I have special access because I bought the limited edition of medal of honor. I don't know when it goes open.
They sent me a code this morning while I was at work and the first thing I did when I got home was enter it. It's 1.3 gigs so it might take a bit. 60% now.

Some glitchy textures, it's a little hard to differentiate between friend and foe in dark areas, grenades look like little square apples when you throw em, and this is obviously meant to be played on a PC.
I wish the name icon was a little higher or a lot lower. Maybe it's because I wasn't used to it, but I kept confusing friend and foe in firefights because the ally names would pretty much cover the head/chest of any enemies in front of them.
Players go down pretty quickly, maybe 2 or 3 shots depending on the location, I actually like this because at midrange and beyond the recoil really takes a toll and accuracy dives.
Can't wait for it to arrive for my PC.
Played it early as well on the 360. Seems like it is going to be an amazing PC game.. that's pretty much how I feel if you get my drift.

need more opinions
I will say that the best thing that I noticed about the beta is that the weighty controls seem to be gone. The movement is much more fluid and you don't feel like you are driving a tank. The beta is very striped though, at least on the 360. The graphics are average to slightly above average.. The outside part is pretty impressive but in the subway it is really hard to see what is going on and half the time you are just randomly shooting hoping there is someone in the distance.
I do still have high hopes for the game and it will be a day one buy for me. That said I can only imagine how amazing it will be on PC.. but I'm not a PC guy (not knocking it).
I am really hoping that a rotation of this, Gears, and Skyrim.. will keep my COD playtime pretty limited this year and keep my gaming diverse (especially in the online multiplayer department.)
Look forward to getting back home and playing the beta again. Oh and love the feel of the guys.. has just the right amount of recoil where you have to burst fire in order to be effective. Snipe shots don't seem to drop as much as in Bad Company 2. And the complaint on grenades I feel the same way.. looks like I'm throwing a potato out there and can't throw it more than 2 feet.
But again I'm use to the unrealistic CoD series where your player is Dan Marino and can throw a grenade 80 yards.
jman3000
09-28-2011, 05:05 AM
yeah. I kept thinking there was a cook on the grenades only to have it leave my hands. Did it about 3 times going up the escalator only to have it bounce back in my face.
Have you run into spots on the map (outside part) where you fall through and go under the map? I happened on two of them. Both are right around A and one is right by a tree.. the other is on the side of the bridge right directly in front of A.
The more I play it (and play it slow like and tactical like it is ment to be) the more I like it. I just hope this is an old build because there are big time issues and not much time before release.
Well, not huge issues. Just that the kill cam half the time you are watching the person and seeing through the bottom of the map... I have plenty of times when my sprint doesn't work.. and often it wont let me bring up my weapon. I guess those are easy to fix. What I hear is this beta is from where they were at 2 months ago.. so I am excited if these are fixed.
Other than that I have to say taking the weighty controls out of this game sold me on it.. those controls were the main reason I had issues with bad company 2.. the control is pretty damn smooth now.

I fell through the map by the radar just a bit ago. took me a couple minutes to get out. There are other exploits I saw people using where all of their body was underneath the map except for their head. They were shooting at our spawn and barely half their head was above ground.

I am a huge BF:BC2 fan...played the hell out of it.
If this beta represents what is going to be released, save your fucking money. It isnt even close to being ready for retail.
Havent figured out how to take screenshots and most of the people playing are fanboys to the core, but needless to say, holy shit.
Its only one map, but the brief time that you are outside, the texture that should be "the ground" is gone. Not there. Nonexistent (for me). Its incredibly hard to discern what is what when you lack a floor, wholesale.
Lag. My freaking God, lag. Unplayable, for me. Everything is almost "OK" when youre getting from one place to another, but the very moment an enemy comes in view or God forbid, an explosion goes off, crippling lag. I went 4-14 in my 3rd game...the best I had done up until that point. I am not as good as most of these guys, I am not delusional. But I absolutely chalk it up to never-ending lag kills. The moment I pull the trigger, its a fucking stop motion claymation show that ends in me dying.
The chat window sucks. Bad. The launcher...this Battlelog or wtf ever, sucks. The interface in general, sucks.
Did I mention that this one map that EA released for Beta is full of holes? Youre running along, then you fall through the world and have to Suicide. This isnt every now and then, this happens all the time in many, many different locations, inside and out.
I cant get a smooth enough play experience to tell you anything about the gunplay, the mechanics, the unlocks, the squad play...anything. The game is so bad in its current state, I seriously cannot get past it.
There arent any words to explain how hugely disappointed I am right now. I hope DICE can pull off a miracle in less than 30 days, because the game is going to need it.
Going to try and install the new "BF3" nVidia drivers the Battlelog (or wtfever) keeps going on about. Maybe it makes a difference graphically, but drivers wont fix lag.

