One Day After Attending Private Economic Crisis Briefing, GOP Financial Services Chairman Bet On Stocks Tanking
CBS News’ 60 Minutes aired a report last night alleging that several members of Congress have traded stock using information they received during private briefings or meetings, enabling them to profit from inside information. By far the most damning story was about House Financial Services Chairman Spencer Bachus (R-AL), who in 2008, the day after receiving a private briefing from the nation’s chief economic officials on the extent of the financial crisis, proceeded to bet that the stock market would tank:
While Congressman Bachus was publicly trying to keep the economy from cratering, he was privately betting that it would, buying option funds that would go up in value if the market went down. He would make a variety of trades and profited at a time when most Americans were losing their shirts.

That's how the plutocracy rolls. Corrupted, and not even bothering with appearances of propriety.

Clement’s law firm, Bancroft PLLC, was one of almost two dozen firms that helped sponsor the annual dinner of the Federalist Society

Blue team hyperventilating. Thomas and Scalia attending a Federalist Society dinner sponsored by dozens of law firms does not create any substantial appearance of impropriety.

The headline reads as if Justices Scalia and Thomas were spotted surreptitiously having dinner with Paul Clement (or others who are key players in the healthcare litigation). Clearly not true.
The notion that judges should be cloistered and ethically prohibited from having any social interaction with the bar -- particularly with the lawyers who practice before them -- is rather absurd. There are clearly ethical boundaries, but being a judge does not require one to forfeit the ability to socialize with lawyers.

The brazen plutocracy doesn't even bother anymore to hide themselves, doesn't bother anymore to show even a pretense of being fair, honest, unbiased, unbought.
Shit like this from Scalia, Thomas, who also attend VRWC meetings held by Kock Bros shows they know they are completely untouchable.
Any one of us who fails to report $600K income (Thomas) or $35K (Geithner) would be thoroughly fucked by the IRS.

Just the messenger here, but I thought about posting this exactly because of the inflammatory header (which I didn't write, obviously).
I find it not surprising that only a few seemingly read the article.

Apparently, SCOTUS judges are more pure than lower judges, and don't have any ethical rules applied to them.

If a college player can't eat dinner with Deion Sanders because of his ties to sports agents, then why can the Supreme Court eat dinner with challengers of a law they are going to make a ruling on? It doesn't seem right or just.
And now....I'll read the article!

Would you attempt to tempt a Justice?
They are expected to be above all that. If you barred them form any event they may rule on, then they would have to live in seclusion.
Somewhere in this thread was an explanation anyway.

The Justices didn't break any standing laws, nor would they have since we are to assume they are too pure to be tempted. Nothing to see here, ethics activists! Go scream somewhere else.

Didn't the article also say all nine justices were at the event?

I think people who think this is a slam dunk because the court is right leaning and Obama pushed for the law don't understand how much money Big Pharma and the health care industry stand to make from mandatory insurance.
