Three 50+ win seasons, had Kobe and Shaq for a while there, and as soon he was replaced by Phil Jackson (not counting Bertka or Rambis here, both interim coaches pretty much) they three-peat.
Discuss.

Del had more talent than Phil did ........
1997 and 1998 squads had
Shaquille O'Neal
Nick Van Exel
Eddie Jones
Rick Fox
Jon Barry
Kobe Bryant
Corey Blount
Elden Campbell
Derek Fisher
Robert Horry
Sean Rooks
Shea Seals
Ced Ceballos
Bryon Scott
Travis Knight
Rumeal Robinson
Mario Bennett
Now you look at that core in bold for those two years ...... they had a really good, young, athletic squad but didn't have that seasoned vet around them other than B. Scott.

Don't even start me on Del Harris' punk ass. He wouldn't even play Kobe until an injury to EJ in his second season. Like Ashy said, Del had way more talent than PJ had as Lakers' coach. I still rue the day the EJ/Seldom Campbell trade for Glen Rice. Imagine running the triangle with these players:
Shaq
Horry
Fox/Eddie
Kobe
NVE
^They would have won at least 5 rings together. But NVE was a knucklehead (insert Fisher) and Eddie was traded. But Del cost us at least 3 more titles.

They all were losers until PJ got there, tbh. But if PJ had that 1997 squad :wow. I mean he 3 peated with Shaq/Kobe and "good veteran complimentary players." 1996-1999 were probably the most athletic teams in NBA history. They were like the 1990 UNLV Running Rebels. But they didn't have a good coach. What a pity. :(

I recall in 1998, the Lakers did have a really great year, but Jerry West, still GM, was really pissed off with the team. He didn't think they were very mature, he gave some speech that told them that 1998 could "Read Lakers", if they wanted it to. However, Jerry takes the blame for Del Harris as coach; as far as I know, he hired him.
So maybe Del Harris cost the Lakers one title, maybe. Couldn't get by Utah, and Chicago was awaiting....
Coaches always cost teams titles. If they can be credited with the win, they can be blamed for the loss.

I think they matched up really well with Chicago back then. The Lakers presented several mismatches for them that could have been exploited. If they could have only gotten past Utah. :bang

Maturity and chemistry didn't kick in until Phil had a year with them. Not much Harris could do, LAL needed a coach like Phil and no other coach probably would have delivered.

Woha there. When Doc didn't have talent, he didn't make the finals either.
