Anyone tried it yet? It looks awesome enough to actually pay for so I'm thinking about it but I'd like to try it first.

Actually it's quite good, even more.
It's been here since 2008, and it working quite well, either on PCs or phones...
Moreover the desktop client is light and fast, nicely done.
But to use it you really need to pay, unless you LOVE annoying audio ads between tunes, and the per tune max limit.....

Yeah - I don't mind paying for it but I want to try it first. I've heard its good for singles but not so much if you actually want to listen to entire albums.

Well there is no Gapless (as for any streaming product), but listening to albums is not a problem (well, my experience with spodify dates back to 2009, so haven't tried since then, there are way too many unlisted tracks on my hard drive for the moment)..

I like that you can access a lot of albums almost instantly...
What's the catch anyway? That we don't actually own the music?
MannyIsGod
07-15-2011, 08:56 PM
Yeah - you only have access to it as long as you pay Spotify. Thats for the offline stuff, I mean. Otherwise the streaming is free with ads and honestly the ads haven't been half bad.
Lee, I'm surprised that you've encountered stuff they don't have. I've yet to find a single song (except for Beatles songs due to iTunes exclusive) missing from what I've searched for but I don't have rare music I'm looking for. I'd imagine a lot of local and small stuff is probably not on there.
How is it any different/better than grooveshark?

tbh, I have spent the last 14 years of my life digging through Bill Laswell's catalogue and artists closely associated with him. I didn't expect to find a lot of it, and didn't but was pleased with what I did find. I just have almost all of it already.

$9.99 for Spotify Premium and $9 for Grooveshark Anywhere. The difference is minimal as far as pricing goes. If you have an Iphone though, you need to have a jailbroken IPhone to run Grooveshark which is kind of shady.
You'll know that Spotify will be here tomorrow but as far as Grooveshark is concerned, I've wondered how they've lasted so long ttytt.

I'm digging spotify a lot. This is the easiest and quickest way to listen to music period. When downloading music, you have to normally retag the files and then move the folder to your music folder. I've downloaded my fair share of music, and with spotify its seems to eliminate the need to ever have to download something again granted that you buy the premium account. Which i think is worth it. So far I've listened to about 10 songs that I normally wouldn't listen to. This helps you discover new music even more. You no longer have to go download an artists album that you never heard of and then decide for your self if you like it or go to youtube and type in the song. Its all right here for you.
I like that you can listen to the music that you have on your computer also. If you get the premimum service it seems to eliminate the need for google music now. I just spent 2 whole weeks having my music upload to the "cloud." With spotify I wonder how their streaming works on your cell phone when you are playing songs on your computer.
So far I'm really impressed with this service. Also if you have last.fm there is a scrobbler option which is awesome.

Would be nice if it had some kind of native podcast support, but iTunes numbers on that are probably way too big for people to move to it. iTunes may have its issues but the ability to subscribe to podcasts and have them updated daily is awesome.

search, put on playlist, play. :tu
next is see if they have a good way to link similar music, suggestions/reviews, discover new music. Like Pandora/Netflix.

The free version still kicks ass, but I don't see how ppl can pay these bastards if you still don't own shit in the end.
But there is this thing called Despotify which might help you decrypt their format and save mp3 :D
oh well I dont' see how ppl say this is an Itunes replacement.

Although I do have a question..I can't get my playlist to play randomly. I have like 4/5 albums added to playlist (200ish songs) and I want it to shuffle instead of playlist all in order. I have the little shuffle highlighted and all but it still plays all the way through. What gives? Geeks?!

A lot of people don't like iTunes, but there's one thing that you can't knock it for, it's fucking easy as shit to use.
I heard of Spotify a long time ago but just never got around to trying it. I'm not big on having to pay for Premium services. I know why they're offered (the developers need money to improve plus I can't fault them for wanting to profit from their invention), but I have no interest in paying for a service. I'm a cheap bastard that way.
So, seeing as how I don't have time to sift through every post (pretty busy morning), what's the final verdict on whether it's worth a try or not?

Spotify has been around for a while but it wasn't available in the US until 4 weeks ago.
I've found everything I wanted on the service except for the bands who think they are above it and still have a lot of money (metallica, tool). It's a great tool to expand your playlist if you link facebook to it and see what your friends are listing, assuming they allow you to see that info.

Its been a few weeks now. How is everyone liking spotify? I'm still using it on a daily basis. I have the 9.99 premium account. I think this is a must if you want to listen to the music "everywhere" so you can stream on your phone. I've updated the playlist since I posted it. Up to 60+ songs. I love that the last.fm audioscrobbler is attached. I don't have really any complaints. Just maybe a play count column. But nothing serious. Still getting a good use out of it daily!
Here is a new playlist I've been working on. Its some texas country murder/story songs. They aren't all about murder, but mainly songs that you can easily picture happening in your head. I like them a lot. http://open.spotify.com/user/ccr_2108/playlist/4Nkf4W3QAnmc3ENjjT9bMX I have to wait a little while to add more songs because some of them aren't on spotify at all. I may throw down the $9.99 a month because I was finally able to find two CDs on Spotify that I couldn't find to download (they're on iTunes for $10 each I think so I'd save $10). However, that really depends on if I can find a lot of music to listen to that I can't download to begin with, which should be kind of hard to do.