Maybe it was your internet connection?
I just finished playing a match on my PC (6870 + phenom 2 x4 955) and I experienced no lag at all. It was actually MUCH MUCH better than the 360 version. Everything was crisper, I killed a lot more, the problems with telling friend from foe were gone and didn't fall through the Earth at the gazibo like I did on the 360.
I actually found it extremely enjoyable.

On further thought, it might just be the map and lag. To me, BF has never been a corridor, close-range shooter and yet DICE decided to release that travesty of a map for beta testing.
Holes everywhere, no expansive environments...the moment you get past the first two bomb points, its allllll subway tunnels for the rest of the game.
Really lame.

Maybe I am just getting old and video games in general just disappoint me these days.
The more I play it the more I love it. But then again I was a huge Medal of Honor fan and it feels like almost a mix of BC2 and MoH.
Odd to hear that they threw out such a lack luster beta on the PC as well. Really bad marketing to throw such an unfinished beta out this close to release.
Oh and you make a great point.. the interface sucks. On the 360 it is a pain in the ass to send invites and get a squad together.

Never played battlefield downloaded the beta and was having fun with it. I have put in countless hours in cod so its nice to play something new. Although killing people has a different feel to this game than cod does. Cod is more arcade style and bf is more realistic/strategy.

I was just looking at upgrading my GPUs the other day (4x 295). Now benchmarks dont even include my cards.
Yeah. Its time. 2x 590s.
EDIT: Nevermind. 2x 580s, seems the 590s are unstable and hard to find.
EDITED AGAIN: Seriously, nevermind upgrading at all. It seems the consensus is that the 295 is a beastly card that 1 for 1, is equivalent to the new 480s. 295s arent DX11, thats the only difference.
Moreover, it seems a new generation of cards are on the horizon. Something called Keppler?

PC version has Caspian Border as a map but 0 servers running it. I wonder if they're going to open it up the 2nd week.
Very disappointed in this game. It's choppy even though I have a high FPS. The graphics are just shit. The one map we can play is shit. Weapon damage is all over the place. Do I really have to go through an entire dance before I knife someone? Can't I just stick it in the throat? Shooting through walls, cars, rocks, the group... So disappointed. Looks like I'll stick with BFBC2 and it's shitty hit regs and rubber knives.
Really glad I didn't pre-order.

It's better thank BFBC2 but still pretty bad. The ground is simply laughable. This really sucks since the game promotes going prone in the bushes and the ground is in your face all the time. I do have a high end card btw. I did hear it's supposed to be better later on but I'll reserve judgement for myself.
Some people really love it. I just can't take another game that forces WW1 reenactments.

From a business point of view it was bad business. I don't mean because of them releasing a beta but more so because of the quality of the beta.
From a gamers point of view.. yeah.. great move.
Personally, I'm probably one of the few that was one the fence with getting it and it actually convinced me I want it instead of not wanting it.
The level of customization.. the better animations and controls.. those were the things that pulled me over to wanting to get it.
Is going to be a damn good game. I know Randy is getting it but not sure who else. But these games are such a blast when you get a whole squad together of friends and use team work to run people over.

That's normal for new games. Are you serious? Do you remember when MW2 came out and every idiot camped for kills? Camping is ridiculous until the meta shakes out, then you LOL at campers and cap around them. Pretty simple.

I tried playing it last night. I know my system is not top of the line, but it is an I7, 8gb ram and a GTS240. I know the video card is not top of the line, but the graphics looked terrible. Bad looking textures, choppy movement, and all of the colors would fade to gray/blue sometimes after a death and would come back if I walked near flames or was killed again. The sounds also seemed to be laggy and kinda random in the directions they came from.
I couldn't really focus much on gameplay, as the poor graphics and weird feel of the lobby/death screens were very distracting. Odd things I saw:
1. Many players crawling around prone everywhere.
2. Hacks already being used to sort of teleport you to the enemy or C4 kill you. (very weird)
3. It is very difficult to see your enemies on the subway level. I hope this isn't some gameplay aspect. Only with big graphics improvements could this possibly work.
4. I had touble getting to the options menu to check things like keyboard shortcuts or graphics settings. The ESC key doesn't seem to work half the time.
In short, even though this is supposed to be a BETA, I expected more of a DEMO type of experience. If this game is going to come out next month, it needs some major patches to get there. After playing, I am not nearly as excited about the game as I was before.

