BEIJING, China — Factories in China’s manufacturing heartland are feeling the squeeze again, with minimum wages in Guangdong province set to rise by as much as 20 percent on Jan. 1 for the second time in less than a year.

And while one Chinese province’s minimum wage might seem like a local issue, the salary question underlines a continuing momentum in China toward building higher-end business and better jobs.

In other words, the days of endless, cheap Chinese labor are limited. What that means for consumers in the United States and elsewhere is simple: Things are going to cost more, soon.

double inflation and costs of living increasing, hence on their shitty salary they can not buy into the new china economy....sucks to be them, but that shit happens everywhere in 3rd world countries with cheap labour, where the proceeds of wealth trickling down to the people is a fraction what was total to be spread down while every corrupt official and his dog gets their cut first....

Hogwash. I live in SE Asia, which is in stiff competition with cheap Chinese labor. The salary ranges here are so dismal, I can't imagine what it's like in China. Chinese Labor is going to be undercutting the market for a long time to come.

Yeah, a 20% raise on a shit salary to begin with is still cheap.

Yeah, but at some point, I would think the transportation cost + the increased cost of labor might shift some of these jobs elsewhere. Ideally back to the U.S. Especially if natural gas prices stay low.

Meh, there is always India, not to mention that forgotten continent just south of Europe.

India maybe, but there's just too much political instability in Africa for them to become a threat to Asian manufacturing any time in the forseeable future.

I thought that India overtook China as low cost manufacturing king sometime in the middle of last year.

Notice that US solar importers don't want the Feds going after the Chinese for dumping solar panels on US market and killing US mfrs/jobs.

As always, unregulated profit-chasing (globalism) is not patriotic, is completely sociopathic and destructive.

Not saying you're wrong, but that would be news to me. I hadn't heard that.

On a somewhat related note:
China bubble thread

A LOT of people are betting on the Chinese economy to continue a breakneck expansion indefinitely. That is unsustainable for a lot of complex reasons.

Just as a lot of people bet that their homes/houses would always go UP in value and got caught in a nasty pinch when that assumption didn't pan out, so will the people who bet on an endless supply of Chinese labor.

pollution is a world issue imho. the growth rate of chinks population is actually lower than the world's average while the population of chinks immigrants is growing fast in the US therefore over-population will be a problem to both countries.

im fine with latinos & whites tbh

i call em blacks "n!ggas" as endearment appellations, n!ggas are friends to us.

however you can never make friends with chinks cos they all have evil spirits in their brains, they wish harm to all other people and they want us all to burn in hell. they're indeed killing our economy and stealing our technologies to better their own country off, you must be a retard if you think otherwise

Huge employer in China makes big step toward robot

When the world’s largest maker and assembler of electronic components and products announced plans in August to replace Chinese workers with robots, some robot executives called it a ploy to keep their workers in line. The company didn’t want to build robots, they said, it wanted to control its workers, who had complained of tough working conditions and had a spate of suicides.

But earlier this month, officials from Hon Hai Precision Industry and its subsidiary, Foxconn, took the next step, signaling a potential sea change in the electronics industry. They broke ground for new robotics R&D and manufacturing facilities in a new industrial park in Taichung, central Taiwan. Foxconn, which made its name by using cheap mainland Chinese labor to supply the likes of Apple, HP, Sony, Dell and Nokia, says it will replace 500,000 workers with robots in the next three to five years.

The plan is so sweeping that its implementation would have huge implications for China and the robotics industry worldwide. It signals that Chinese labor may no longer have the low-cost advantage it once enjoyed and that the robotics industry is ripe for change.
