Given that your country doesn't consider 6+ million person genocides out of control, a drug war seems pretty harmless tbh.

Oh and I'm not even making this up my grandma randomly calls me from fuckin Tijuana today telling me my aunt is getting surgery there (wouldn't tell me why even tho I know it's because she's a cheap Jewish woman who'd give up an organ or three to save a few hundred dollars), asking me if I wanna visit them this weekend (since it's an hour drive for me).

I've seen my family members do some outrageously stupid things because they're overtly cheap, but this takes the cake by far.

Where did this alleged 6 million person genocide happen? I hope you're not referring to the greatly exaggerated numbers from the holocaust...

TJ isn't so bad. My grandma goes once a month to shop and visit family.

You're grandma isn't a white. Also, I misspoke, not sure if she's getting surgery in TJ or somewhere else. If the cheapest surgery available is in Juarez, she'll make the trip to Juarez or die trying. She's the most Jewish Jew you'll ever meet.

Troof. Legalize drugs (or as I call it, let people have power over what they put into their body), these cartels are powerless, and now the government has something it can tax the shit out of to help the economy.

A friend of mine who has family that lives in Mexico told me today that one of the cartels stopped a bus full of people in a rural area (family witnessed the cartel pulling the bus over right in front of their neighborhood). The cartel lit the children and women on fire, forced the bus driver to run over the weak looking men, and made the strong looking men fight to death in order to recruit a strong man into the cartel.

Some really fucked up shit going on over there.

I read this originally on the borderland beat and they were VERY clear that this story was totally unsubstantiated. Now that the "mainstream" media is picking the story up they are just reporting it as fact. The cartels do some grisly stuff but I seriously doubt this happened.

My coworker just went to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City and she managed to come back...don't know if they strapped a kilo of yayo to her, but since she's still working here, I imagine not.

Oh, Gee!!

I'd defer to anyone here with more specific knowledge but the conventional wisdom is (and they touch on this a little in the article from the OP) is that the government knows how much they rely on the tourist $$$ and tries to keep those spots safe, plus most of the cartels view killing Americans as bad for business because it brings a lot of heat. In the case of my brother and his wife (who really did go to Playa del Carmen back in 2001) they got a little safety speech from the resort staff about the dangers of leaving the resort but that was more a matter of just local thugs and pick pockets than any organized gangs.

In the past few years I've had student workers from my office take trips down to places like Cabo, etc. for spring break or in the summer and they've all come back with no horror stories to tell.

I still visit the border towns (Las Flores, for example), and while there's a strong military presence there (tanks and soldiers behind sandbags carrying automatic weapons), I'm still able to buy my taquitos in relative peace, w/ the exception of a few barefoot child chicle vendors every now and then.

If you FLY to one of the big tourist destinations and stay on the beaten path, do the hotel pool, carlos and charlies, senor frogs, etc. you are probably as safe as you would be in SA.

On the other hand, crossing the Texas/Mexico border and driving anywhere is terminally stupid. You just never know whats going on with the Zetas and the CDG and where the next shit storm is gonna go down.

DPG21920
06-15-2011, 10:45 PM
I asked people and they said flying into Cancun and making the drive to Carmen (there are numerous means of transportation) is not bad. I wouldn't be driving from the US all the way. It's a 45 minute car ride max.

I don't think it's asking/expecting that much to be able to sit down with my smoothie, click on the "new posts" icon (which, incidentally, I tend to do without even looking at the title of the thread I'm reading), and not be confronted with a GIANT picture of a very dead corpse done up like a pincushion for machetes.
