right-wing strategy to criminalize all legitimate dissent matches their attempt to criminalize the poor.

Darrin is a shill, or at best a dupe, for the corrupt 1% establishment.

Why have you left out the violent mayhem by the militarized police on unarmed, peaceful dissenters?

The Tea Party is a PR movement.

No. What happened to Rosa Parks when she refused to move? I'll give you a hint: It has a lot in common with what has happend to a lot of people in the occupy protests.

Being arrested is one of the things that happens in many non violent civil disobedience movments and acting like arrests somehow signify that a movement is unreasonable or inappropriate is some foolish ignorance. There's a reason its called civil disobedience.

Lol. Someone squatting on public property is not the same as someone being told told to give up her seat because of the color of her skin. That is a far stretch even for tunnel visioned progressives!

I don't think I ever said they were exactly the same, but they definitely are both forms of civil disobedience. You look back now with 40+ years of history so of course what you see now is framed in today's light but that doesn't change the fact that what you consider common sense today was illegal then. That alone should provide you with perspective.

More importantly, what Darrin was doing was dismissing the protests based on arrests and not anything about the protests themselves. If the standard to judge a movement by is whether or not they are arrested, then the Rosa Parks is indeed the same as those who were arrested in this movement seeing as they were both arrested. Its not my criteria and if you have a problem with it take it up with Darrin.

spursncowboys
11-17-2011, 05:37 PM
I don't know what Darrin's reasons for posting this. I'm not going to assume. I find these arrest pretty bad but that isn't a dismissal of the "protest". Anybody not having a team to root for would definitely include it in their analysis. 40 years from now, I doubt anybody will remember this. I especially doubt anyone will think of some life altering event like the beginning of the civil rights movement.
My problem is with your demeaning of what Rosa Parks did by putting them in with these clowns. That isl like trying to bunch in homosexuals' lifestyle being normalized with woman and negros not being treated like second class citizens.

The civil rights movement legislation, Medicare, Medicaid, Voting Rights Act, desegregation, etc, etc, in the 1960s were only passed with significant bipartisan support.

bipartisan support now has been completely precluded, oblitereated since the Gingrich Repugs and VRWC hate media began polarizing and dividing the country seriously with wedge issues in the early 1990s.

I also think that it comes down to an indictment of the two party system. As much as people like dan and darrin try to make them into democrats its pretty obvious that they are a bunch of people that do not feel represented by either choice.

Whats the avenue to change that? Constitutional amendment? I cannot think of much else seeing how SCOTUS made it clear that congress cannot legislate to curb corporate campaign finance on interpretations of the first and fourteenth amendments. Our single member districts force the situation into a one on one circumstance and those tow are so entrenched in so many ways.

It just saddens me that it looks like things are going to have to get worse for people to fully understand the type of changes this country desperately needs.

The end game is much more in-depth than that...

We don't need change! We just need republicans in office! They'll fix everything by giving the banks and wall street all the money and then things will naturally trickle down!

Without any provocation whatsoever, other than the bodies of these students sitting where they were on the ground, with their arms linked, police pepper-sprayed students. Students remained on the ground, now writhing in pain, with their arms linked.

What happened next?

Police used batons to try to push the students apart. Those they could separate, they arrested, kneeling on their bodies and pushing their heads into the ground. Those they could not separate, they pepper-sprayed directly in the face, holding these students as they did so. When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats. Several of these students were hospitalized. Others are seriously injured. One of them, forty-five minutes after being pepper-sprayed down his throat, was still coughing up blood.

However, we also have a responsibility to our entire campus community, including the parents who have entrusted their students to us, to ensure that all can live, learn and work in a safe, secure environment without disruption. We take this responsibility seriously. We are accountable for what occurs on our campus. Campus policies generously support free speech, but do include limited time, place and manner regulations to protect health, safety and the ability of students, staff, and faculty to accomplish the University mission. If an unfortunate incident occurs as a result of violations of these limited regulations, we are all responsible.

We are aware that many of those involved in the recent demonstrations on campus are not members of the UC Davis community. This requires us to be even more vigilant about the safety of our students, faculty and staff. While we have appreciated the peaceful and respectful tone of the demonstrations to date, the current encampment raises serious health, safety and legal concerns, and the resources we require to supervise this encampment cannot be sustained, especially in these very tight economic times. Our resources must support our core mission to educate all of our students.

Yeah, you really seemed to be worried about safety and healthy when you looked on as police pepper sprayed the fuck out of peaceful protesters.

This is true, and when they have probably hundreds of people with cell phone video cameras trying to catch a view that they can spin, they have to be extra careful. I think the fact that there are so few instances shown, is testimony that they are doing rather well.

