So I joined an LARP group here in SA. The group is modeled after the game Fable. Here is the problem I am having, I have all the characteristics and weapons down that I want for my character but I am having a hard time coming up with a name.
Here is the breakdown of my character. I am a nomadic Knight that just happens into Albion. I wear dark clothing and but my allegiance can be bought for good or evil. I drink a little too heavily sometimes and have a tattoo on my face that was placed there by a wizard. I do not yet know the purpose of the tattoo which is why I have not sworn allegiance to anyone. I carry three things with me at all times, which are a mace, a sword and my shield. I also fight in the arena and place wagers on myself to make extra cash.
So the problem I am having is coming up with a good name. With the information provided can anyone help me out? No fart jokes please.

So this is my question to you guys, is anyone interested in being part of my group? I know it's very short notice but I would really appreciate it. We would also need to come up with a name for our group which I was totally unprepared for.

I know how to sew so I can make a couple of makeshift outfits on the fly that will do for at least this Saturday. I can also spare one of my weapons but will need the other two. For now you can probably just get a couple of nerf swords from target and cover them with duct tape until you decide on what you want.

I left my number on the first page and you can always PM me if you don't want everyone to know that you are interested. When/if you call me just say that you are looking for Dick because more than likely my dumb sister will pick up the phone.

Sorry to butt in. Why is this sexual with you? LARP at it's highest level demands physical fitness and extreme smarts and battle strategy knowledge. It's really no different than MMA. Both simulate acts of fighting without actually carrying it through to the deaths of the participants. My guess is the next big sport will in fact be role playing games.

As for field tactics, you might spend a little time researching William Wallace, who really had an edge in 14th century guerilla tactics. Choice of battlefield and terrain is at least as important as skill at arms.

Of course, if all else fails, you could build a large, hollow wooden rabbit......

You are playing a role. Sure people might not watch the regular interaction but that is something that can be used for the reality TV aspect of it. Then once a battle is staged or a fight in the arena is going on those who enjoy the sport of it can watch.

There's two different aspects of this, both which are going to be huge.

First, to clear things up, RPG's that involve physically doing battle are sports. "Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others". So, point settled.
Also, RPG's today are not strict reenactments. Most are free flowing with no real set plan or path. The outcome is not predetermined. So, it is a sport based on an older method of competition. Other modern sports got their start the same way. Today's marathon is based on the fabled run of Pheidippides in the Battle of Marathon. The basketball we enjoy, whose origins are often incorrectly attributed to Naismith, is really based on an old Mayan game/ritual that involved the death of the WINNING team. But both the marathon and basketball are widely considered sports. Point being that almost all sports are reenactments of some earlier ritual.

I agree, the second aspect (the online part of RPG) is not a sport. But I think this will only increase the popularity of the sport. Imagine an older person who is not physically able to participate in the physical part of the RPG. However, with technology today (GPS), he can log on to a battle and watch in real time and caution his teammates in the field about the locations of the enemy and advise them on the proper counter strategies.
I'm really looking forward to taking on this role myself as I'm not always able to affort the costs of actually buying new gear and traveling to battles.

Anyway, I hope that you at least take some time to look into this and decide for yourself. As opposed to just taking the easy road and dismissing the whole thing.

It's really not pretend. If you handed an MMA fighter a standard broadsword and shield and threw him in the midst of an ongoing LARP battle, he would probably run and hide. Or try to fight and become owned within seconds. So it's not really pretend.
