Washington (CNN) - Ten days after the military dumped its "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays and lesbians, the Pentagon has issued new rules allowing military chaplains to perform same-sex marriages, but only if allowed by law and the chaplain's beliefs.

"A military chaplain may participate in or officiate any private ceremony, whether on or off a military installation, provided that the ceremony is not prohibited by applicable state and local law," a memo released Friday says.

"Further a chaplain is not required to participate in or officiate a private ceremony if doing so would be in variance with the tenets of his or her religion."

The new policy allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military went into force September 20. In May, before the end of "don't ask, don't tell," the Navy was forced into an embarrassing about-face when if first OK'd and then changed its mind on marriages on military bases.

The new military rules on marriages must be in line with the Federal Defense of Marriage Act and local laws.

Amazing that the military is so far ahead of the civilians.

Wasn't the same true of the black integration?

Yup. Desegregation of the military occurred in 1948.

At least they aren't forcing the chaplains to go outside of their beliefs.

Why is there a need among the gay community to force everyone to recognize they are gay in the military? Wow, you can't put down you're gay on an app... ohh the horror.

They also couldn't hold hands with their loved ones, kiss, bring them to social events, etc etc.

Here's an easy comparison: imagine not being able to let your boss know that you were a heterosexual, or you'll be fired.

Wow they can't hold hands and kiss in the military, imagine that. They can bring them to social events just be guy pals, not butt fuckers.

I don't even know how to respond to your comparison. I never needed to or wanted to tell my boss my sexuality, nor does my boss care. My boss would care if I was having relations on the job though, male or female.

They couldn't hold hands and kiss anywhere before, not without taking a chance of losing their career.

You're missing my point. You couldn't have relationships OFF the job though either. Are you saying you've never mentioned your relationship at all at work? Don't have any pictures of your family up? No evidence whatsoever?
