and i dont want this to turn into some stupid argument thread about android vs. iphone
i just want to know what is honestly the better phone right now, and which one would i most likely be happy with 2 years from now (aka future potential).
going by the specs, it seems the Galaxy S II has more to offer, but im not nearly as knowledgable as others here.

Despite your desires, this will turn into a trollfest.
For what it's worth, I would prefer the GSII (Or the galaxy Prime if it will be offered on your carrier). I think that both phones will be relatively future proof, I would, however give the edge to the GSII due to the better hardware.

You should go to a shop and play with both.
Hardware-wise, I'm pretty sure the GS II is a better phone, but the 4S isn't THAT far off.
Software can make all the difference though, and that's why you should go try them out yourself.

GS II is the more powerful phone, but after owning two different Android phones and an iPhone, I strongly prefer iOS to Android. To each his own, though. If you don't have experience with both types of phones, it definitely is best to head to a store and spend a good amount of time playing with them, like others here have said.

Pretty much what everyone has said in this thread. I used an iPhone for 3 years, and went to the store to play with the Galaxy S II before I bought it. The Galaxy S II is easily the best phone I've every owned and I like the form of the phone as well.
Of course, I never had a chance to use iOS 5 (tried it on my buddy's iPhone 4, not radically different) and I'm sure iPhone 4S is signification better than my 3GS. I do however prefer Android over iOS - it's all personal preference.

FWIW, I think these days you have a 30 day return period for most phones. They might charge you a restocking fee, but you can walk away from the phone and contract if you aren't sure. Obviously, make sure to find out the exact terms before you buy.
Don't be a pussy, buy them both.

I think Apple won't charge restocking within 14 days if you buy directly from them. But El Nono has the best advice overall. Even better if you happen to have friends who have both phones - play around with them and see what you like best.

don't need 30 days to decide. go to the store and play with both a good 20 minutes.
- power them off and see which powers on quicker to the point you are on google.com
- check which has faster gps locator
- which screen you like better
- weight/size
- styling
1. GS2 you fully own it and can do anything with it out of the box
2. Iphone you are renting it from Steve Jobs unless you jailbreak it

as far as I know rooting the gs2 is super easy like a 2 minute job. And no it will not install anything like that on it. it just unlocks it.
I don't think it'd be that easy with the apple especially since IOS5 is recent. Plus there are risks to briking it, updating it, etc.

I rooted my GS II because I needed to unlock it to another carrier. Yeah, it was quite easy (less than 5 minutes). My phone didn't come with too much bloatware but it's probably carrier dependent. The phone has been blazing fast so far.

I think the point was that you said that the GSII was yours but you had to jailbreak the Iphone in order to get that same level of control. Then in the next post said that rooting is easy. I think that stock, there is more control in android than stock IOS, I also think that rooted there is more control than jailbroken (I *think* because I have not used a jailbroken iphone, so I don't know if you can swap kernels, overclock, undervolt, etc), but the point is that there are restrictions to both while stock.

what I meant is that samsung out of the box already gives you tons more control than Iphone. Then if you want more, you can root it which is a trivial step really.
on the other hand, Iphone out of the box does not give you much flexibility. Only option would be to jailbreak it which is not trivial at all.

The whole jailbreak stuff is also very personal at this point in time. I can't think a whole lot of things you can do on a rooted vs non-rooted or jailbroken vs non-jailbroken device.
And then the question becomes if you personally need any of those.

Except for, you know, a rooted Android. My Evo has a custom kernel AND a custom OS on it. Can you do that on iPhone? Nooooooooope.
http://i.imgur.com/fnZtJ.png
Can you make your homescreen look like that on the iPhone? Noooooooope. You can virtually replicate iOS on Android though, with MIUI.
Personal taste aside, really, you can't go wrong with either. The 4S is a phenomenal phone and Siri is just icing on the cake, although Android does have it's own version of it that's improving day by day and already can do most of the things that Siri is capable of, although Siri is innately more flexible.
I'd boil it down, oddly enough, to screen size. Want a massive display you can watch movies on? Get an SII or the new Nexus Prime. Want a phone that's going to comfortably fit in any pants pocket and still give you good images? iPhone.
The differences are much less these days than any fanboy is going to make them out to be. Android is more customizable, iPhone is simpler to use.
Not sure, but a big deal for me is the fact that my Evo has hot-swappable batteries. That's absolutely huge. I paid $14 for 2 extra batteries and a wall charger. I can now go half a week (~80 hours) without needing to charge my phone up.
I embiggened some words so the haters don't get all uppity.

