View Full Version : Pacquiao promoter Arum does not want Pac-Man/Mayweather fight

Dude said he didn't get an email and didn't know they were even interested in a fight...come the fuck on...at first I was unsure who was backing out...now I'm starting to think it's Manny's crew.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. aide: No megafight

By Dan Rafael
ESPN.com

The latest round of negotiations for the potential megafight between welterweight champions Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are over before they have even begun.

Leonard Ellerbe, one of Mayweather's advisors, and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer both told ESPN.com Monday that they were notified that Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank was not interested in coming to the table.

"We have been informed that Bob Arum is not interested in pursuing a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao at this time," Schaefer said.

Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz in his return to the ring after 16 months off in September, and Pacquiao eked out a controversial majority decision against rival Juan Manuel Marquez in their third meeting Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

That set the table for the showdown that looms as the biggest money fight in boxing history, especially with Mayweather announcing two weeks ago that he planned to return May 5 at the MGM Grand and, according to Ellerbe, wanted to "make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella (Pacquiao)."

However, that does not appear to be the plan Arum and Pacquiao have, even if they had said they were open to it before the Marquez fight.

Schaefer said the notification came in an email from retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, the mediator who has worked closely with the sides to settle numerous lawsuits and issues in recent years.

"I am sick and tired of Bob Arum twisting the truth. It's another case of 'yesterday I was lying, today I'm telling the truth,' " Schaefer said, invoking Arum's most famous quote. "The truth of the matter is that we received this afternoon an email from retired federal judge Daniel Weinstein, who has informed us that Top Rank is pursuing a rematch with Marquez and, therefore, is not interested in immediate talks for a possible Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. This is obviously as clear as it can be that they have no intentions of making a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Therefore, Floyd Mayweather will have no other choice than to move on and identify and lock in another opponent for his ring return on May 5."

Schaefer said the plan was to use Weinstein to help them make the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight because he is trusted by both sides and intimately familiar with the problems between the rival promotional companies.

"Judge Weinstein is respected by both parties and mediated issues between Top Rank and Golden Boy before, so the plan was to see if he could help facilitate such a fight. Floyd's team really wanted to get this fight done," Schaefer said. "If you just sit down with Arum, he can at any time have one of his fits, one of his 'f--- you' attacks, and the likelihood that he would have a 'f--- you' attack in front of a retired judge seemed less likely than if Arum and me would be alone in a room."

Arum told ESPN.com that he knew nothing about an email and claimed that nobody from his company had communicated anything about making -- or not making -- a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.

But Arum did say, "We are pursuing a fourth fight with Marquez. As far as doing anything definitively, we aren't ready to do anything definitively. When we are ready to make a determination of what we are going to do, we will do it. We are not going to do this in the press. We will do what is in the best interest of ourselves and our client and make a decision when it's time to. If we decide we want to do a rematch with Marquez, there is no reason to sit down with Mayweather. If we want to explore a Mayweather fight, we will sit down with them. But I'm not going to sit down with them just because it's a good show."

Ellerbe was just as upset as Schaefer was.

"In my opinion, you have three cowards -- Bob Arum, (Pacquiao trainer) Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao," Ellerbe told ESPN.com. "Now we all know the truth once and for all why this fight hasn't been made. It should be clear to everyone that they don't care what the fans want, especially when Floyd is ready, willing and able to fight Manny Pacquiao now. Floyd said if this isn't clear, he doesn't know what is.

"All along we know why the fight isn't being made. This is the perfect opportunity. Both guys just fought. This is the fight the fans want to see, and it's a disgrace that they are not willing to give the fans what they want. In my opinion, there are three reasons why Arum doesn't want the fight. He knows there is no way that Manny Pacquiao can win, it kills his cash cow, and he wants to do in-house fights where he controls both sides. I said all along why this fight hasn't been made to this point. Manny Pacquiao knows, Bob Arum knows and Freddie Roach knows."

Ellerbe said he and Schaefer would begin exploring potential May 5 opponents for Mayweather.

