Yao will make it to the HOF, you simply can't ignore what he accomplished for the game. Anyone who disagrees is an idiot.

HOF worthy? (because of all the seasons he missed)

But the politically correct people in charge of the HOF will probably induct him in the international NBA players category anyway

Kai

Like I said, he will be inducted for what he did for the game off the court. He bridged a huge opportunity for the NBA globally.

Pff, then David Stern should get in too. He did way more than Yam Ming on that regard.

So.. DAVID STERN FOR HOF! I call it now!

I don't believe there is a separate players category for international players.

There is a separate category for "contributors" which could be used for Yao as being one of the pioneer ambassador players from Asia.

I think his player resume is actually good enough to be HOF worthy. It might be borderline but still looks strong enough. 19/9 career numbers. 8 all star selections, 5 all NBA selections.

Well i think he will get in for the reasons you said and I really dont have a problem with that "case" ...

but if we JUST look at NBA and Olympics/World championships (since he played no college ball) I would say no he just misses the cut.

But the NBA and it's stars (especially Lebron and Kobe) owe Yao for opening up the world's largest market ...

Yao is a "brainer" ...

Wasn't comparing their accomplishments. I was comparing how they both had injury riddled, shortened careers. I was guessing that "lemon" referred to that, his inability to stay healthy. But if that's not what he meant, that's my bad.

You missed the entire point, as did most of the people in this thread. The argument is whether Yao deserves to be in the HOF for his impact on the NBA globally. He put the NBA on televisions that wouldn't have given a shit otherwise. He did more to the brand than just about anyone in the NBA today. Yes, Yao had a forgettable on-court career, but that's not what anyone is arguing. You people really can't really be this dense.

And for the record, I've wanted Yao off of the roster the past 3+ seasons.

Yao will get in. People seem to forget the Basketball Hall of Fame isn't the NBA Hall of Fame but encompasses all of basketball. If you look at what he did for the game, the numbers he produced healthy, and the numbers he put up in international basketball it's pretty conclusive that he will get in.

He'll get in because he was an impact NBA All-Star player and for what he did internationally for the game. He'll also get in because he was the first Asian NBA superstar. Just like Jackie Robinson got in the MLB Hall of Fame as the first black baseball player, Yao will get in for this reason if nothing else.

I would choose Dirk 70+ games then Yao's 50 or less games anyday of the season, not even considering the fact that Dirk is a 7 foot shooting beast. Yao wa very dominant when he was healthy but thats only half the ball game, the other is staying healthy to be able to use your talents.

What a stupid argument. Dirk is an automatic in. Yao is going to be in for transcending basketball and bringing China it's basketball to America and for bringing the NBA to China. People forget that this isn't just about scoring points and rebounds although he did very well in that regard too. Shame his career was cut short. Rik Smits battled foot problems in his career from 1996 to 2000. At least he battled his feet to a tie. Too bad Yao was not able to battle on as Rik Smits did.
