USC’s Marcus Simmons named Pac-10 DPOY
March 7th, 2011, 11:41 am · 3 Comments · posted by Michael Lev, staff writer

The Pac-10 recognized the top stopper on the conference’s best defensive team by naming USC’s Marcus Simmons its Defensive Player of the Year.
Simmons’ teammate, Nikola Vucevic, made first-team All-Pac-10.
Arizona’s Derrick Williams beat out Vucevic for Pac-10 Player of the Year. Sean Miller of the first-place Wildcats was named Coach of the Year.
Washington’s Matthew Bryan-Amaning was named Most Improved Player. Cal’s Allen Crabbe was named Freshman of the Year.
Crabbe will get a heavy dose of Simmons on Thursday when the Trojans and Golden Bears meet in the Pac-10 Tournament quarterfinals.
Simmons, a 6-6 senior guard, helped the Trojans allow a league-low 62.9 points per game. He held several All-Pac-10 performers below their shooting averages, including Washington State’s Klay Thompson (12 of 35, .343), Stanford’s Jeremy Green (5 of 22, .228), UCLA’s Tyler Honeycutt (6 of 16, .375) and Washington’s Isaiah Thomas (8 of 20, .400).

Syracuse's Rick Jackson says 'no' to Spurs

After not getting drafted in the 2011 NBA Draft, Syracuse's Rick Jackson was invited by the San Antonio Spurs to attend their upcoming mini-camp.

However, according to his father, Jackson said no to the Spurs' invite and further said San Antonio should have drafted him:

But Jackson will turn that offer down, his father, Rick Jackson Sr., said in a phone interview Friday.

"(Rick) said the Spurs had the 59th pick," Jackson Sr. said. "They should have picked him then."

Jackson was quite vocal on Twitter about not getting selected in the draft. He ranted throughout the draft and when it was apparent he was not going to hear his name called, he said he will make every team who passed on him pay.

all 30 teams passed on him...so is he going to make them all pay by not playing for them....wow that will show them Ricky...

what a fool he and his father have shown to be. The Spurs are one of the two best franchises over the last decade plus. He could have played for a HOF coach, with a HOF PF, a HOF SG, and a future HOF PG. Yet he lets his ego get in the way......well his father's ego gets in the way. As Mr. T used to say.....I pity the fool.

BTW, I dont want Jackson anyway. I like the Cuse, but Jax is undersized. IMO, he should go to the Knicks. They can definitely use his rebounding and defense.

Spurs scouts to look at Simmons, Smith

http://www.projectspurs.com/2011-articles/june/spurs-scouts-to-look-at-simmons-smith.html

A pair of undrafted players will be working out for the San Antonio Spurs soon.

USC's Marcus Simmons will be in San Antonio for a mini-camp and Fresno State's Greg Smith is in Miami today for the start of a four-day mini-camp, which a Spurs representative will be attending.

Simmons is a 6-6 guard known primarily for his defense. He averaged 5.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in his senior season with the Trojans. He was also named Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, beating out UCLA's Malcolm Lee and Washington's Justin Holiday. Being the defensive standout on one of the best defensive teams in the country, that included recently-drafted 76ers center Nikola Vucevic, is saying something.

Smith is a 6-9 center, and a name many expected would be called on draft night. While he is undersized among most centers, his 7-2 wingspan allows him to play against taller centers and forwards.

Smith averaged 11.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game last season. Aside from his wingspan, Smith is very athletic and mobile for a center. He has big hands, measuring one foot wide that allow him to snatch entry passes with ease. He is still very raw, but taking a chance on him and spending some time developing his post game could benefit a team.

Simmons and Smith are just a few of the many players that the Spurs will be taking a good look at. After finding a gem in Gary Neal, I doubt the Spurs will leave any stone unturned.

A camp involves scrimmages, which means organizations have to invite enough players to play all positions even if they only have need at one position. Additionally, because there are thousands of good basketball players that can't all be adequately scouted prior to the draft and finding a player that suits a team's needs gives that team more options for building their roster and saving money, it doesn't hurt to sift through the left-overs for a potential miracle.

We made a note in our recent west coast workout report about just how big Greg Smith (http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Greg-Smith-5817/)'s hands are. Upon further review at the combine, his hands are one-foot wide, easily the top mark we've seen since the combine began measuring hands. This quantifies the way Smith (6-8 without shoes, 7-2 ½ wingspan, 252 pounds) can routinely snatch the ball out of mid-air and palm it away from his body.

We pick up a young PF who has alot of potential and so that gives us three to four guys to develop in D league.

1. Ryan Richards
2. Da'Sean Butler (http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/dasean_butler/index.html?nav=page)
3. Cory Joseph
4. Greg Smith

Yes I see Green over Butler this year.

^^ in order to have all 4 in d-league and still retain control of them, we'd have to have Butler and Smith on the Spurs roster to send them down (getting paid at least NBA minimum).... while our draft picks of Richards and Joseph would have to remain off our roster and get paid roughly 30-40K to play in the d-league (since we can only send 2 players off our roster)

You can only send three players down to the D-League at any given time. Additionally, only 1st and 2nd year players can go to the D-League. Danny Green and Da'Sean Butler are considered 2nd year players now, so this is it for them.

I'm beginning to think that RC has a hand fetish. Out of curiosity how long have they been measuring hands at the combine?

I liked Smith's interview, maybe he can contribute a couple of years down the road but he'll really need to hit that KT jumper in his sleep if he wants to stick on this team. In fact, if he learns to do those little things like back-breaking picks and crazy eyes he could be a nice player.

One thing's for sure Spurs are looking for a 4/5 and will add one by hook or by crook.

There is a difference between beeing sent down with an NBA-contract (Green) and just playing because nobody in the real league wants you anymore (Walker)...

Not every team. Dallas didnt. Thet had their picks traded, so were Pacers, Hornets. Some teams had too high picks for him, like Heat, Bulls, Bobcats.

Dallas drafted Jordan Hamilton and then traded his rights...so yes, they did pass on Jackson. The Pacers drafted two players and then traded them away, passing on Jackson.

If I am not mistaken, every single team drafted this season. So everyone had the opportunity to draft Jackson. They drafted for themselves or sold the rights to other teams in both rounds, all the while Jackson remained on the board.

So yes, all 30 teams passed on him. Hell, the Lakers passed on him 4 times in the 2nd round alone. They drafted 2-3 absolute nobodies and never heard ofs instead of Jackson.

So let him bitch and moan. Nobody wanted him. He can go to the DLeague or Europe for all the NBA seems to care.