"We have a number of options, and we will evaluate that and give the fans the biggest fight we can give them," he said. "But before we can get started (on a Pacquiao fight), Top Rank doesn't even want to listen. They're not even interested in Floyd Mayweather. They want no part of Floyd Mayweather. They have no interest in the little fella fighting Floyd. Manny Pacquiao needs to stand up, in my opinion, and tell his promoter that he wants to fight Floyd Mayweather next and stop hiding behind his promoter."

Ellerbe said Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) did not watch as Pacquiao (54-3-2, 38 KOs) turned in a shaky performance on Saturday night because he was making a paid appearance at a nightclub in Virginia. Mayweather came out of a 21-month retirement in September 2009 and fought Marquez, dropping him in the second round and winning a near-shutout decision, a far more dominating performance than Pacquiao has had against him in any of their three bouts.

This isn't about Pac-Man..this is about his crew. I don't think Pacquiao has a problem fighting Mayweather...as a boxer, you have to have an ego..one that leads you to believe you can beat anybody..but I believe his crew doesn't think he can win.

Yeah, but all this time it has been Roach and Arum who convinced the media and fans that PBF was ducking Manny, while all along Arum never wanted Manny to fight Floyd. Why, its simple. Arum makes more money if her had Manny fight other fighters under the Top Rank Banner. If hes promoting both fighters then its all in house for him. Shane, Cotto, Margarito... these guys all allowed Arum to get paid on both ends. If Manny fights Floyd, her takes less money for the first time in a long time. It sucks, but its the nature of the boxing business. This is why fight fans prefer to watch less talented MMgay fighters.

Floyd is an easy guy to hate, so I can see why he gets bashed by the media and fans. But the claims of him being afraid is absurd. That fight will happen some day, but Floyd and Arum are going to have to agree to split the pie fairly. Both fighters have nowhere else to go but down. Manny a fourth fight with JM, and Floyd a rematch with Ortiz. Floyd aint getting a 65/35 split. Manny is just as big a draw. I think 55/45 with the winner taking the lions share is fair. Manny is on record saying hed do a winner take all. Of course, Arum wont agree to that. Imagine the hype behind that promotion.

What about Martinez, Khan?

TheMACHINE
11-15-2011, 02:18 PM
holy shit..floyd fights like once a year with plenty of people to fight against in the past 5 years. He fights the likes of Otriz, Marquez, Hatton, Mosely and DLH and you guys are all like "see, i told you he was ducking". Give me a fucking break. I dont like what Arum is doing this time around, but dont try to convince us that you Floyd doesnt duck people when his fucking resume says it all.

TheNextGen

Who did he duck? Mosley refused to fight Floyd from 2000-2006. Why, because he was promoted by Arum. It was Oscar that basically forced Shane to fight Floyd under the Golden Boy banner. Cotto? He's another fighter thats basically owned by Arum. Margarito is also another fighter owned by Arum. Do your homework on this. I think it was like three years ago after Manny destroyed Oscar, Floyd was trying to get a fight with Manny. Arum refused to make a deal because he believes that it was Oscar and Schafer that leaked the rumors about Manny using drugs. Arum is on record claiming he didnt want to do business with those "bums." So Floyd flies down to Miami to see if he can get Don King to co-promote a fight between him and Manny. Arum said he would welcome that idea but instead he allowed Manny to fight Margarito and Cotto, then Mosely. And Mosely had to leave Goldenboy just to make that fight happen. Meanwhile, hes in the media calling Floyd a chicken, and hes ducking Manny. If Floyd went to Arum and allowed him to promote the fight for both he and Manny, the fight would happen. This is the only hold up. The fighters arent afraid of each other. They want to fight, but Arum is a scumbag and using the media to play games.

Just curious. Why are you such a Floyd fan?

Its obvious that Mayweather was ducking pacquiao and when pac was demolishing fighters.

and based on this article, it's gonna be pacquaio ducking mayweather from this point on, based on his recent performances.