No need at the moment. My Evo still flies on Cyanogen Mod 7.1. I really see nothing that needs the dual core proc at the moment besides gaming, and I don't game on my phone AS much as I would have to to justify the upgrade.
I MIGHT switch to the Prime, but only if it comes out for Sprint. Screw the other cell phone companies and their 2GB limit. Not ever gonna pay to be capped unless there's no other option. I still love my Evo, and the screen looks almost brand new. I haven't even felt the slightest inkling of desire to get a better phone until I saw the Nexus Prime.

Despite what you'll hear from others, you can't go wrong with either. My iPhones served me well for the years I had them. A jailbroken iPhone is much better the a unjailbroken one, though.
The Galaxy S2 is clearly my favorite phone and Android does the little things I couldn't do before, which probably isn't a necessity for a lot of people. I'd try em both out but you won't be disappointed either way.

How many could you have possibly purchased? Despite having 130k fewer total apps, the android market has about 20k more free or ad supported apps. Plus the paid apps on android are not that as expensive as they are on other platforms. Did you really spend a lot on apps?

People can text your GV number, it would come through on the GV app (does apple have this??). There may be a way to have it forward the texts to your OK number, but I don't know. The biggest concern is that GV has not had the capability to process MMS's, they do now, but they are rolling it out carrier by carrier. Sprint is the first and they just rolled it out to us. You have 2 options, if someone wants to send you an MMS, you can have them send it to your email, or give them the OK number.
Also, do you really think that you are going to use 2 GB of data on a 3.5 in screen at 3g speeds?

Dolphin is the way to go. Although its not named Chrome, the stock browser is basically Chrome for your phone. Its a browser for android developed by Google. My guess on why they aren't working on making it better probably has to do with other priorities and the fact that there are several good browsing options available on the market.

That has nothing to do with this whatsoever. It has to do with their idiotic notion that since an account was started in Oklahoma City, all numbers on the account must have an Oklahoma City number. If I jumped onto another plan that was started in DFW, I would be able to keep my number no problem.

1) In regards to the phone number, maybe things have changed but back when I switched, Sprint wouldn't let me take the number. I asked. But if you notice, I said Cingular so that should tell you how long it's been (5 years since I switched when my ex was pregnant with my son).
2) I read somewhere that Android and Chrome have 2 different development teams and the Android people developed their own browser for Android, independent of Chrome. Therefore, while the Android browser may share a lot of code with Chrome, it's NOT Chrome. In fact, I found this link discussing the issue.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/05/17/google-chrome-android/
When Android first launched in October of 2008, it seemed like either a small oversight or precautionary measure that the browser bundled with it wasn’t branded as Chrome. After all, Google’s browser had just launched in beta (on Windows) the month before. Assuming people liked it, you would have assumed that Google would transfer the branding over to use in Android, right?
Well people did like Chrome. A lot. And yet, Google never moved it over. This despite the fact that Apple did just that on the iPhone with its much less successful Safari browser. Meanwhile, Opera and Mozilla’s Firefox were committed to mobile versions of their popular browsers as well. But Google stuck with “Browser” for Android.
And now they may be stuck with it for good. The problem is that Chrome, for better or worse, is now associated with another product that is similar but different from Android — again, Chrome OS. Imagine if they start including a Chrome browser on Android tablets and then next year Chrome OS tablets launch. Consumers will wonder what the hell the difference is? (And this may already prove to be an issue on the PC/Chromebook side of things, we’ll see.)
It's an interesting point, although in the next sentence the writer mentions the possiblity of Chrome tablets. I don't think that will happen. Google would be STUPID to launch two tablets with two different OS's.

yeah, the price is right, that includes shipping too. Also, you will get it fast (I got mine on a wednesday and I ordered it monday evening). He usually releases a case for a new phone, and observes reactions, if people find some design flaws he will correct them, then issue new ones (while sending free ones to the early adopters).
You can get TPU cases for cheaper (my wife got some through ebay 5 for 8.50), but the design kinda sucks (power button and volume rocker hard to press) and the TPU feels a little different (kinda sticks to your pocket a little).

