I lived in Riga, Latvia for a year and half and still have Latvian friends, a few of whom are basketball junkies. I was emailing them about Bertans. One didn’t know much about him (Bertans plays in Slovenia) but the other did. He said he read a couple of pre-draft reports on Bertans that, at 18, Davis is still growing and could surpass his present 6’10”. Would love to have a 6’11” or 7 foot sharpshooter on the Spurs in a few years.

I am going to Riga next week from June 30th to July 4th. I’ll see if I can get any more info on Bertans. I think there are a few Spurs fans in Slovenia on this board, maybe they can help too if they have any information from the Slovenian team.

Best, Bill

Bertans is a pretty good player. He is very athletic. I think he still needs some time with his sgooting, buut the problem is that Olimpija coach didn't play him that much. Fuck those 8 minutes per game. Next season he should be playing a lot more, at least thats what they said in Olimpija cause they think he can be a star on that team.

what we dont need him signin a long term contract with a stupid buyout clause, spurs should be managing or have a say in his contract negotiations

When i saw this thread i had no idea he was traded to us. He is one of the guys i had on my wish list for 29th pick......hell yeah, Spurs had a good draft. I wonder what happens to butler and if richards will be coming over.

He already signed for 4 years with our team (Olimpija Ljubljana, Slo). Has 3y remaining. He is skinny at the moment but he is very young and still growing. in a couple of years he can be a very good player (SF!!!).

EDIT: and why should Spurs had any say about his current contracts? How much Spurs invested in his development?

He's grown something like seven inches in the last two years.

I wanted him at 29 as well... Butler is unproven and Richards will be a mobile PF.

RJ will be gone so I imagine he'll come over then a share the SF spot with Leonard

I would prefer if he came over NOW. Dirk wasn't drafted and stashed in Euro for a few years. I feel this guy has more to benefit and learn by coming over now then on some mediocre Euro team. Stick him on the Toros.

He'd benefit a lot more from the game time he'd get overseas. Brining him over now really wouldn't be good for him.

Dirk was also two years older than Davis Bertans when he was drafted and was a much more polished prospect. Bertans is very raw and very young. He needs time to fill out his frame and develop before being thrust into the NBA.

People need to realize Bertans is only 18 years old.

How much playing time is he getting? How competitive is the league he's in? If he's not getting much playing time in a piss poor league I feel its more beneficial for him to cover over and learn/condition from Spurs coaching staff.

He will play 20min in Euroleague next season.

How competitive is the league he's in?

He plays in three leagues. One is Euroleague, the highest level of competition in Europe, second is Adriatic league, third strongest league in Europe (Spanish FCB is 2nd) and he also plays in Slovenian league, which is not that strong, but has usually spectacular finals series.

Stick him on the Toros. He's in a much better situation in Europe. It wouldn't make any sense to have him and Richard on the roster.

I'm backtracking so I agree Europe is still a better fit for him for a couple of years. I was concerned with his playing time and level of competition.

As for RJ, I'm still banking on an amnesty clause in the new CBA. He's definitely gone if that happens.
