Spurs just got a top 10 talent for George Hill. Hopefully there is more to this than just a Hill for Kawhi swap.
And RJ becomes the most overpaid bench player in Texas...

Sucks to see George go.. he has come along way since the Spurs drafted him as an unknown in 2008.. But its a good move with all the backcourt guys the Spurs have.
Hopefully Kawhi is the long defensive 3 the Spurs have missed since Bruce left.

So your telling me that Leonard shouldn't have been in the lottery, yet in many other drafts in past years, he still would of been a lottery talent. Yet you let a player go ,who is going to demand about at least $3 million more a year, then Leonard, when Hill becomes a free agent. I don't know I always thought it was never a bad thing when one of the oldest teams in the league got younger. Sounds like a "Hill is a great point guard" homer.

Good trade for the Spurs. Hill had plateaued and wasn't gonna make any more progression. The 2010 Dallas series completely got to his head and made it so he was no longer a defense-first type guy who always hustled. Classic example of a guy who develops a jumper and then gets lazy at everything else.

Well I don't like it. Hill was improving every year. Although he did plateau last year and he did some stupid mistakes in the playoff series. Still he was our best young guy, nobody can deny that. I would have traded him for a real NBA player and not an unknown that we have to start from ZERO again. what a waste.

So why be butthurt about it? I like Hill, hes a solid player, but once he proved he couldn't handle the pg duties, he became a jag.
Any time you can trade a legit starter level talent in this league for a mid first round pick in the shittiest draft of all time you gotta do it.
Things we know:
-Hill was too good to be a back up PG.
-Hill is not better than Tony Parker
-The Spurs defense was porous
-Hill was not a great defender against small guards
-Hill is a good 1v1 defender but will always be fighting an uphill battle defending players 4 to 7 inches taller than him at the SG and SF spot.
-The Spurs were best when Parker, Manu and Hill were on the floor together. But this led to defensive issues.
-Hill was too good to sit the bench. But not better than Tony or Manu. He was being wasted. The Spurs needed to get better defensively, especially in the top 3 positions, SF, PF and C.
-The Spurs just got better defensively at SF.
Things we probably know:
-Even with all of Hill's upside, Gary Neal can still contribute similar offensive numbers in the role Hill previously had.
-The Spurs didn't see an available big man in the draft that was better than Ryan Richards. I hope that's a good thing.
-Regardless of the supporting cast, the Spurs wont win anything unless Duncan is capable of putting up 15-20ppg and 10rpg in the postseason.

This was a great trade, Leonard is going to be a pretty darn good player, imo he's another Gerald Wallace.
Losing Hill you get:
-More Minutes for Anderson/Neal. Anderson has a pretty high ceiling, better size, skill set, potential etc. while Neal is going to be a 16-18 PPG guy next year.
-A bunch of young players with a lot of potential in the draft
-Better on defense, if you watched the Spurs this year you'd know that Hill really fell off, his defense was getting really sloppy, TONS of late rotations as well as being unable to get past a damn screen.
-The Spurs got BIGGER. Leonard is a really long SF, he can play defense especially in the passing lanes, rebound like a beast, he's got a really high motor, he's a gym rat (always working to get better), he changed his shot mechanics, he can score in the paint, he was projected by many mock drafts to go in the top 10 (7-10). As I said before they opened up playing time for Anderson at SG, which means the Spurs got bigger. No more teams posting up our Guards/Forwards or rebounding on them at will like Memphis did last year. Leonard has an 8'10 standing reach and a 7'3 wingspan, he's got the potential to turn into a lock down NBA defender.

Gary Neal can occasionally go off for 20 points but if he becomes a 16-18 ppg guy this season then he's probably doing it because Parker and/or Manu are injured. Anderson hasn't looked all that great since his injury. Hopefully he gets back to where he was pre-injury.
This is one of the weakest drafts in the past 10 years.
The Spurs got bigger and got better on defense, which is what they needed.

Yeah, one of the best shooters in the NBA that scored 10 PPG in his rookie season in 21 MPG doesn't have a chance to put up those numbers :lmao. Especially with Hill leaving, he'll be getting a lot more touches, but of course he won't be able to score 6 more points in 10 minutes, great logic there.
I'm fine with it. Hill had his moments (okay, he had a good series against Dallas), but as a marginally good player, he is far from irreplaceable. You can't just grapple onto every decent player that puts on a uniform. Besides, this was the last year of his rookie contract and the Spurs weren't going to be able to pay him going forward anyways, so at least they got some return value out of him this way.
Clears up the log-jam at SG, gets more minutes for Neal and Anderson. Adds a defensive forward and a couple other prospects down the line. Shows some sort of willingness by the front office to shake things up for a change.
And Spurs, classy as always, sending Hill back to his hometown. :cry

He's pretty much guaranteed to get more minutes, more plays will be ran for him and he'll get a lot more touches. He scored 10 PPG last year averaging just 21 MPG in his rookie season, this year he's coming back more experienced and much more comfortable. We saw his ability to drive it and shoot those crazy floaters, his great shooting from all over the court etc.
Leonard isn't a scoring machine either, again leading to more touches for Neal.

I don't see why not, he was scoring 10 PPG in 21 MPG in his rookie season, and that was without any set plays, nearly everything was just catch and shoot. The Spurs will surely create a lot of plays for him, he'll be getting around 10 more minutes a game, you've seen his offensive arsenal which is pretty impressive, not only is he one of the best shooters in the NBA but he can drive as well that floater is deadly. The absence of Hill and addition of Leonard will make him the primary ball handler off the bench.
You act as if Neal is some sort of scrub lmao.

That's why I said 16-18 ppg, 18 being his ceiling while 16 being more realistic.
I know he's not a true rookie, it's just that his comfort level playing with other guys in the 2nd year the Spurs using him a lot more will lead to him scoring around 16PPG, especially with him handling the ball a lot more.

I think he might play some PG, we saw Pop move RMJ to PG and I think he'll do the same with Neal a bit especially with Joseph as the only backup PG. I'm pretty sure the Spurs will have to play him 10 more mpg.
When you have a bench that consists of:
-Splitter/Bonner/Blair (Splitter might be starting if Dice leaves)
-Leonard (IMO he's the #1 SF off the bench)
-Anderson
-Neal
-Joseph/???
Nearly all of the scoring will be coming from Anderson/Neal, the other guys aren't really scorers.

This trade while not horrible certainly isn't going to have any short term pay out either so I'm kind of indifferent to it now.
They got a bunch of prospects who aren't going to contribute any time soon, for a player who was good but far from being a difference maker.
Basically the Spurs remain in the limbo, they don't blow up their core to start rebuilding but also don't improve for the next season.
Pretty much what Parker said on his interview. Still a good team, no longer a contender.

With a 29 pick is hard to improve the team for the short term ofc, although the Mavs manage to do it with a 26, but that's not the point.
By trading a vital part of the rotation it's arguable that the Spurs actually got worse for the next season.
As I said maybe not significantly worse, but forgive me if I'm not convinced that this rookie is the second coming of Bruce Bowen or that he is even going to play significant minutes in his first year like most Spurs fans.
