View Full Version : What would Bruce Bowen do against Michael Jordan?
That'd be one hell of a match up.

He would get owned. Team defense is your only hope.

Bruce has covered Jordan. I realize that for many people that they didn't start watching Basketball until perhaps the 03 Championship season, but before Bruce got to San Antonio after his first placement on the ALL-NBA D Team with Miami in 1999-2000 season, Bruce skipped around and played for the likes of Boston and Philly. He did get to cover Jordan and in those early years of Bruce's career, Jordan did him like he did everyone else, he got what he wanted. It would have been interesting to see what 03-07 Bruce would have done to Jordan 96-98, that would've been awesome to see. I'd liken the closest thing to Bruce in that era would be Eddie Jones.

Not sure if Bowen was really matched up against Jordan, but the numbers seem to show that the Celtics actually did a reasonable job on Jordan.

I can tell you this; Jordan wouldn't let Bowen outscore him in a playoff game, like some other SGs we know.

all this is irrelevant because Bowen was no defender back in those days.
I'd be interesting to see how he'd do after his reinvention. I'm guessing better than 99% of the other defenders. Especially 2003-2006 Bowen

Bruce would let MJ take all the long contsted two's he wants. The problem is Jordan would still probably hit more than half.
You can't stop Jordan; you can only hope to contain him!

You can't even hope to do that. Jordan decides on his performance. Not your defense.

Pretty much.. There were rare occasions where Jordan would be played well and struggle a little. John Starks was a very good defender and i recall in the 93 conference finals Knicks got up 2-0 and Jordan was struggling by his standards. But when it got back to Chicago for game 3 Jordan had like 55 pts and dominated the hell outta the rest of the series. Bulls won 4 straight to take it in 6..
How well did Bowen do against Kobe? Let's start there..

He'd probably play him as well as Joe Dumars did, who MJ said was the best defender he ever played against.

Here are a few clips of a young Bowen guarding MJ in a charity game.

as mentioned, Bowen did guard Jordan a few times in his career. that second pic I think I actually found on this board some time ago. I think a prime Bowen could "hang with him", but I have MJ as the greatest of all time. dude averaged 37 ppg just his third season in the league. beast.

The only perimeter defender that probably could have "handled" Jordan happened to be Jordan's running buddy with the Bulls.
Seeing a Pippen/Jordan matchup would have been a dream for basketball fans. I wouldn't doubt that Phil put them on opposite teams in practice at let them go at it.

Jordan would still get his numbers. I don't know how efficient he'd be though.
