wedding ring, I dont wear jewelry at all.

I wear a watch because it's a lot easier than digging my cellphone out of my pocket.

What else do you have in that pocket that would require "digging"?

Moreover, what sort of urgency requires that you know the time now whereby the time difference between looking at your wrist and looking at your phone becomes detrimental?

I dont think Cinderella requires that sort of time management. Pray tell.

Yes, but not pertaining to the subject at hand. I hold a Masters in Molecular Physiology. I hold a doctorate in Nuclear/Particle Physics.

Fuck...

How big are those student loans? lol

Pretty badass man. I am not one who usually will envy someone for their education because most of the time their education is stupid, uninteresting shit like accounting, finance or liberal arts.

But Particle Physics! Badass. Remind me to never engage you on the subject.

No urgency. I said it's "easier". If I'm sitting down, it's a lot easier to look at my watch instead of pulling out my cellphone. Especially if I'm in jeans. Or if I'm coaching my daughter's soccer team, I don't ususally even have my cellphone. There's more situations where a watch is just more convenient.
Does that make sense?

BTW, to classify most people's college education as "stupid" shows how ignorant you really are.

Not all that bad actually. I'm lucky to be in this branch of applied physics now. Salaries are on par with specialist physicians (Rad oncs, Heme oncs, etc.) so the costs of school are largely worth it for newer graduates.

As for engaging me, I encourage it. Nobody knows everything. The day you believe that is the day you start risking peoples lives.

Because they always have their phones stuck to their faces and cannot see it.
