View Full Version : Where do black people get the names for their kids?
So I was reading an article about Shaquanda Cotton, the 15 year old girl who went to jail in 2006 for roughing up a female teacher in Paris, Texas, and I got to thinking about some of the important social issues of our time. Was this girl treated unfairly because she was black? Would a white student have faced the same consequences? Was her mistake so egregious that she do jail time? Can we as a society ever get past our racial differences and embrace each other as part of the only race that matters, the human race?
Then it hit me, what the fuck is a Shaquanda?
*No Racist*
So where exactly do names like Shaquanda, JaMichael, DaDontrell and Bon'Quisha come from? Are they historically and culturally significant? DaMarcus sounds like an ancient African name, so I assume most of these names are of ancient African origin.

From African History, combing names or from others. My cousin just named his daugther "Neveah". Heaven spelled backwards. Some simply don't like simple names like Mark, Scott, Tim, Karen, Amy, Mary, etc.

I know how Dok and his Asian playmates got theirs...
It's Asian tradition to thrown a coin in the air and let it land where it may...whatever sound you hear after the coin lands is what the name of the kid will be...
So I imagine Dok's dad threw a penny in the air and it landed on a hollow piece of plastic and it sounded like "Dok"....there you have it...:lol

De'Anthony and LaceDarius are a couple of my personal favorites...lol not even caring if the traditional name being modifyied begins with a vowel anymore, crofl De'Anthony. Ja'Allen would be a neat one.
De'Anthony Thomas:

LaceDarius Dunn:

At least they're trying to be creative, can't take that away, and tbh these types of names aren't much worse than the new gay ass trend of naming sons Cayden, Caiden, Jayden, etc, referring to a thread a while back about new popular baby names.
They get them from clinic visits and reading the posters. Syphillis, Chlamydias, Fallopius, Geotometry, and then there's Le-a (ledasha cause the dash don't be silent)

This is true. People name babies never considering they will one day be adults.

Neveah isn't Heaven spelled backwards.
That would be Nevaeh.

The names mentioned in the OP are mostly of French origin. Has nothing to do with Africa.

Whites, esp southern whites and Hollywood-wannabe parents, do the same.
How about southern senator "Saxby Chambliss".
Or girl's first names taken from traditional family names, like Morgan, Campbell, Connor, etc.
Seems like everybody (esp mothers) want to give their kids a "stage" name because "their" kid is so unique and different and better.
And of course, the genius Carlin nailed it:

I'm the first one to bash the shit out of those faggy ass modern white names. In fact, there's been multiple threads in here asking for baby name advice then mentioning those exact kind of names and then me going in and throwing a tirade about them. Now with that said, you can't even compare the two. At least with the pretentious faggy white names they're under 10 letters and are easily pronounceable. Meanwhile the black names are always at least 3 syllables and need a good couple look-overs before even attempting to pronounce them
