Royal evolution: Kings’ Kopitar joins NHL elite

It was flipping gorgeous. Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar(notes) skated the puck up to his own blue line, lobbed it over the heads of a couple St. Louis Blues and put it where only teammate Simon Gagne(notes) could collect it in the offensive zone. Gagne finished the play with a goal, an exclamation point at the end of a 5-0 victory Tuesday night.

But it didn’t illustrate why Kopitar might be the most underrated player in the NHL. This wasn’t the first time he had gone deep like that – he connected with Dustin Brown(notes) similarly last season, like a QB showing off his touch and arm strength – and even East Coasters who don’t stay up late to watch West Coast games should appreciate Kopitar’s offensive skill. Any hockey fan can type his name into the search bar on YouTube. Everyone should.

What YouTube won’t show you, though, is how Kopitar has developed into an elite two-way player. Brown said Kopitar has become just as good defensively as he has been offensively and is approaching the level of the Detroit Red Wings’ Pavel Datsyuk(notes), a three-time winner of the Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward. Kings coach Terry Murray said Kopitar belongs in the same group as Datsyuk; the Vancouver Canucks’ Ryan Kesler(notes), last season’s Selke winner; and, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews(notes), last season’s Selke runner-up.

“He plays the game 200 feet,” Murray said. “I think in the last couple of years, he’s bought in totally on the checking part of the game. He’s such an intelligent reader of what’s going on without the puck. He’s the guy that I trust in all key situations – on PK, on 5-on-5 late in games. His game has really evolved.”

The ability was always there. The Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg(notes), another top two-way player, who considers Kopitar one of his personal favorites, said Kopitar showed it in Sweden before he arrived in the NHL. “I don’t think just because he came over here he got worse,” Zetterberg said.

But while Kopitar ranged between 20 to 32 goals and 61 to 77 points in his first three NHL seasons, his plus/minus rating came in at minus-12, minus-15 and minus-17. Murray emphasized defense when he arrived in 2008-09, and Kopitar said he focused on not “swinging and swooping.” He stopped anticipating the breakout and starting participating in it.

“A couple years ago, you’d go into the corner and you’d battle,” Brown said. “But now he comes into the corner, takes the puck, and he’s gone. That’s probably the biggest difference I’ve noticed in his game. It’s probably something from a fan standpoint you probably don’t notice.”

Getting the puck on his stick sooner helps Kopitar transition to offense sooner, allowing him to make plays like those deep lob passes. He was plus-6 in 2009-10, while putting up 34 goals and 81 points in 82 games. He was plus-25 last season, while putting up 25 goals and 73 points in 75 games. He is plus-5 so far this season, with four goals and nine points in five games. He ranks second in the NHL in scoring.

“It’s just a process of learning and just getting it done,” Kopitar said. “I’m proud of what I’ve become so far, but there’s still room for improvement. I’m definitely still driven.”

Now that Kopitar has come so far and the Kings have added Mike Richards(notes) – a two-time 30-goal scorer and one-time Selke runner-up – they are as strong at center as anyone in the West. They can go toe-to-toe with the Wings (Datsyuk and Zetterberg), Canucks (Henrik Sedin(notes) and Kesler), Blackhawks (Toews and Patrick Kane(notes)), San Jose Sharks (Joe Thornton(notes) and Logan Couture(notes)) and Anaheim Ducks (Ryan Getzlaf(notes) and Saku Koivu(notes)). That should make it more difficult to match up against them and, they hope, more difficult to eliminate them from the playoffs.

“We want to go deep,” Kopitar said.

He wasn’t talking about a lob pass.

The slumping Washington Capitals (http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/_/name/wsh/washington-capitals) fired head coach Bruce Boudreau on Monday, replacing him with former team captain Dale Hunter.
Boudreau paid the price for his club's downward spiral since starting the season 7-0-0, the Caps going 5-9-1 since then -- including weekend losses to New York Rangers (http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/_/name/nyr/new-york-rangers) and Buffalo Sabres (http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/_/name/buf/buffalo-sabres).
Via text message, Boudreau declined comment for now when reached by ESPN.com other than to say he's obviously had "better days."
http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2010/0501/nhl_g_boudreau1x_288.jpgJim McIsaac/Getty ImagesBruce Boudreau had adopted a stricter approach this season, and Alex Ovechkin did not respond well, slumping with 17 points in 22 games.

