Arsenal get it started tonight with Udinese

I like them to win at home, but goals may be tough to come by if the lineup is as expected, with Van Persie serving out his suspension (still mad about that too) Good to see both Walcott and Jack in the SL (and no Arshavin)

Really looking for Wilshere to have a big game. Go get em' Gooners!!!

Expected Starting Line-up:

Arsenal
Starting line-up
W. Szczesny
B. Sagna
L. Koscielny
T. Vermaelen
K. Gibbs
A. Song
J. Wilshere
Gervinho
T. Rosickı
T. Walcott
M. Chamakh

I really like what I'm seeing from Gervinho. Dude is very fast, does an excellent job running off the ball, and is unafraid to go right at defenders.

Arsenal is already skewing their attack up the right side where Gervinho is because he's so active and always available

Props to Szczesny on a great breakaway save

Yeah, I know. they've played like shit the last 20 minutes or so

I cringe every time Di Natale gets the ball

Typical Arsenal, burst out the gates, play really well for 25 mins, then lose their way and give Udi some confidence

Walcott is so frustrating. He could be amazing for England but a lot of the time his crossing and finishing is really bad.

Theo should've had two fucking goals. Gervinho set him up brilliantly after making a beautiful run late in the game and he tried to cutesy it into the goal instead of burying it. This seems to be a problem for Arsenal in general. They've had enough chances, it's time to put those in the back of the net

Tbh, I think if Udi had more legs under them the Gunners would've had a much more difficult time holding them off.

I'll take the clean sheet, but I expect a much tougher match next week. Arsenal will need more than it gave today in Italy. Going to be a murderous stretch, with Liverpool, Udinese, and then ManUTD

I only watched highlights from the Udinese game, but this whole Arsenal team reeks of insecurity.
I hope Wenger realizes Rosicky is NOT the answer - no matter what the question is. Right now, there are not many rumours linking Arsenal to defenders. I wonder if that's a good or a bad thing. And as far as getting replacements for Cesc and Nasri goes, I doubt Wenger will line up the money necessary to get rumored players like Hazard or Mata.
By the way, it has taken Gibbs all of two games to get injured - who would have thought? :rolleyes Good thing Arsenal has reliable backups for this position. Oh, wait ...

agree with all your points. Rosicky will get replaced in the starting lineup when Wilshere gets back. Dude runs out of gas after 60 minutes or so and although he has some moments, he's just not able to control the midfield adequately.

Frimpong was sent in when Rosicky was pulled against Udi, and "rough" is the word that comes to mind. He's very young and has to develop more, imo, before he becomes a sensible option.

Diaby won't be back until September at the earliest. Gunners are really going to have to scrap for points in the early going

I would rather see Arshavin than Rosicky, because Arshavin at least can score goals and pick out the right pass as well as Rosicky can.
Frimpong could add some muscle to our defensive midfield, but I agree with you - he ist very raw at the moment.
I'm not that sad we won't see Diaby for a while, to be honest. In my eyes, he is even more useless than Rosicky. Lots of talent, but no brains whatsoever. I would like him to leave Arsenal sooner rather than later.
Wenger might want to wait till he knows for sure if Arsenal will reach the group stages of the CL before finalizing any transfer moves - let's just hope he does SOMETHING.

Arsenal's lineup against Udinese:
WS, Jenkinson, Sagna, Djourou, TV, Song ,Frimpong, Ramsey, Walcott, Gervinho, Van Persie

Sounds about right. Playing with two DM is a good decision in a game you don't need to win, I think. Let's hope Ramsey is up for being the creative engine of the team.

All things considered, this was an almost surprisingly good performance by Arsenal and a deserved win in the end.
The last 20 minutes of the first half were poor and showcased Arsenal's vulnerability at the back. I have no idea what Djourou was doing on that goal - "out of position" barely describes it.
But apart from that, Arsenal were the better side. Gervinho was good, Song had a good second half, RvP and Walcott scored important goals. Hell, even Rosicky was surprisingly good at playing defence.

Muser
08-24-2011, 06:13 PM
This game sums Walcott up really. Great at getting into positions and into goal scoring opportunities but rarely will he take them. Also he sucks at crossing but that's pretty much a trait all english wingers have.

Yeah, getting a point is very good for Arsenal considering the way the game went. Unfortunately, of course, to concede this late and tis way, but still, if Dortmund had been more clinical, they would have been up 2-0 after 10 minutes.

Business is business...football is football. There aren't that many ways to beat Barca, and for an under-matched opponent, AKA all of their opponents, it's understandable to pack everyone into the defense especially after going up 1-0. How often do teams go up 1-0 vs. Barca? How often do teams go up 1-0 vs. Barca, continue attacking and leaving the defense vulnerable against a very fast reacting team, and actually hold the lead and win?

It just seems like the logical thing to do once winning, since it's so hard anymore to win against Barca for any team. To me it seems douchey to complain when teams do this...what do you expect? Barcelona just had the most dominant team of all the clubs in the world this past season and they got significantly stronger/deeper over the off season. I obviously understand you're complaining because it makes for an uglier match, but it makes sense to play ultra-defensively after going up 1-0 vs. Barca. Perhaps that isn't the most attractive way to play, and you could say it's disrespecting the game...but Barca aren't entirely looking out for what's best for football either, when they have Messi, Villa, Pedro, Sanchez, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Thiago, Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano, Dani Alves, Pique, Puyol, etc. Every single game they can have the best attacking midfielders in the world playing, the best forward along with some other elite forwards, and world quality defenders....and still have world-class players of the three positions on the bench. Other top clubs would love to have the players Barca has on the bench.

