"They [al Qaeda] think their credibility is on the line because there hasn't been a major attack since 9/11," said one official familiar with intelligence reports on the group.
It goes on to say there hasn't been a major attack because we're arresting them left and right.
Read the whole article. You'll see where we've been rather busy herding up al Qaeda operatives around the world. They're getting desperate to strike so they can demonstrate they're still relevant.
I think this is corollary to what is happening in Iraq. They are increasing the violence in Iraq so the world will think they are bigger than they are.
A last gasp effort, if you will, to gain credibility.