I have to wonder, how much footage these people take that they delete, because it shows the protesters initiating the violence.

In that case, every single member of the tea party movement who protested in DC should have been arrested. They completely DESTROYED the commute that day. I couldn't even get downtown because of how crushed the metro was, to say nothing of the fact that I tried to go to a museum and had to walk 10 minutes out of my way to avoid the swarms.

UC Davis Chancellor Deems Use of Pepper Spray "Unacceptable"

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/20/us/california-occupy-pepperspray/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

(CNN) -- Under pressure to resign, the chancellor of the University of California, Davis, established a task force Saturday to look into an incident where a police officer sprayed seated protesters with pepper spray at point blank range.
Linda Katehi told CNN's Don Lemon that she considered the police action on Friday "unacceptable," but stressed she has no plans to step down.
"We really want to look into this very carefully and take action ... make sure that it will never happen again on our campus," she said.
Katehi said the task force made of faculty, students and staff will review the events and provide a report within 90 days.

"This report will help inform our policies and processes within the university administration and the Police Department to help us avoid similar outcomes in the future," she said.
One of the protesters hit by the spray told CNN's Lemon that she was still feeling some after-effects Saturday evening.
"I was shocked," said Sophia Kamran. "When students are sitting on the ground and no way of moving to be violent, being totally peaceful, I don't understand the use of pepper spray against them."
Occupy roundup: A fallout, a silent protest and a new encampment
A campus police officer, in a sweeping motion, sprayed protesters point blank on Friday before other officers moved in.
Eleven people were treated on site for effects of the yellow spray. Two of them were sent to the hospital, university officials said.
The incident set off a flood of comments on the school's Facebook page, most of them critical of police and the administration.
In response, Katehi first released a statement, then held a news conference Saturday.
"Yesterday was not a day that would make anyone on our campus proud," Katehi said in her statement.
At the news conference, she called the use of pepper spray "chilling."
"The use of pepper spray as shown on the video is chilling to us all and raises many questions about how best to handle situations like this," she said.
But Katehi refused calls from faculty members and others for her to step down, saying she did not violate campus policies.

The Davis Faculty Association, citing incidents at other campuses, demanded "that the chancellors of the University of California cease using police violence to repress nonviolent political protests."

It called for greater attention to cuts in state funding to education and rising tuition. Its board demanded Katehi resign, saying she exhibited "gross failure of leadership."

Saturday evening, as Katehi left campus, dozens of students sat cross-legged and with their arms linked in a silent protest.
A reporter asked Katehi, "Do you still feel threatened by the students?"
"No," she replied. "No."
Time: Watch video of police pepper-spraying and arresting students
UC Davis spokeswoman Claudia Morain told CNN that 25 tents were in place Friday afternoon -- despite fliers explaining the campus prohibits overnight camping. It does so for security and health reasons, Katehi said.
After written and verbal warnings, officers reminded the protesters they would be subject to arrest if they did not move their tents from the quad, Morain said. Many protesters did decide to remove their tents and equipment, officials said.
A group of about a dozen protesters sat on a path with their arms interlocked as police moved in to remove additional tents. Most of the protesters had their heads down.
At one point, protesters encircled the officers and blocked them from leaving, Morain said.
Cut off from backup, the officers determined the situation was not safe and asked people several times to make room, Morain said. One officer used pepper spray when a couple of protesters and some of the 200 bystanders moved in, she added.
A use of force review will "determine whether we made all the right decisions and handled it the way we should have handled it," Annette Spicuzza, chief of campus police, told reporters.

Critics took issue with the college's account, saying the seated protesters did not pose a threat to the officers.
"Without any provocation whatsoever, other than the bodies of these students sitting where they were on the ground, with their arms linked, police pepper-sprayed students" wrote Nathan Brown, an assistant professor in the college's English Department, in an open letter to the chancellor.
He said that police then used batons to separate the students, kneeled on their bodies and pushed their heads to the ground.

"When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats," Brown wrote.
He called on Katehi to resign.
"I call for your resignation because you are unfit to do your job. You are unfit to ensure the safety of students at UC Davis. In fact: you are the primary threat to the safety of students at UC Davis."

Eeesh. Talk about not realizing how it all fits together.

New income means income gains in the aggregate.

$1Tr income in year 1
$1.1Tr income in year 2

New income = 1.1 - 1 = $0.1tr

The funny thing about your little sniglet is that if you hold tax rates steady, and the only people who see gains in their income are the 1% or .1%, then over time they will proportionally pay more and more income taxes.

Since tax rates have been flat or even falling, then your own link proves the statement regarding who has been making most of the gains in income.