Khan is under the Top Rank Banner. No way Arum gives him that fight over Manny. Khan is still working his way up through the ranks. No need to rush him. The Martinez fight would draw money but it would be a boring fight to watch. Martinez is a Roy Jones carbon copy and they would both waste the night trying to pot shot each other. Martinez should try and revenge that loss he had with Margarito after Margarito beats Cotto again. Martinez started his career late and is already 35. He still looks great for his age though. His last fight was at 160, he should move up to 168 and go after guys like Ward, Direll, and Froch.

I agree the fight might be boring because of their styles but name wise Martinez is the biggest fight Floyd can make after Pacquiao, besides a victory over Martinez would do wonders to Floyd's resume.

Martinez is too small to go 168, in fact I'd say he's more of a 154er than a middleweight, and given than the bigger names are at 154 (or lower) I think it should be a no brainer for him to go down instead of up.

In the last half decade Pacman has been immensely better than Fairweather. He's not only fought more than double the fighters, he has gone up in weight at least 3 times. :wow

Let's take a look:
Pacman:
2011 Shane Mosley - UD
2010 Antonio Margarito - UD
2010 Joshua Clottey - UD
2009 Miguel Ángel Cotto - KO 12
2009 Ricky Hatton - KO 2
2008 Oscar De La Hoya - KO 8
2008 David Díaz - KO 9
2008 Juan Manuel Márquez - SD
2007 Marco Antonio Barrera - UD
2007 Jorge Solís - KO 8
2006 Érik Morales - KO 3
2006 Óscar Larios - UD
2006 Érik Morales - KO 10

Fairweather:
2010 Mosley - UD
2009 Marquez - UD
2007 Hatton - KO
2007 De La Hoya - SD
2006 Baldomir - UD
2006 Judah - UD

not only has Pacman fought and beat the best fighters of the time. He has not dodged anyone.

I don't count the last fight for either fighter cause IMO both fighters are reaching washed up status.

Are you posting that for me? I'm not a Floyd fan. Pretty sure everyone is well aware of who won fighter of the decade. What is your point? Are you diminishing everyone else's career that was in the running and didn't win? I see some ATG's on that list..

Mayweather became the top dog of the welterweight division after he beat Oscar. No one has beat him since, or before. Manny moved up and he and Arum chose to fight everyone except the best fighter in the world. Whether they fight today or six years ago, Money has always been ten times better than JM. Manny can barely beat JM, Floyd dominated him.

this would make sense if Manny didnt fight DLH, and Mosley too IN ADDITION to Cotto, Clottey and Margarito.

So Floyd DOMINATED Marquez in a decision. Can we also say that Manny DOMINATED De La Hoya in which Floyd got a Split Decision? Can we say that Manny dominated Hatton in two rounds?

Im not saying Mayweather sucks...but to say he's still on top cuz he fought Ortiz, Marquez, Mosley, Hatton and DLH in the past 4 year does not make any sense.

Lets be honest. Cotto, Clottey and Margarito are all bums. Average fighters. Manny came along and beat up guys that Floyd already beat. If he wants to be, them best, he needs to beat the best.

see heres what i dont get. Mayweather fans acts like Mayweather does NOT need to fight anyone to prove he is great.

"they're all bums..Mayweather WOULD fuck them up."

Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda...fuck IF's and just fight them and PROVE it.

First off, you better stick to the Naruto forums and your garden and stay away from boxing discussions as much as possible. Floyd defeated JMM because he was simply the better counterpuncher and boxer. JMM is a classic counterpuncher, but if he was up against Floyd who's an excellent counterpuncher and defensive fighter.

People also forget that JMM trained the wrong way when he fought Floyd. He focused too much on gaining weight without working on his strength. IMHO, the reason why JMM is so competitive this time around against Manny is because he made himself bigger and stronger for this fight. In short, he learned from his mistakes against Floyd really well.

Also, noob boxing wannabes forget the fact that JMM has been with Manny for 24 fucking rounds. Both Manny and JMM simply know what the other guy is going to do because of the number of times they faced each other.

the Mayweather>Marquez>Manny analogy has long been debunked by Frazier, Ali, and Foreman.

Again, stick to the Naruto and Pakistani forums. Last I checked, PBF got a split decision win over DLH while Manny made him quit.

