There is a separate category for "contributors" which could be used for Yao as being one of the pioneer ambassador players from Asia.

I think his player resume is actually good enough to be HOF worthy. It might be borderline but still looks strong enough. 19/9 career numbers. 8 all star selections, 5 all NBA selections.

He put the NBA on televisions that wouldn't have given a shit otherwise. He did more to the brand than just about anyone in the NBA today. Just like Jackie Robinson got in the MLB Hall of Fame as the first black baseball player, Yao will get in for this reason if nothing else.

What a stupid argument. Dirk is an automatic in. Yao is going to be in for transcending basketball and bringing China it's basketball to America and for bringing the NBA to China. People forget that this isn't just about scoring points and rebounds although he did very well in that regard too. Shame his career was cut short. Rik Smits battled foot problems in his career from 1996 to 2000. At least he battled his feet to a tie. Too bad Yao was not able to battle on as Rik Smits did.
