An instance where a team or player achieves a fairy tale ending while suffering through many heartbreak losses in their career. Obviously the Mavs one is the freshest one to date. Any more you can think of?
1. Red Sox definitely on the top of that list. :D
2. Goran Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon after many years of falling short
3. Agassi finally winning the French Open after looking like his career was about over. Of course he won many other tournaments before and after that but only won the French Open once
4. Novotna winning Wimbledon after being remembered as being a choker in years past there.

Liverpool started the CL that year not in the group stage, but in the Qualifying rounds, so their odds of winning the tournament weren't good. They miraculously beat Olimpiacos at Anfield to get through to the knockout rounds, somehow beat Mourinho's Chelsea, then at the final came back from 3-0 to a great Milan team led by Sheva, Kaka, and Maldini.

I don't think they had any business winning the CL that year

Actually, I'd put Ray Bourque finally winning the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche, after 20+ years of playing at an elite level.

The Patriots winning in 2001 on the back of Tom Brady, after 9/11, for their first championship, beating the Greatest Show on Turf, was a fairy tale ending too.
