I just started playing Black Ops for the first time, steadily getting my ass handed to me in the process.

You play MW2 for a while and Black Ops becomes easy as shit. The game play is so much slower and you're not dodging as many noob tubers. I'm not the best player in the world, but I almost always end up in the double digits these days.

Other than that, there's not really a science to getting good (other than camping like crazy) other than just keep playing and getting in practice.

The Famas has been weakened with a new update. The AUG is the new Famas. The G11 is slower, but great for bigger maps. Use the iron sights and you can kick some ass. For smaller maps, just run around with the Spas like so many others do.

I have my best KD with the ak 47. It usually lets me drop somebody fairly quickly. I don't play all that much anymore, but I ran with ak47 +rds/ExMag, Makarov +ExMag, Flash, Clay, Nade.

Just don't snipe, this game is horrible for sniping

they buffed snipers somewhat recently as well, all (except maybe the first one) are one hit kills if you hit the chest and up

sniping on a console requires a lot of good instincts because it's hard to quickscope, which is why most people don't snipe, but I do well with them, at least 1/1, some of my biggest games have been sniping

also the new maps have made sniping a lot easier, like Zoo for example

The AK 47 is my fav gun. I usually run silencer on it

This is the only reason why I buy map packs... Zombies are awesome. If you are interested in the back story to it, google CODZ.

The new zombie map is actually pretty damn fun. Although, imo, Ascension is still the hardest map. Call of the Dead was good, but too big to work effectively. Shangri La is hectic, but easy to get around. It's probably my favorite map of them all.

The newest maps are actually worth a damn for once. I like them all actually.

Well I'm getting better. Still nothing special but... I stick to hardcore matches, then switch to regular deathmatch and my aim improves as well as other things. I think it's because in hardcore you go without a HUD and crosshairs for hip fire, then goto the regular matches getting them back and it's easier for me. I'm flirting with 1-1 ratio's now at least.