OK. I've got a few bitches about my att galaxy s2, but first:
I read the skyrocket is,with the exception of LTE, a bit inferior to the S2. Bigger screen with the same resolution and a different, less talked about CPU. Take that how you want to....
Oh, and resistanze....answer your damn pm. Please :D
Now, back to my bitches......
I've had my S2 for a little over a couple of weeks. This is after me having a 3GS for little over 2 years. The S2 is a beautiful phone. The guts are far superior over the 3GS but I'm not completely wowed by it yet. As I was typing this, the simple task of typing it on my phone was frustrating so now I'm typing it in the Memo app. The cursor pops up a few characters behind the blinking/flashing line and its hard to determine were the letters will pop up. I've been dealing with that all the sudden starting about a week ago. A little frustrating. The spacebar isn't long enough in landscape mode. I'm using the android keyboard. Anyway to get rid of the "," and "." key?
This problem just started a couple of days ago: I have the pattern lock screen activated. Sometimes when I hit the power button to activate the screen to input the pattern, the pattern isn't there. I just swipe it and I get access to my phone. No protection. Doesn't happen all the time but it shouldn't.
When I scroll with the provided Web browser-- which not being called Chrome or not having the App available still doesn't make sense to me-- a lot of times the page doesn't stay where I leave it. It scrolls back to some other point in the page like there's a page break somewhere. I have to double tap it. Sometimes that works.
Then there's the battery issue. I dont unserstand how when i have my phone connected to the charger the phone still manages to die. Never had this problem with my 3GS and I'd be doing the same things on my phone while charging it.
I'll just leave it there :)
Convince me, fan boys :wakeup

You don't have LTE do you (don't think your phone is LTE )? LTE is true 4G. Your phone is referring to HSDPA+ which was formally called 3G+ but now is sometimes called 4G for marketing purposes. So you're actually on 3G.

iPhone 4S Not as Good as Androids, Says Consumer Reports
The leading US product critic, Consumer Reports takes a better look on iPhone 4S and found out that it's still not as good as its Android competitions.
In a report released Tuesday, the enhancement made to iPhone 4S scored a higher rating than the iPhone 4, but fall short to outscore the new Android based phones in the market.

OK. My 30 day "trial" on this phone is up today and I'm kinda leaning towards taking it back.
I'm still having that lock screen issue. That's just lazy coding there--wont ask for the touch code if it times out but will ask for it when I manually time it out???????
It tends to lock up if just a couple of programs/Apps are running. Hasn't totally froze up on me, yet
The 4g or whatever they label it isn't blowing my hair back. And yes I know that's more of the carrier's deal.
I'm still having that cursor issue which is so frustrating at times.
I don't like the fact that I "may" get ICS. Why aren't all android phones able to update the OS once it becomes available? Granted, that is if the hardware can handle it. My 2+ year 3GS was able to update to iOS5 the day it came out. Why do I have to root my phone for a simple update???

After having had time to use my wife's 4s, and my GS2 Skyrocket, I'm glad I chose the Skyrocket.
The only complaint I have is the battery life could be better. But basically everything I did on the 4s, I was able to do on the Skyrocket, and in a lot of cases, I could do much better on the Skyrocket.
Now I haven't rooted the Skyrocket, or played with a jailbroken 4s (my wife thinks if I jail break it, it will blow the phone up or something fucking retarded), so I still haven't gotten a chance to really utilize these devices to the extend they can be. But for stock devices, unless you are a complete electronic dimwit or an iphone fanboy, I think most people will be more pleased with the GS2. I think the TouchWizUI (which >>>>>>> sense IMO) is nearly as intuitive as iOS5, but obviously more customizable.

Your lock screen issue isn't an issue, from what I read in your earlier post. It's a setting. There is a way to set it up so that the pattern lock kicks in after a certain amount of time. You can have it kick in immediately, or after a while.
I'm wondering why you are having it lock up on you, I haven't had that issue whatsoever. That sounds like your specific phone has an issue, or maybe there is more to the story we don't know about.
If I recall, AT&T said we definitely will get ICS.

