As the NBA lockout continues, players are finding ways to stay in basketball shape and at the same time, give basketball fans something to cheer for.

The Carmelo Anthony Summer Pro-Am tour rolled through Baltimore on Monday night, attracting a packed house to St. Frances for what was billed as a heavyweight battle between NBA stars Kevin Durant and Brandon Jennings.

However, before Durant and Jennings took the court, Baltimore native and current San Antonio Spurs Guard Gary Neal led his squad to a 74-66 victory.

“It’s always good to have pros come back play in an involvement like this, especially in the time during the lockout where the basketball season is in question; it was definitely a good thing for the community.” Neal said.

Neal, who played for Calvert Hall and Towson University ran the point for his team, settling into a role as the distributor through three-quarters.

The game was even until the final minutes, when Neal took over and tallied nine points in less than 60 seconds to pull his team ahead.

”The first three-quarters, I did a little moving the ball and getting everybody involved,” Neal said. “In the fourth quarter, I was a little more assertive and aggressive.”

Granted it’s just an exhibition game, but it seems like the Spurs’ 3-point specialists hasn’t missed a bit and is trying to work on his point guard skills over the summer which is a good thing.

The departure of George Hill and Chris Quinn has left the Spurs thin on the point guard rotation.

If Neal is able to play the facilitator’s role, then Tony Parker could rely on another ball handler aside from Spurs draftee Cory Joseph once the NBA season resumes.

That's like serving a starving man a delicious pizza and saying "oh by the way, I shook my pubes on it".

Cut Bon Bon some slack. I heard he's made some strides this summer thanks to Shawn Bradley's big man camp.

Whenever it is the Spurs play basketball again, this cat is going to make fans forget Hill ever existed.

Even if it turns out that Neal is more lethal offensively, he doesn't have the physical tools to be the versatile, plus defender Hill is, nor to get to the line nearly as much. I can't see him being better, let alone "make fans forget Hill ever existed". But I can see Neal soon establishing himself as one of the best off the bench scorers in the league.

Because of how this team is constructed and what their goal is, almost every player on the team is, if not crucial, at least very important, but Neal will be especially important, for two reasons. 1) There's a good chance PG will be the thinnest position on the team and 2) There's an even better chance Neal will be the only shot creator outside of the big three.

Meh. Hill had regressed defensively...and if Neal is going to be playing backup point he can't be that much worse than Hill was. Hill routinely got burned by quick PG's

Hill's play last season did a good enough job of letting Spurs fans forget he existed.

Gotta give it to Gary Neal. From the little that's published during the offseason, he's doing everything he can to improve his PG play, which is exactly what the team needs and what was asked of him by management pre-lockout. We don't have access to whatever private workout regimen he's doing, but based on this report and what we know of Neal, I bet he's working his tail off to improve his playmaking and facilitating skills.

We'll see if he's got the talent to pull it off, but if this guy fails, it seems it won't be for lack of effort. Can't ask anything else. Especially at his price.

Can anyone tell me Gary Neal's stats? Sure it's awesome that he got 9 points in a minute, but I want to see how many points he scored in total, and how many assists and steals he got.
