Just starting this because I figured we'll keep everything in one place (couple of Argie posters here + Other NT fans with the lol Argentina + 34/0 smack :cry :cry :cry, etc). :lol
First friendly today against Venezuela in India, ARG wins 1-0 (Otamendi). Played like shit.
Team was:
Romero
Zabaleta Demichelis Otamendi Rojo
Lucho González Mascherano Ricky Alvarez
Messi Higuaín Di María
Basically, the back 4 is still a disaster. Ricky Alvarez (Inter) made his debut, and he sucked.
This team is still not using the wings. Di Maria should be doing that, but he instead heads to the middle (and ballhogs as usual). Zabaleta rarely went, but then he isn't that good of a back and forth player. Rojo was passive (as usual, IMO, he's no NT material).
Messi, as usual, was the best player on the team.
lol Demichelis back in the NT

Back to front:
Andujar: He did good. If not for him, it's easily 3-0. He should look even better with an actual defense in front of him.
Burdisso, Demichelis: Just ask them to retire so they can't be picked anymore. Slow, poor timing, poorly organized. Inspire no confidence. Rivals run at them.
Otamendi: Poor ball control the little he had it, and it almost cost us. Otherwise, I thought he was the best at the back.
Rojo, Zabaleta: These guys are just not NT caliber. I can't believe there's no other players to fill those roles. Rojo has been tried and tried and he just sucks. Even against Chile, that's where every attack for them went through. Zabaleta is more a midfield than a defender, but he's a very very poor man Dani Alves. These two positions require some major rework.
Mascherano: He defended ok, but he can't be the sole midfield defender AND the outlet where the team builds an offense. He keep getting the ball, dishing it to the sides, then back to him.
Sosa: Who is this guy? Why is he on my team? smh
Di Maria: So much talent, so little brain. If he's not getting into some mazy run he can't get out of, he's hitting a long ball which 1 in 25 times will actually get to the intended target. He just brings a lot of noise. Great player to play counter attack, where he has a lot of field to run, but otherwise, you get very little from him. His help getting back non-existent, as usual.
Ricky Alvarez: What is he supposed to play like? I mean, the guy looks like he has a clue, but when you give him the ball, he generates nothing.
Banegas: It didn't work before with this guy. Why is it going to start working now? He carries the ball like he thinks he's good. And that's part of the problem.
Messi-Higuain-Palacios: ??????? I mean, I can't even say anything about these guys, since they probably touched the ball like 7 times combined in 90 minutes. Nobody to create for them, and just nothing happening. Messi had a few chances he created himself, and that's basically all Argentina created today.
Basically, we're back at square one. When Argentina play teams that come out to play and give you room on attack, they can do damage. But against compact teams or teams that sag back and play counter, we just don't have a clue.
And lol @ Sabella firing the first excuse... "tired" :cry

Rojo and Sosa, dudes that no one fucking knows anywhere, shouldn't ever be considered for the NT. I don't get it. Obviously scrubs like Otamendi, Burdisso, and Demi need to play because Argentina has zero defenders. The future is not looking good for Argentina :lol. They won't win shit in Messi's lifetime because there is no defense. Why the FUCK is Pastore still not playing???
How can a country with so many footballers not produce any relatively athletic defenders, you know, ones that can run over 5 mph? Demichelis is slower than I was at age 9. Put me in there and immediately the defense is stronger because I can at least get to the areas I'm supposed to cover.
ElNono
10-11-2011, 11:52 PM
Pastore should play. He can't be worse than Ricky Maravilla.
As far as the defenders, Micho is 31, Burdisso 29... Basically, they're going to be 34 and 32 by the time the World Cup rolls around.
Did Clemente die? Emiliano Insua? I can't think there's no better left back than Rojo...
Just start playing Pezzella, Pirez... the kids from the U19 played well on defense and they have personality too. I mean, if we're going to lose games against fucking Venezuela might as well get some new blood out there.
If Zabaleta is going to play like that, start trying out other people, like Angeleri.
You know what's gonna happen? They're gonna call Freezelme and this is going to turn into a cabaret again like with Basile.