as I mentioned in a separate thread, I got my wife an iphone 4 and myself an xperia pro in the last couple days. having played around a bit with both, I would say-
-I immediately hated that the iphone forced me to install itunes on my pc to startup, and that itunes launched 5+ processes including 2 that automatically start in the background.
-the iphone has a really nice screen, great build quality, and a simple smoothness to it, cant take that away from it
-i understand the idea behind having only one button, but I find that browsing the web on my xperia pro is a lot easier. and, even if flash has a limited future right now there are a lot of sites the iphone cant handle that android can (I went to the same 3 sites on each phone and the iphone is littered with "download flash" banners.)
-battery wise i'm not seeing much difference, if anything the xperia pro is better because i'm using it a lot more intensively than she is her iphone
I guess I'll have to really get into the apps, roms, jailbreaking etc to have a more definitive point of view but right now it would be hard for me to justify spending multiples more on an iphone just for a great screen and a smoother UI (which can probably be tweaked on the android). The android phone has perks of its own, namely a qwerty. I think I would probably hate it otherwise :lol

If you are not techie-inclined, but still want the advantages that android has, then just buy from the Nexus line, you will always (hardware permitting) have the latest android software (kinda like viva was saying about apple phones).
In addition to that, you have the choice to (for whatever reason) purchase other phones with different hardware configurations.

Nah the Nexus line gets the new updates OTA pretty damn fast since its always just stock Android.
The main problem with Android implementation is the way the individual manufactures do it and the carriers. No one can argue that the walled garden of Apple isn't usually a better out of the box experience (or they can but its stupid) but I do think Android has the higher ceiling of the two. Getting to that ceiling requires more work, however. It also means buying the right phone which can be a problem if you want a phone when its released.
Also, not all android handsets are created equal where as all iphones of a generation are.

im not going to say Android is more stable than iOS, but on many android phones, its every bit as stable these days.
older android phones definitely had stability issues, but they have pretty much overcome that. between the time i have had using my phone and my wifes 4s, ive had just as many force closes on each phone, which is very very few (maybe 3-4 on each device, if that). I would probably still give the stability nod to iOS, slightly, but at the same time, if you left an android phone as simple and uncustomized as an iPhone, it would be just as stable.

The T-Mobile uses the 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon dual core while the AT&T uses the Exynos 1.2 Ghz doal core found in the international version, I believe. Benchmarks show the Exynos to be a bit faster, but I doubt it's that noticable in real-world use.

Hmm, ok. Posting bad information and then getting informed responses is trolling now. The bar has been set incredibly low.
Bad info ?
Not so sure .....................

The game has 18 levels already. 17 x 50 paid levels + 30 on the free version. It's great for stoned and bored people tbqh. Seems they release new stages every month and their stage naming convention is weird.
Not for those who hate in-app purchases though. You will have to make a lot in this game.

Actually, I never agreed with Apple on those commercials (and I had an iBook at the time as well as a PC). You see, when you're the king, people go after you, targeting you. Think Microsoft, Budweiser or even Coke. Apple, made those commercials, Miller Lite is always saying that their beer has more taste than Bud (and then in the fine print it says that it doesn't reflect what people like, just that they thought it had more taste, good or bad), and even Pepsi has those Santa on vacation commercials aimed at Coke.
One of the perks (or bad things) about being #1 is everyone is after you.
Now, having said, and looking at the numbers, it appears that Apple is the top dog in manufacturing (not in OS as that's Android) with Samsung coming in second. So I'm assuming that that's probably one of the reasons for Samsung's commercial. If that's the case, it's a clear cut winner for Apple as it establishes who's the leader and who's the challenger. As Ric Flair would say, to be the man, you have to beat the man. By Samsung making these commercials, they've just said that Apple is the man.
But, I also suspect that Samsung is more than just a little angry with the whole court proceedings going on in Europe and how Apple is getting their products banned. That is probably just as much of a reason for the commercials.

I don't think it matters either way, tbh. This commercial (nor any commercial that Samsung decided to make) won't really cause a shift in the market share of smartphones. I think people might be reading into these types of commercials too much.
Everyone knows the iPhone is a highest selling phone; everyone knows people line up for iPhones. This commmercial didn't uncover any dirty little secrets that will change anything with regard to sales. Samsung isn't going to take over the iPhone anytime soon with regards to sales, and commericals won't change that. People who want Galaxy S2 will buy it, and people who want iPhones will buy iPhones.
Considering the Galaxy sold 10 million phones before even being released on this of the Atlantic, they're not doing too bad themselves. If anything, this commercial might make some of the neutrals chuckle and maybe inquire a bit more.
