I think several calculations estimate marijuana IS the biggest cash crop in USA.
As soon as the corps and their FDA enablers/enforcers are ready to take over the mj market, the corps will tell the legislators to decriminalize it.
The Illegal Drugs Industrial Complex vs legalize-it corps will be extremely interesting and expensive.

I don't expect legalizing it would solve our revenue problems, but it sure would help if we legally taxed it.
You cannot legally tax an illegal sale (you are aware of this already)
Making things legal for taxation purposes doesn't solve revenue issues. People would just not buy other things they normally would have bought.
Revenue problems have to be solved at the demand side first.

you do know the IRS will chase them crims down for tax payable on proceeds of crime...
once the govt becomes the main grower and supplier aka herb phamarcys...then what are the crims going to do when there source of income/trade is depleted, get onto harder drugs or cheaper drugs to mass produce like ecstasy, but then again the govt can undercut the other players cause they have mass land and resources to fuck around with

This is some really poor thinking. They are ALREADY buying pot. If you don't think decriminalization and subsequent taxation wouldn't increase revenue then I don't know what to tell you.