I don't get why Clemente Rodriguez isn't used...one thing Maradona did right last WC was bring him, and even play him. He was their best wing back, easily. He can control the ball and help out of offense, and has decent wheels, especially compared to the scrubs that have been playing ever since. It makes no sense to not play him when he is the exact opposite of what we have in the center...very slow, unathletic players with subpar ball control.
Pastore should definitely play, he's Argentina's best attacking mid by far. Give him more experience now with the other NT players and by the time next WC rolls around he should be pretty good.
ALVAREZ6
10-12-2011, 12:06 AM
I always revert to the same thing, but I think Mascherano needs to be used in the back just like he is at Barca. If you have more serviceable defensive-mids that can be used in the back, like Mascherano, it makes no sense to keep slow ass, incompetent defenders in the central defense simply because they are traditional defenders. You should maximize the total quality of players on the field and in this case Argentina has Cambiasso, Gago, Banega, and Mascherano who can all be used. Why not use Pastore, Gago, and Cambiasso in the midfield, with Mascherano in the back? Mascherano + Clemente would give them speed in the back that at least helps to diminish their constant vulnerability. The unheard of scrubs and Demi should never step foot on the field, period. They can't be expected to contribute anything ever, against any opponent. It's a complete waste. Shift some of the talent backwards if it's possible.
ElNono
10-12-2011, 12:25 AM
Agree. Mascherano actually plays in the back at Barça because otherwise he wouldn't play. He's a picapiedra. Also, to trot out a 31 year old Demichelis who is likely not going to make it to the World Cup (you would hope!!!!), then play Samuel, who is 33 but a much more solid defender.
I just don't buy we don't have defenders, period. We just always play the same guys. Give Pareja, Garay a shot. As I said before, bring in some of the kids from the U19.
As far as the midfield, I keep saying the same thing: We need a playmaker and good wings. When teams pack it up, we keep going to the middle and playing into their hands.
If I had to put together a team for a game like this one against Venezuela, I would've played:
Andujar
................Mascherano................Otamendi ................
Zabaleta.......................................... ......Clemente
................................Gago.............. ..................
................................Pastore........... .....................
Messi............................................. ...Di Maria
................Palacios................Higuain... .............
And I tell DiMaria and Messi to go towards the outside. It's ok sometimes to cut inside, but we have no play on the wings.
Zabaleta and Clemente can play both the back 4 when Venezuela attacks or the midfield when we have the ball.

That's a good overall lineup...and if Aguero weren't injured he would where Palacios is, and that's a solid squad. It would be a very attacking team since Zabaleta and Clemente can both come forward and play with the wings, and Pastore and Gago can provide good passing for the scorers, as can Messi.

you forgot riquelme, its his fault the team underachieves because of his diva attitude and lack of hustle. Now that his cancer is gone, everyone is happy and running fast and the team is playing to its potential :lol
This is definitely the best venezuela team ever, but the fact is that we are losing to teams that argentina hasnt lost to EVER/ losing by margins we havent lost in ever, despite having the best player in the space time continuum. His consistent 5 goal passes yesterday must have come while I was taking a pee (I think I heard he successfully dribbled past someone for one of those goal passes). Still, I seriously doubt that anyone before or after will ever approach his level- I mean seriously, how could it be possible for such consistent majesty to repeat itself? :rollin
Its not time to panic, but I would like to see one of two things happen:
1) Be defensive, by holding on to the ball. Yesterday, we were so careless that we could barely keep possession, and had a bunch of crap defenders in for no justifiable reason. I think if we want to play like this Pastore has to play and messi has to be either a forward or a wing. Our defense sucks but if we can keep the ball we can protect our D. It could make for really boring games but Id rather be boring than historically bad.
2) Play to our strengths and be super offensive, like Maradona tried. If you dont score or create very clear chances in the first 30-40 minutes, then make subs and look for better match ups. With the amount and quality of forwards we have, against rivals that for the most part hole up and counter, it is inexcusable to not even create chances. Yesterday we had what, like 3-4 shots on goal? Its one thing to get shut down by germany, another by venezuela.
Its hard to have faith in Sabella after he insisted with Rojo despite 4 terrible halfs and resisted making subs till the very end despite being completely ineffective on offense. And the players need to play with a sense of urgency, the only ones who looked mildly interested in winning the game yesterday were masche, higuain, messi, and palacio for the few minutes he was there, everyone else looked like they were in practice. still, I dont think there is much more than this available, so no choice but to support them...

Why do everyone realizes that Demichelis, Milito, Burdisso, etc. suck except for whoever is in charge of the NT? Try anyone except those guys that have already shown that suck.
Campagnaro is one of the best defenders in Italy and yet nobody gives him a try, I wouldn't be shocked if the NT coach didn't know who he is.
Mascherano has played like a year now at CB in the best team in the World at the highest of levels, and again nobody tries him there at least for a half to see how he does.
Di Maria is the purest winger we have and Sabella plays him as center miedfielder, retarded.
Sosa over Pastore? Really?
5 defenders against Venezuela? to play 5 defenders is bad enough but to do it against Venezuela is... I don't know what to say.
I'm tired of these stupid fucks fucking up so bad with so many World class players to choose from.
As much as I hate to say it, Mourinho would do wonders with this team. His 4-2-3-1 with the high defensive line is what this team needs IMO.

I don't like Messi on the wing on that formation 'cause he would have too many defensive obligations, the wings on a 4-2-3-1 have to come down to miedfield when the team is defending, I prefer Messi to rest when the team doesn't have the ball.

Some players play great in their teams and suck in the NT (Cagna comes to mind, but there's plenty of other examples). Maybe he's too young, but the kid had plenty of opportunities. Bring in Clemente, Insua... heck, try Monzon.