GTS240 lol.
I believe I clearly said it wasn't top of the line. It's definitely not terrible, and has never noticeably hurt performance on any others games I play. Sure, I can go and get twin 560s and put them in, but this BETA doesn't leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling that it would make it that much more playable.

Sorry, but yes it is. That card is functionally weaker than a 9800GT, which was released almost 4 years ago and wasn't top of the line back then. Any modern game is going to depend on your videocard being fairly robust, much more than any other aspect of your system, and Battlefield 3 is the most demanding game in existence at the moment. The 240 is a derivative of the 215 which is essentially one step up from an integrated chipset. It was never meant to even attempt running BF3.
Get yourself a 6870, 6950, or Ti560 and it won't even seem like the same game.

I run a 6870 and the game still looks like shit. The only thing I like better about this game are the hit registrations. Everything else blows. You can't even say it's realistic because it's not at all. When people camp like that you can call in artillery or have mortars dropped on them. The game we're playing right now is basically a WW1 reenactment with bad graphics. It sucks.

But will this make the gameplay good? I don't feel it will based on playing the BETA. And I do play other games without problems all the time. (COD-BO, Crysis 2, MOH, Fallout NV, Mass Effect 2, etc.) Non of these games felt crippled like this one does, and it's not really just graphics that are doing it.
I couldn't really focus much on gameplay, as the poor graphics from my twenty year old video card couldn't handle this cutting edge, not even released yet game.

I'm not sure the contract argument works when AT&T is always offering early discounted upgrades.
I can't speak for anyone else but the upgrade would cost me right around 340.00. If I can sell my iPhone 4 for 300-340, I'd probably do so.
As for being underwhelmed, I'm not sure why anyone is surprised based on Apple's release history.
All this spec bs gets old to me. My iPhone 4 does everything I throw at it, and I'm sure it will do SIRI too with some hacks. At this point we're sort of getting where PC's have gotten, which is to say nobody really needs a new one because there isn't much of anything software wise pushing the need for new hardware.

I said from the beginning it was out of date. Yet I don't have these issues with other games just the BETA. I know it’s a BETA, but as others have questioned, why release something with so many bugs? I was just looking for a discussion about it, since I had been eagerly waiting for the release for a while and played it for the first time yesterday.

I didn't think I had to say it but the obvious exception is gaming. There may be some exceptions for HD video editing and some Photoshop work.

Yeah knew you didn't mean gaming, just getting back at you for laughing at my stoneage card. I guess I will have to look at upgrading sooner than later. Was look at the 560 that CH had mentioned. You or anyone have a good suggestion, bang for the buck, or even a twin setup?

Craigslist ftw? I used this Passmark link I got from here to help me out a bit and point me in the right direction.
The card I originally had was ranked 76th, the one I upgraded to which cost me 125.00 on Craigslist - 50.00 that I sold my old card for which equals 75.00, anyhow that card is ranked 15th. The card you linked to ranks 9th, and the card you had ranks 102.

General benchmarks are generally useless. That ranks the 6850 ahead of the 6870, but I can tell you from first hand experience having owned both that the 6870 is much superior.
I think it's useful generally speaking as a guide. Sometimes naming conventions can be confusing, and sometimes the highest quality last generation card is better than the lowest quality next generation card, so something like this can help.

DICE has openly stated that this Beta was a TRUE beta, as in, an engine that was over a month older than their most recent build. They also said that they were releasing it for people to test out and find bugs, not to play the game. They apologized for all the glitches, and said they would be fixed by the time the game releases. They have stated with certainty that the "falling through map" glitch, the latency problems, and all other major issues will not ship with the full game. Some of the problems are going to be hotfixed with the beta, but others will only be ready for the full release.
How much truth there is in that statement is open to interpretation, but I trust DICE, they tend to not take customer feedback lightly.

The thing is, how often are Betas released 1 month before the game is coming out? Usually its the demo that comes out with that time frame. I hope they have everything worked out by then. I will probably wait for a few months anyway as there are too many games coming out/came out to play right now.
