"A computer virus has infected the cockpits of America's Predator and Reaper drones (http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/virus-hits-drone-fleet/), logging pilots' every keystroke as they remotely fly missions over Afghanistan and other warzones. The virus, first detected nearly two weeks ago by the military's Host-Based Security System, has not prevented pilots at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada from flying their missions overseas. Nor have there been any confirmed incidents of classified information being lost or sent to an outside source. But the virus has resisted multiple efforts to remove it from Creech's computers, network security specialists say. And the infection underscores the ongoing security risks in what has become the U.S. military's most important weapons system.'"

Fucking drone continues flying until it runs out of fuel and ends up in another country, all because it's resources are taxed by a real time virus scan.

Wtf... they don't have a clean software version to turn back to? God damn that pisses me off. I'm some low level base network tech, and I'm pretty sure I could at least know well enough to have those prepared.

The US Air Force severely understaffs IT depts, while simultaneously touting Cyberspace as the next great domain of warfare. It boggles the mind. When the network goes down, nothing happens on base. And yet, they constantly shortchange us on funds and manpower.

I use beaner freely meaning anyone from central or south america imho. So where'd you pick up your IT expertise in the 3rd world?

I had my first computer at 6 years old. Started programming at 8. I guess I was fortunate enough to know what I liked early on, and be able to make a living off it. I also have formal education in electronics.

Ha! I've still got 8 more years to go... I hate to throw the 12 I've invested away! Plus, I'm pretty sure that you'd be providing a good 75% of the brainpower.

There's plenty of need in medical device applications........

My brainpower would then shrink to about 5% of the company.

Of course, I would have a slight amt of knowledge about the ins/outs of the military, but I'm pretty sure there's others out there with that info. :D

Heck, we've already built a EMR at work a few years back. We're currently working on updating it to 5010 standards for Medicare. Can you believe they just now will start accepting claims trough the internet? :lol

Air Force Network Admins Found Out About Drone Virus Through News Story

"Wired's Danger Room reports that the network admins of the 24th Air Force found out about the virus infecting the drone cockpits (http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/drone-virus-kept-quiet/) at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada by reading the earlier news article (http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/10/virus-hits-drone-fleet/). Quoting: 'Not only were officials in charge kept out of the loop about an infection in America’s weapon and surveillance system of choice, but the surprise surrounding that infection highlights a flaw in the way the U.S. military secures its information infrastructure: There’s no one in the Defense Department with his hand on the network switch. In fact, there is no one switch to speak of. The four branches of the U.S. armed forces each has a dedicated unit that, in theory, is supposed to handle cyber defense for the entire service. ... In practice, it’s not that simple. Unlike most big private enterprises, the 24th doesn’t have a centralized system for managing and monitoring its networks. There’s no place at the 24th’s San Antonio headquarters where someone could see all the digital traffic hurtling through the service’s pipes.'"
