First, it's a reliable source (Lyon's local newspaper).
Second, it says that Parker should sign with his team in France (ASVEL) and plays his first game on October 14th.

Good news

At least he won't be rusty when the NBA season starts

he denied it today though, claiming that nothing is signed, and that he is planning to look into it only after the euro.
He would like to play for that team, but said it will be complicated as he just signed a 4 years contract, hence expensive insurance.

Not only did he said that nothing has been signed yet with ASVEL, but he also added that right after the Euro he'll first go back to SA for a medical check-up with Spurs doctors. Then, he'll try to figure out a way to get over these (very) costly insurance issues

Is he actually allowed to have contact with the team doctors?

What TP will do is just awesome. He will be paid the min salary (1500€ per month), he will pay himself his huge insurance and he will give 3000 jerseys to fans for his first game.

Even if he will do some money with advertisement and will raise the value of the team he partially owned, what he is doing is great in a professional sport world where money rules it all. With such a great leader and after the silver medal at the Eurobasket, I hope basketball will grow even more in France. Soccer and rugby being such a disaster should help too.

So if these guys play for next to nothing in Europe why are they having such problems coming up with an agreement to play in the NBA? :greedy:greedy:greedy

Kobe will not play for next to nothing :greedy

But for Parker:
- He is a team owner
- The team Payroll is about 2.5 M$... there is no way the team could pay him a significant salary. This is also why he will pay his insurance.
- Playing in France he will be more present in the French media and will try to become a real star. He will also be able to help ASVEL and French basketball development.
- I read he will make 5 M$ in endorsement... it is not like he needs a salary.

He is in a situation similar to Jordan with the Wizards.

Awesome?
He's the owner so he has to pay himself. He's not dumb.If his salary is high then he would have to put the money back in the team and he would have to pay higher taxes.

It is 20% (with an option for 20 more)

Bull shit. I seriously doubt he owns that much. Their budget was 6-8 million euros a year for several years in a row. No way Parker is spending that much money (20% of that a year) on that club.

I call total bull shit on him owning that much of the club.

20% stake does not mean he pays for 20% of the team budget :nope

yes it does.

no it does not. Do you know anything about (any) professional sport? Are you assuming the team has no source of income at all? If that is the case, you are wrong. Even in France teams have sponsors, ticket sale proceeds, etc.

European clubs pay the bills and expenses of their players genius. You think owners of large businesses work from their personal checking accounts.

TP owns 33% of l'Asvel. He paid 450K€ to get that. He has an option to be the main owner in 2013.

He also paid $250K on his own to insure his NBA contract for 3 months.

Why didn't he at least "convert" his investment (250K) into a higher % in the club?

Just out of curiosity, where did you get these informations?
I read in several newspaper he is the 2nd owner but never really found anything more specific except dubious reference to 20% + 20% option.

He could have done that but it would have been weird to have a team raising its capital just to pay TP's insurance.

I think that a part of his insurance is paid by sponsors. It's not a coincidence that TP has start doing ads for Toupargel who is also a sponsor of l'ASVEL. IMO they have a deal in place "if you gives me some money to help me paying the insurance, I will play for them and you would get some additional and unexpected exposure through to your ASVEL sponsorship". It's a smart win/win deal.

I saw these numbers in L'équipe 2 or 3 days ago.

PARIS (AP)—Asvel says New York Knicks center Ronny Turiaf(notes) will play for the French club during the NBA lockout.

Turiaf will join San Antonio Spurs guard and fellow Frenchman Tony Parker(notes), who is a part owner of Asvel and also has agreed to play for the club during the lockout.

Turiaf told Asvel’s website on Monday that he plans to arrive in France on Thursday and start practicing with the club this weekend.

6 French NBA players (Parker, Batum, Diaw, Mahinmi, Turiaf and Sy) are back in France. That's a little silver lining of the lockout for French fans.

Yeah.
but I would love to see more NBA players (not french) to play in europe like D. Williams.
Just imagine them conquer Euroleague: Kobe vs Panathiniakos
or D Rose vs Barcelona...
Manu vs Maccabi...
That could be way way more fun than Miami vs dallas rigged NBA finals...

Plus I think that's a way to save the NBA and a way to promote NBA Europe.
Don't know why the league pushing into that direction more during this lockout

American players won't come in Europe for little to no money like French players did. As long as the whole NBA season isn't canceled, most teams won't spend a lot of money for a player who can leave them in the middle of the year.

Regarding the development of the NBA in Europe, it is damn hard to do for the simple reason that games are played in the middle of the night. A true development will only happen with some franchises moving to Europe. The Euro expansion is looking less and less unrealistic. London, Berlin and Paris are great market and have/will have a NBA-ready arena. Add a team in Spain and another one in Italy and it starts looking like a good business plan for the NBA.

It's so weird to think about that option Bruno, but it's also cool how much the game has expanded and what that could look like.
