Why Is China Building These Gigantic Structures
In the Middle of the Desert?

This is crazy. New photos have appeared in Google Maps showing unidentified titanic structures in the middle of the Chinese desert. The first one is an intricate network of what appears to be huge metallic stripes. Is this a military experiment?

Update 2: readers are finding even more weird stuff.

They seem to be wide lines drawn with some white material. Or maybe the dust have been dug by machinery.

It's located in Dunhuang, Jiuquan, Gansu, north of the Shule River, which crosses the Tibetan Plateau to the west into the Kumtag Desert. It covers an area approximately one mile long by more than 3,000 feet wide.

The tracks are perfectly executed, and they seem to be designed to be seen from orbit.

Perhaps it's some kind of targeting or calibrating grid for Chinese spy satellites? Maybe it's a QR code for aliens? Nobody really knows.

You can check it out yourself in Google Maps here : http://maps.google.com/maps?q=40.452...h&vpsrc=6&z=17 (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=40.452107,93.742118&hl=de&ll=40.447764,93.744299&spn=0.005201,0.010107&num=1&t=h&vpsrc=6&z=17)

The second structure seems to be some kind of giant targeting grid, also north of the Shule river.

If you zoom in, you can see vehicles destroyed. It's west of what seems to be a fairly big electrical station or a radio station similar to HAARP, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program located near Gakona, Alaska, and funded by the US Air Force, the US Navy, the University of Alaska, and DARPA. (calling all conspiracy nuts, calling all conspiracy nuts...)

You can investigate here and tell us what you think in the comments.

The third one I don't know what the hell it is either, and it's perhaps the craziest of them all: Thousand of lines intersecting in a titanic grid that is about 18 miles long. Another targeting grid? A big practical joke? You can inspect it here:

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/1126/mediumw.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/5/mediumw.png/)

This one seems like another target, this time arranged radially, with planes and obstacles.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/2882/targetp.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/targetp.png/)

Here is a weird airport-like structure. Except it's bright cyan. Seems full of water or made of a weird material. And look at the other airport-like structure next to it. Perhaps a decoy?

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3933/airport.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/716/airport.png/)

This is a huge complex, ten by five miles at least. Are these huge precipitation pools of some kind? If you zoom in Google Maps (see the image below this one), you could see two cooling towers like those used in nuclear plants, as well as several water treatment plants.
The Chinese have been building huge structures in the desert for a long time. Back in 2006, they built this 1:20 scale model of disputed border region between China and India. That's a terrain model 0.7 kilometer wide by almost 1 kilometer tall. Uncanny. Why would they build such a model of a terrain? To play a 1:20 scale war with 1:20 scale tanks? Mind boggling.

Somebody Ordered Tons of Satellite Photographs of China’s Mysterious Structures

There are lots of explanations for the gigantic structures built in China's desert. But the most mysterious thing is invisible: according to a former CIA analyst, there's someone who has ordered tons of satellite photos of this area since 2004.

And the plot thickens.

Allen Thomson, an analyst who used to work for the agency in the field of reconnaissance satellites, has noticed that "starting in 2004, somebody has ordered many, many satellite pictures of it."

You can see the extreme density of these requests if you turn on the DigitalGlobe layer in Google Earth—the satellite has received commands to photograph this area many hundreds of times. Compare that crazy grid of squares to the few images taken of its surroundings.

I doubt these orders come from the US military, since they have their own spy satellites—more accurate than Google's. Perhaps it's some low level agency not connected to the military. Or another country. Or Magneto. Whoever it is, Thomson points out to Wired's Danger Room that it "can't have been cheap."

That one crazy pattern looks like some mining survey stuff, I've seen similar somewhere, can't recall where though.

The round one looks like measuring impact of a blast radius or it's for some targeting system.

Some of those other things look like cooling ponds for mining or maybe power systems.

The runways look like runways.

Mysterious Symbols in China Desert Are Spy Satellite Targets, Expert Says
http://news.yahoo.com/mysterious-symbols-china-desert-spy-satellite-targets-expert-132005935.html

It turns out that they are almost definitely used to calibrate China's spy satellites.

So says Jonathon Hill, a research technician and mission planner at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, which operates many of the cameras used during NASA's Mars missions.

...

Satellite cameras focus on the grids, which measure approximately 0.65 miles wide by 1.15 miles long, and use them to orient themselves in space.

...

The calibration targets are larger than might have been expected, he said, suggesting that the satellite cameras they are being used to calibrate have surprisingly poor ground resolution.

Another strange image taken not far away shows a Stonehenge-like arrangement of objects radiating outward, with fighter jets parked at its center. "This is almost certainly a calibration/test target for orbital radar instruments," Hill said. "Since a significant amount of radar return is due to differences in surface roughness, they're probably testing ways of making the areas around planes 'bumpy' enough that the planes are partially masked."

Not really anything really all that wierd. We know the Chinese have spy satellites, so it is not surprising that they would have to have them calibrated from time to time.

This is a small part of a military facility. The other parts of the base, including the airstrip seem to fit well.

I hope no one is shocked that the Chinese have military bases or conduct military research, heh.

LOL...

I looked at those other photos, and could only figure out what one of them was for certain. Just because we don't know what something is, doesn't mean we should hyperventilate over it like the OP does.

Love your example. Great job.

Who is hyperventilating? I just posted an article I found interesting. Hell, I didn't even read the entire article.

The Great Wall of China was built for military purposes so.........maybe a thousand years ago one should have maybe hyperventilating about. I'm just saying.

I tried to pull up Google Earth from a thousand years ago. I don't get anything, so obviously the wall wasn't built then.

You know chinks don't go to ITT. They go to Calpoly Tech and UC Berkely.