Also, I'd like PBF to take a stab at Cotto and Margarito. Even before Manny's meteoric rise in boxing, PBF has always ducked both Margarito and Cotto.

Six years ago, Manny was fighting at the 130 lbs. while PBF is already a full-blown welterweight. What I don't understand is why PBF is ducking a fighter who spent the first 13 years of his career in the 106-130 lb division.

PBF should have all the physical advantages against Manny, but what I'm seeing here is that he's just waiting for Manny to decline just a little bit before taking a fight.

:lol:lol Floyd doesn't dominate opponents, he picks them apart. However, as good as Floyd is, he has never faced a fighter as quick, as strong, and as talented as Manny.

Ok, given that Floyd will be able to figure out Manny after two rounds, what would he do when his untested chin gets tagged by one of Manny's punches in the first two rounds? If Floyd got wobbled by an aging and no-so-quick Mosley, what do you think Manny would do to him?

Is Floyd quick enough to defend himself when Manny starts unleashing his bombs? Floyd will probably escape with a split-decision victory if Manny doesn't hurt him first.

Because he's a counterpuncher and a technician.
They may both have the same speed but Manny has the greater punching power.
Technical boxing wont deminish but speed and power will decline.

after 30 a human body loses mass, power and speed at an alarming level. Those are Manny's best traits.

that is why both look vulnerable right now.

IMO a vulnerable Pacman could lose to a vulnerable Mayweather. Because Mayweather is so good at staying away and running in the ring, and still getting points.

an old Manny would have to chase that guy around. Not good news for Manny.

That is why probably is best this fight does not take place anymore.

Had this fight taken place 2-3 years ago, Manny woudl have anihilated that poor Mayweather.

IMO the best thing for Manny is to have a clear safe exit strategy. He already proven everything. He already proven he is best fighter in the last 10+ years.

I'd recommend 2 fights next year. Some generic mexican to get back to basics and then Marquez 4 to finish off his illustrious career. :tu

Manny at his current state of mind and seeing how lousy he fought JMM will lose to mayweather and me as a Manny homer, my mind wants to delay the so he can get the distractions outta the way first. But, my heart wants the fight to happen now because one of these fighters are ready to call it a career.
We dont want to be robbed of a once in a generation fight between the best defense vs the best offense.

New p4p rankings:

#1 Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Hits: Even after 16 months out of the ring following his near shutout of Shane Mosley in May 2010, Mayweather returned to action on Sept. 17 and showed not the slightest bit of rust. Still fast and possessing great defense and underrated power, Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz (albeit in controversial fashion) in the fourth round to reclaim one of the titles he had previously given up. Now, instead of disappearing on another long layoff, Mayweather has announced plans to return on May 5, ideally against Manny Pacquiao -- if Pacquiao's people will come to the bargaining table.

Misses: It's great that Mayweather seems to be showing real interest in finally facing Pacquiao, but since Pacquiao just fought, how about giving him a little bit of time to unwind before insisting on a negotiation right now? Where was that kind of urgency at any point in the past few years?

#2 Manny Pacquiao

Hits: Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, who had already produced two memorable battles in featherweight and junior lightweight title bouts, met for the third time Nov. 12 and gave fight fans a worthy trilogy with another outstanding and highly competitive fight. With Pacquiao's victory, the path is wide open for him to at long last meet Mayweather in the fight the world wants to see.

Misses: Pacquiao, who was a massive favorite to beat Marquez because they were fighting at welterweight, looked as vulnerable as he has in a long time. Although he eked out a majority decision, few would have quarreled had Marquez gotten the win or had the fight been ruled a draw. Pacquiao looked confused at times and lacked snap on his punches in a less-than-stellar outing. It just wasn't the kind of performance we have come to expect from Pacquiao, especially in light of the fact that Marquez had been wiped out by Mayweather in 2009 in his only other welterweight fight. Although a fourth fight with Marquez is certainly warranted at some point, it absolutely should not be next, which is what Top Rank's Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, is talking about pursuing. Mayweather should be next, and it's going to have to be up to Pacquiao to stand up to Arum and tell him to make a deal. Period.