Capitals general manager George McPhee told ESPN.com the "performance over the past 10 days'" was the tipping point.
Under Boudreau, hired in November 2007, the Caps went from non-playoff team to perennial regular-season contender although the club failed to get over the playoff hump, losing to eighth-seeded Montreal in April 2009 in the first round of the playoffs and to Tampa in the second round last spring when the Caps again had high expectations.
Boudreau changed his ways this season, adopting a stricter approach with his players, knowing his job was on the line this year.
Franchise player Alex Ovechkin (http://espn.go.com/nhl/player/_/id/3101/alex-ovechkin) did not respond well, slumping this season with 17 points (9-8) in 22 games (54th in league scoring), and that got Boudreau on the hot seat as well.
Hunter had spent the past 11 seasons in the Ontario Hockey League as coach of the London Knights, where he was the fastest coach in league history to reach 400 wins.
The 51-year-old former NHL player will be behind the bench Tuesday night when the Caps host the St. Louis Blues (http://espn.go.com/nhl/team/_/name/stl/st-louis-blues).
Hunter played 19 seasons in the NHL with Quebec, Washington and Colorado, having his number retired by the Caps in March 2000.
In a 5-1 loss to the Sabres on Saturday, the Capitals (12-9-1) looked very much like a team that has been listless throughout a 3-7-1 stretch.
They've lost four straight on the road by a combined score of 19-4.
"We try our best and know how we have to play, but we don't play," Ovechkin said after the loss. "We make mistakes in our zone and it costs us goals and costs us games."
Pierre LeBrun covers the NHL for ESPN.com. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Quote:
After the game, the teams held a shootout just for fun. During this, according to witnesses, Milbury's son tried to pick a fight with the Blackhawk player. Coaches from both teams went on to the ice to break it up, and at this point, says a Blackhawks parent, Milbury grabbed the victim's facemask and screamed at him, asking "What did you say to my son?" Milbury allegedly lifted the kid off the ground and shook him, yelling obscenities all the while, before dropping him roughly to the ice.

Milbury was confronted by the Blackhawks' head coach, at which point he and his son left the ice. According to a grandparent of a player present, Milbury's son told one of the mothers to "**** off."

Lefty, what do you think about the Canadiens letting go of their coach?
My balls are running empty

Overall I'm really happy :D, but at the same time it's not like he was the main reason for our subpar season

The positives:

He has done a good job considering the average roster and all the injuries

The negatives:

- Some questionable decisions, lile not having some of our best offensive players in PP situations and giving PP time to shitty 4th liners because they - sigh - go in front of the net :rolleyes

- lack of emotion

- a defensive system that is not adapted to the kind of players we have; we have great skaters, some scorers, an puck moving defenceman; JM's system is fine if your roster is very defensive, I'm sure JM would do well in NJ, but It wasnt for us

- always, always blaming the young players after a loss; I guess when shitty veterans like Hal Gill :lmao turn the puck over in their own defensive zone, it's OK :pctoss

- benching good players in the 3rd period for no apparent reason

We still have Gauthier though

Crosby, Staal, Letang, Neal, Adams...Ok Bylsma, work your magic one more time.

When it rains it pours. The Penguins received some more bad news on the injury front Sunday.

Center Jordan Staal is out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury after he collided knee-on-knee with Rangers forward Mike Rupp Friday night, according to head coach Dan Bylsma.

Forward James Neal, who leads the team with 21 goals, will be out indefinitely with a broken foot. Bylsma said it will be "weeks not days."

Neal was hit by a shot late in the third period Saturday night against New Jersey.

Craig Adams stressed a previous injury during Sunday's practice. He fell awkwardly to the ice and needed assistance to the locker room. Coach Bylsma said he will be "further evaluated (Monday)."

The Pens injuries were so bad that the team at one point had $28 million dollars in player salary out of the lineup due to injuries.

The Pens are on pace for 431 man-games lost, which would eclipse the devastating 350 lost last season.

A stunned Cammalleri asked if he could keep his game jersey as a souvenir of the good times in Montreal. No problem, said Gauthier, as long as he was willing to pay for it.

When Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald asked Cammalleri about the incident this week, the sniper replied: “I can neither confirm nor deny it.” If Cammalleri had confirmed it, he would have revealed that the asking price was $1,250.

The Canadiens used to have a deal with Mei-Gray, a U.S. company that sells game-worn jerseys, but the team now handle sales through the Canadiens boutique and online. If Cammalleri still wants the jersey, it’s available for $600.
