I heard some intresting analysis on these two recievers this morning on Mike and Mike. And the question was thrown out, "Who is the better of the two?"

You can vote on it however you want...you can vote for who you think was the better WR or you can vote which one you would rather have on your team. Pick which one you want...I just throw out the question,

Randy or T.O.???

tough one... but I would probably take Moss, because he is one of the deadliest scoring threats the NFL has ever seen, as he is just a TD waiting to happen.

But there are definitely some nice things TO brings to the table with his work ethic, and great all-around play. He is without a doubt, a more complete football player than Moss ever tried to be.

What's frustrating about this, is that this shouldn't even be much of a debate. If Moss had half the work ethic of TO or Jerry Rice, he would be without question, the best WR ever, and probably the most unstoppable individual football player the NFL has ever seen.

Moss and it's not even close for me. Moss spent a decade with opposing defenses shitting their pants every time he lined up. TO is a very, very nice receiver but he doesn't come close to having Moss' shit your pants intimidation. Defenses could gameplan TO, there was no gameplan for Randy Moss in his prime. Jerry Rice is the GOAT but as far as striking fear in the heart of the other defense, nobody has done that like Randy Moss.

As far as their substantial negatives they brought to the table, I'd still rather Moss. Moss quit on teams, TO destroyed them.

I don't know what you're talking about here. I really don't get where you or det other guy we know get off thinking Randy Moss has no work ethic. Randy Moss had a tremendous work ethic. He learned it from Cris Carter and there's no indication he ever stopped working. His offseason workout program was one that most other receivers in the NFL could never complete. He worked constantly, and he also put in the bookwork time too - he knew the playbooks inside and out (at least in New England he did).

I think you're mistaking work ethic with (1) having zero focus when it comes to team goals, and (2) a dislike for taking hits, which is why he'd insist on running go routes nonstop at times.

If Randy Moss could have ever been convinced to go over the middle more than a handful of times a game, he could have been the GOAT easily because nobody is stopping him from making those tough catches except himself. Although maybe the reason he stayed so healthy for so long in the league is because of his unwillingness to go over the middle.

What's also underrated is how intelligent Moss is. I was watching highlights of the 2007 season yesterday when his retirement was announced, and he had tons of deep catches where Tom Brady threw a terrible deep ball and Moss had to spot the ball and adjust his route so he can be in the right place, then make a circus catch over DBs who had time to catch up to an underthrown pass. Did Brady resurrect Moss? Yes to a certain extent, but it's not like Tom Brady has any history at all of succeeding with deep threat receivers.

tbh yeah look at most all of the big highlights from that year and it was usually Moss adjusting to an underthrown pass. LOL there's even one where Jabar Gaffney had to come to a stop to catch a deep ball it was so badly underthrown.

And tbh this was a pretty impossible pass, but again notice that Moss has to FUCKING SLOW DOWN and that causes the pass to get broken up. If Brady woulda been able to put anything more on it, :lol 19-0

Having a good work ethic and being a whiny quitter aren't mutually exclusive. Kobe Bryant has one of the most notorious game 7 quitting performances of all time under his belt, and I don't see anyone question the fact he busts his ass off the court.

Prime1
08-02-2011, 08:31 PM
If he dogs it on routes where he's not the primary option and plays at half speed a lot of the time then he has a poor work ethic to me. He also didn't just quit for a fourth quarter here or there he quit for entire seasons like with the Raiders. And quitting is one word being lazy and having poor work ethic is another. He had like maybe 3-4 seasons where he went all out for almost every play and he destroyed it in every one of those seasons. Reasonable to assume if he had always played hard he would have way better numbers.

DUNCANownsKOBE
08-02-2011, 08:45 PM
Since Kobe quit in the 2006 first round he has a bad work ethic?
Since Tim Duncan quit in the 2004 Olympics he has a bad work ethic?

Randy Moss, just like those two, has never quit out of laziness, he's quit because he wants to embarrass his teammates/coach/etc. Just like Kobe in 2006, he didn't quit because he's lazy, he quit because he's a narcissist who thinks quitting and showing his coaches/teammates up is the best way to help his team win. When Randy Moss was on winning teams, he didn't quit on routes or play half assed.

T.O. is the same way. He's quit on his teams and even caused them to implode, but look at the fuckin shape he and Moss are in at their age. Do you think someone with a "bad work ethic" comes into training camp every fuckin year in game-ready shape? A bad work ethic isn't the same thing as a bad attitude.

He gets a pass for that game since he was playing with a high ankle sprain and the o-line played like ass.

After that season, I honestly can say Brady has done nothing to prove he isn't anything more than a glorified Tony Romo.

You make it sound like he pulled an Albert Haynesworth quit job. It doesn't matter how naturally talented you are, you can't be a successful NFL player unless you work hard. Even if you admittedly quit on plays.

Seriously though, no one is saying he didn't put up all-time great numbers we're talking about how hard he played. He "played when he wanted to play". And according to Brady he didn't want to play hard last year, he didn't want to play hard for the raiders for two years, and he was known for slacking on plays with Minnesota. As freaky as his numbers are they could have been significantly better.

I'm not talking about his training regimen. There is no doubt that he trained his butt off, otherwise he wouldnt be out there running 4.2s and outjumping everyone in the NFL.

