Texas has one of the richest athletic departments in the country, and the Longhorns got a lot wealthier when the school signed a 20-year, $300 million deal earlier this year to launch its own TV network in conjunction with ESPN.

The Longhorns sit in the middle of one of the country's most fertile recruiting grounds for college prospects, and their football facilities are the envy of just about every other program in the country.

But during last season's disastrous 5-7 campaign, Texas coach Mack Brown learned that none of his program's inherent advantages really matter when the actual games are played.

It was a humbling season for Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns in 2010.
"If you look at places across the country, USC has struggled at times," Brown said. "Nebraska has struggled at times. Michigan has struggled at times. Money doesn't guarantee you wins. Facilities don't guarantee you wins. You still have to line up every Saturday and win."

Last season, Texas didn't win on Saturdays very often. And the Longhorns weren't alone in their futility.

Traditional powerhouses like Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, USC and Tennessee also struggled mightily.

The aforementioned teams, which have combined to win 23 conference titles and six national championships since 2000, went a collective 54-49 in 2010.....

Michigan. I'm not sold on Wisconsin, even with them getting Wilson to play at QB. Add in the Ohio St problems and I think the Big whatever is ripe for a return of the Maize & blue

UT. No way they're under .500 again, although much, imo, depends on what kind of production they get from the all-important QB position. Will be interesting to see how well the new staff gels under Mack Brown. At least 8 wins, although capable of more, depending on variables like those above. Future is bright

Florida and Georgia will probably cancel each other out and be around 8 or 9 wins, I still like the Cocks to win the east. Richt has to win this year or he's gone, and I'm not sure 8 is enough. Muschamp will be fine in the long-run

USC has a ton of talent, and should win no fewer than 8 games. I still hate their miserable coach, but even he can't get in their way enough to force them under .500

Tennessee is not recruiting well enough to climb back into the top of the SEC East. Don't see anything more than shitty bowl games in December for their future...

...Same with Miami. FSU is back, and with SEC teams (among others) regularly raiding the fertile recruiting grounds around that city, I just don't see much in their future. It's going to take a special coach to come in and return them to national prominence

Well to be honest UGA had some down years in the 80's and 90's but let's not get carried away. They're one of the winning-est program in all of college football. 11th most if I remember correctly. They're 6th in all time bowls and 3rd in bowl wins. Pop Warner was their coach for god sakes! The only thing they haven't done recently is win a national championship. Their record in the last 10 years stands up against the Texas, USC, Ohio St and the rest. I think 2007 was the biggest wasted opportunity for the NC.

Hope Sept 3rd is good. I'd hate to have to sit through another shitty year like last year.

Yeah Notre Dame seems poised for a breakout year more than any other program that's been "down" for awhile. The one thing about them that makes no sense is why Brian Kelly has been so decisive and sure Dayne Christ is their starter even after they played like shit with him last year and then ran the table once Tommy Rees tookover.