I used to root for Argentina in world competitions because they played the right way. Not too dirty, not too defensively. But that is thing of the past.
the main problems I see is that
1) they make terrible mistakes on defense or midfield. That did not use to happen before. I don't know if it's coaching or the talent pool is just not that good. But these new players are just not in the same calibre as past
2) they are disorganized on offense. they don't know what to do. I think this is because they want to involve Messi on most plays but really, Messi is not a true #10. They don't have a playmaker.

we have no identity, and are always playing for results instead of by principle.
Also, how long are we going to keep going with the "they dont play with each other often enough" excuse? This same nucleus has been going for 3 coaches now, since 2008. If that's really the case, then lets play with local players who can put in more work together. Its yet another example of the schizophrenia from the coach/staff. We dont need messi to beat Bolivia at home.
speaking of which (and I realize DAF is going to become extremely upset about this), Messi needs to relax. against bolivia he was forcing and even being selfish. I understand he's trying to put the team on his back, but thats not the way to do it. go to the corners and pull away defenders from the goal so you can set someone else up, dont try to slalom down the middle through 5 players.

I hope you're not serious about that, there's a reason they play in Argentina and don't get sell for millions of dollars and that reason is they suck, at least most of them. Have you forgot the game against Brazil with the local players not to long ago?
What the coaches need to do is to put the biggest amount of players possible in the position they play in their clubs. If Mascherano plays as CB in Barcelona put him there or leave him on the bench, if Di Maria plays as a wing in Madrid put him as wing not as a center miedfielder, etc.
P/S: Thank God Messi plays for us.

I'm saying that if the coaches/players are constantly going to use not playing together as an excuse, then the only logical course is to play with local players who are more available to practice for the NT. how many bolivians and venezuelans play in europe for millions of dollars? exactly.
Also, its not totally accurate to say they all suck, there are players who play locally who are about to leave / have already come back who have shown they are good enough to play on the NT. to beat brazil/italy/germany/spain, those players are not enough. But to beat venezuela and bolivia? yes, they should be more than enough. those friendlies against brazil are not good barometers of anything, especially since they only played two games and didnt use the same roster for each game. If we are going to give the "foreigners" a pass for not playing together enough (when they have been playing together for substantially longer than two games), then why not give that same pass to the local players (who played a far better rival than bolivia or venezuela). I don't WANT a local squad, what I want is for the "we dont play enough together" excuse to stop. First, because many other teams have that problem, and second because we've had the same nucleus for at least 2 years, which have included a WC and a Copa America.
I agree on the last bit about using players in their natural position.

The local players NT thing doesn't work from the get go 'cause let's imagine that we do form a local players NT and by some miracle they play well, it's a given that many if not most of those players will start to draw attention from the Europeans teams and will eventually get sold so then you would have to start all over again to find and work with new players, that's why the local players NT argument is so stupid.

Argentina squad: Sergio Romero (Sampdoria); Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Matias Rodriguez (Universidad de Chile), Ezequiel Garay (Benfica), Federico Fernandez (Napoli), Hugo Campagnaro (Napoli), Marcos Rojo (Spartak); Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Fernando Gago (Roma), Jose Sosa (FC Metalist), Maxi Rodriguez (Liverpool), Pablo Guinazu (Internacional), Eduardo Salvio (Atletico Madrid); Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli), Angel Di Maria (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Gonzalo Higuain (Real Madrid), Sergio Aguero (Manchester City) .

Why is Pastore not included?
Exactly what I don't know. He's by far Argentina's best creative midfielder and has potential to become a great player, he's pretty damn skilled on the ball and can pass. He's worth having on the team, actually worth starting, so he continues to develop and grow with the national team. Who else do they think is going to create for anyone? We've already seen that Messi trying to do everything does not work. You can't have him receive the ball way back deep and then expect him to advance it throughout the game running about everywhere and then finish accurately closer to goal.

Emiliano Insua is our best left-back right now, I would have liked to see him on the squad.

tbh, after a great start with psg, Pastore has been awful since december. Next year with the CL and other "big names" coming to paris, he needs to stop sucking fast. he's a crack though.

A SOCCER player in Argentina has been told to play better or have his leg blown off.
Racing Club midfielder Giovanni Moreno and teammate Federico Santander were approached by three men following yesterday's practice.
One of the men, who was wielding a gun, told Moreno to leave the team and that if they did not win their next game, things would "go very badly."
Another report said they stuck a pistol into his knee and promised to ''blow off'' his leg unless he played better for struggling first-division team, regarded as one of the ''big five'' in the local game.
do these 2 clowns play for the NT?

around 1k probably... have you shopped for it on ebay?
BTW and back on thread topic, I'm expecting Argentina to go back to contender mode now that they have a serious coach :tu
Can't wait for the oldest international and WC classic to be played again as we lost both last qualifiers including the infamous "keep on sucking it" from maradona in our house :ihit