Work ethic is not just about that, but also about being diligent, reliable, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. His being a pussy about going over the middle is pretty damn pathetic, when guys half his size do it without fear (Wes Welker, Steve Smith, Hines Ward to name a few). Dude was also lazy as fuck at blocking, took plays off on a consistent basis, and would quit on his team when things went bad. Sounds like bad work ethic tbh.

Obviously his longevity didn't win him shit. Maybe if he had some balls to take some hits, took a few less plays off (nearly everyone in the league takes plays off from time to time, but not to the extent that Moss would), and was willing to do seemingly small yet extremely important things like blocking, the Vikings would have a ring or two. Or maybe the Patriots. Not saying its his fault that those teams didn't win a ring, but considering how close both teams were to winning championships with him, one cant help but wonder if he did those things, could they have made a difference?

fwiw, i think its still debatable that Moss can be considered the best wide receiver the game has ever seen. Rice may be the most accomplished, and has a greater place in history, but if I'm building a team of all-time players at their best, Moss is the first receiver I take, without question. Maybe even the first player, period. The only others I would consider is Peyton or Bo Jackson. There is no questioning the absolutely ridiculous threat of scoring that Moss brings.

No, but maybe being more willing to go over the middle would have made it a lot easier for the Patriots to put up points against a Giants secondary that was clearly playing all game for the deep pass (no one wants to hear the speculative story that the OC was the only reason they lost that superbowl, refused to allow anyone to go over the midde... told Brady and Moss to shut the fuck up :cry blah blah blah)

Or would have helped Minny avoided a complete meltdown against an infinitely inferior team in Atlanta, and get to a Superbowl. Or maybe have made the playoffs a couple more times during his tenure in Minny, period, considering several times they had very talented teams that underachieved massively.

I don't think any single of them to this day, or ever, would question his play on the field.
And I do.

Lets also not forget, if we're gonna call Moss a pussy for not going over the middle, sans one catch early on in his career, T.O. has been notorious for disappearing in the 4th quarter of big games, going over the middle less and less, and almost acting like he didn't want the ball.

:lol wut?

every receiver in the NFL is in freakishly great shape. TO was the strongest most physical receiver in the NFL in his prime. On top of that he was as fast and as quick as most of the receivers out there. That's what I mean when I say he had a lot of talent. Sure Moss was faster but he had nothing on TO's strength to get off jam coverage

im not disagreeing with any of this, but are you honestly saying TO had natural talent on par with Moss? come on now... very few, if ANY receivers have ever had anything close to the natural talent and gifts Moss had.

IDK whats funnier... DoK still trying to do his best mono impression, or saying that Moss working SOLELY on being able to run fast and nothing else because he didnt care to improve other aspects of his game means he had a great work ethic.
I'm not doing a mono impression, sorry you're brain is small and incapable of thinking on the level my brain or mono's brain thinks on.

He didn't have Moss's natural talent (neither did any other receiver), but he's easily one of the top 5 most talented receivers of all time. I can't think of a receiver not named Randy Moss more talented than T.O.

No but I'm saying he was still more talented than most receivers out there. No body in the NFL could match his strength and physicality at the position

There are drills you can do to improve your hand eye coordination and improve your catching ability.

If T.O. had what you define as a good work ethic, he woulda been busting his ass doing those drills for hours a day over the off season.

Thats concentration not work ethic. Besides TO might have done just that. You can practice something a million times and still be mediocre at it. There are tons of athletes that never got good at a certain skill/aspect no matter how hard they tried.

on the other hand, there was Moss, dropping a WIDE OPEN TD pass against the falcons in 98. of course, that had nothing to do with them losing a game where they had a 10 point lead in the 4th against a team that had no business beating them... exactly how many incredibly amazing late game heroics has Moss had in his career?

anyways, im tired of arguing this.

simply put, both are/were tremendous receivers. moss was more talented (but him not living up to the talent he had hurt his teams), TO was more complete (but his inability to shut the fuck up hurt his teams). end of story.

Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the best wide receiver ever to play the game, but he says he wasn’t the most talented. Randy Moss, Rice says, was more talented.

And Rice doesn’t mean that as a compliment.

On ESPN Radio this morning, Rice said he always had a hard time watching Moss because Rice hated to see a player so naturally gifted not making the most of those gifts.

“It was hard for me to swallow because I was not as talented and I had to work harder,” Rice said. “To see a guy with that much talent not give it 100 percent, it was almost like a little slap in the face. But Randy was Randy.”

Rice said he wonders what kind of player Moss would have been with a better work ethic.

“He could have been one of the greatest if he had worked just a little bit harder,” Rice said. “I don’t think he wanted to give it 100 percent. You never knew what you were going to get with Randy. Sometimes you’d get the unbelievable guy, the amazing guy. Other times you’d get the guy that took a couple plays off.”

In Rice’s view, the unbelievable, amazing guy didn’t show up to work often enough.

It saddens me that we didn't get Moss a ring in 07.

That said, Moss by a large margin.

tbh yeah look at most all of the big highlights from that year and it was usually Moss adjusting to an underthrown pass.

This post makes me sad. If that pass is completed, is there any doubt it's the best pass ever made in the history of the NFL?
