Patriots QB Tom Brady passed for 1,327 yards in September -- more than anyone else had managed in a three-game stretch in the history of the NFL.

Wasn't enough to win AFC player of the month honors.

Ryan Fitzpatrick was named the conference's top offensive performer after leading the Bills past Brady's Patriots and two other teams on their way to a 3-0 start and a first-place perch in the AFC East. Fitzpatrick has passed for 841 yards and nine TDs while engineering the first consecutive comebacks of 18-point-plus deficits in league history.

Browns ILB D'Qwell Jackson (30 tackles, 2.5 sacks) was the AFC's top defensive player for September while Raiders K Sebastian Janikowski, who kicked a record-tying 63-yard FG in Week 1 earned the special teams nod.

In the NFC, Aaron Rodgers of the undefeated Packers earned top NFC offensive billing for the month (917 passing yards, eight TD throws) while leading the NFL in completion percentage (71.8%) and passer rating (120.9). Cowboys ILB Sean Lee showed why he displaced Keith Brooking, leading the conference with 31 tackles while picking off two passes for the NFC's top-ranked defense. Lions K Jason Hanson won the special teams award (35 points).

Panthers QB Cam Newton (1,012 passing yards, four TD passes, two TD runs) was named the offensive rookie of the month while Redskins OLB Ryan Kerrigan (12 tackles, two sacks, pick six INT) earned the defensive nod.

This is what I dont understand about these player of the month things.
Are they going for stats alone or stats plus current standing of the team?

Whoever makes the decisions need to make up their mind already on how they choose players.