Just seems funny to complain about something like this, it's like telling the opponents: OK, we're going to play the best players in the world against you and ensure 70-85% ball possession, we're going to get roughly 20 shots off guaranteed, and you must not play defensively.

If Milan did the same thing against an equal or inferior opponent, I get your point, but IMO expecting the best of both worlds (fair, aesthetic game vs. player disparity) is weak.

It just seems like the logical thing to do once winning, since it's so far anymore to win against Barca for any team. Barca. Agree 100%. We're talking about the best team in the world, a team that overwhelmed every team on earth LAST season and still went out and spent 70 million Euros over the summer, including a captain of another major club to be a freakin' sub. As you said, they control the majority of possession on any given night, and whenever teams try to play aggressively, Barca ALWAYS punishes you.

Why the hell should any team be expect to play to Barca's strengths? If they don't like it, they shouldn't give up a goal in 23 seconds, or whenever. It's like playing the original USA dream team and bitching when Greece uses Hack-a-Shaq.

Also, because you blame Mourinho for these "defensive" tactics, it's obvious you haven't watched any football before Messi became "God." But it's ok, let's talk about 09-present... Do you not remember that awful fucking Barcelona v Chelsea tie? 1st leg at Nou Camp, Bartha plays 11 in the box the whole fucking game, then in the return leg Iniesta (lol injured) scores a fluky fucking goal to go to Rome.

Managed to watch the second half before work this morning.. Milan were immense in D especially Nesta really proud of the way they stuck to it for 90 minutes considering it was just their second game of the season .. but playing that deep for that long against Barca is asking for trouble. One tiny mistake here or there and Barca can rip you apart.

And LMAO at Allegri... Milan is going no where playing Clarence fucking Seedorf in their big games.. if your going sit your ass back for 90 minutes why not put some speed in the midfield to counter attack as soon as Milan won possession the ball would go to Seedorf and he would lose it immediately because hes so slow.

Anyway great result for Milan .. heaps of room for improvement though.

Injuries my friend. It would have been nice to have Robinho in a winger position. But since he's banged up, Clarence and Cassano had to start the match, then Seedorf move to center mid once Boateng got injured around the 30th (iirc), and fucking Ambro had to fill the void.

Also, i know it's only been two games, but I'm loving how Aquilani is fitting with this group. Milan could have used the likes of Pirlo today, but Aquilani def showed a lot of promise with this squad

After everything, it's always nice to see how one's favorite team matches up against the best in the world.

I't's probably a combination, both are factors imo. I noticed too that lately, unless they're playing Madrid, they sort of seem complacent and don't always play with intensity and desperation. But they can get away with it. Other teams have to go out and give a great performance to win any trophy. Barca knows this game doesn't have huge implications, and at least throughout last year they really brought it for every huge important game I can remember.

They've obviously stepped it up for the last 2 return legs vs. Arsenal (lol 1st leg teaser, 2nd leg rape). They went through Real in the UEFACL semis and totally dominated ManU in the final. And obviously most of the other games vs. Madrid this past year went pretty well for Barca. Even in the Copa del Rey when they lost, they played the better game but lost due to dangerous counters off dumb mistakes.

I wonder if losing Sanchez and Iniesta will give them motivation to step it up from here on out.

http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/championsleague/story/tevez-denies-refusing-to-play-for-manchester-city-092811

Carlos Tevez claimed Wednesday that he was ''misunderstood'' and did not refuse to play in Manchester City's Champions League match at Bayern Munich.

The striker issued a statement contradicting the account of manager Roberto Mancini, who said the player's career at City was over for refusing to come off the bench in the second half of the 2-0 loss on Tuesday.

''I would like to apologize to all Manchester City fans, with whom I have always had a strong relationship, for any misunderstanding that occurred in Munich,'' Tevez said in a statement. ''They understand that when I am on the pitch I have always given my best for the club.

''In Munich on Tuesday I had warmed up and was ready to play. This is not the right time to get into specific details as to why this did not happen. But I wish to state that I never refused to play.''

Tevez appeared to refuse to leave the substitutes' bench when Mancini wanted to bring him on for Samir Nasri with around 30 minutes to go with City was already trailing 2-0.

''There was some confusion on the bench and I believe my position may have been misunderstood,'' Tevez said. ''Going forward I am ready to play when required and to fulfill my obligations.''

It follows a turbulent period for the player who left crosstown rival Manchester United in the 2009 offseason as part of City's bid-spending rebuilding of the squad under Abu Dhabi ownership.

The 27-year-old Tevez captained City last season and lifted the FA Cup for the club in May - City's first major trophy since 1976.

But it came after he asked to leave the club in January and the May triumph was followed by him again pushing for a transfer during the offseason to be closer to his family in Argentina.

But no club met City's reported 50-million pound ($79 million) asking price and he has started just one Premier League game of six so far, the Sept. 10 victory over Wigan when he featured for 61 minutes.

Mancini announced in Munich that he plans to speak with City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak in the coming days to discuss Tevez's future after declaring ''with me, he's finished.''

''If I decided, yes (he would leave) - he wanted to leave last year,'' Mancini said. ''I helped him for two years every time. He refused to play. I cannot accept this behavior from him. I decide the substitutions, not Carlos.''

Good to see that Torres has two goals for Chelsea.

I really don't know what to make out of this Arsenal/Marseille game. At least Arsenal's defense is holding up and they're playing a Marseille team that hasn't given up a goal so I'm not surprised to see that Arsenal are having problems scoring against them.

In this condition the only Team better than Bayern is Barca. Manu, Real being on the same level, but only Barca is slightly better.
