Sticky this? For all recommends, comments, avoids, reviews, etc.

For starters, get 7 Little Words (http://itunes.apple.com/ph/app/7-little-words/id431434152?mt=8) from the Apple Store. This is the game if you're bored, stoned, or looking to get your brain challenged. I've mentioned in another thread that the game has a lot of in-app purchases but it is so worth it.

Other recommended game apps:
Stupid Zombies (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stupid-zombies/id412984175?mt=8) - all-encompassing price of 0.99 + option to buy air strikes
Word To Word (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/word-to-word-a-fun-addictive/id441894920?mt=8) - also with in-app purchases, but with an all-encompassing price of 2.99

Platform? Link? Since it's a mixed mobile apps thread, maybe we should put a link or which platform so it's easier to search for some consideration.

Wow, sub-Boutons-level discourse. Not sure where that came from. I will say this, however, "gaydroid?" really? If you are going to try to be provacative in an attempt to derail Venti's thread, then perhaps you should try a little harder, because that shows a horrible lack of creativity and really doesn't even work.

Venti, here is the link for android's Pulse (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alphonso.pulse&hl=en). Additionally, I LOVE CamScanner (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.intsig.camscanner&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5pb nRzaWcuY2Ftc2Nhbm5lciJd). Waze is a free GPS app in both the Apple store and Android Market and I think it's pretty damn snazzy. It's pretty interactive and is pretty cool on road trips. I highly recommend it.

If you're sick of carrying around all those damn loyalty cards from grocery and retail stores; you know, the ones you may have on your key chain, then you'll need to get Key Ring Reward Cards. It has most retail and grocery stores, but if it doesn't then you can store 'Others", too. Instead of digging for that card you just call it up on your phone and BAM. For grocery stores, it may have e-coupons which is kinda cool. It's free and in the Apple store and Android Market too.

There's the TouchTunes app in the Android market, don't know if @ Apple, where you can put tunes on the jukebox if you're ever anywhere with a TouchTunes Jukebox. It's pretty cool. You can pay through the app and select the tunes you want to hear without leaving your seat.

Then, if you have a newer Samsung TV that's on your home network via WiFi, there's SamsungRemote and Samsung Smartview app where you can control your TV from your phone.

Slow Shutter looks neat, and it's $1 today.

Slow Shutter Cam fixes that by allowing you to take photos with slow shutter speeds. You just set the shutter speed you want—even the indefinite "bulb" setting is an option—and the sensitivity to light, then start snapping your photo. Slow Shutter Cam will handle the rest.

That said, there are certainly drawbacks when using a camera in a smartphone or tablet—even with one as good as the iPhone's. You'll definitely get better, more compelling results with a DSLR (or even a point and shoot) but with a little work you can actually paint with light using Slow Shutter Cam. We couldn't find an proper test in an office filled with light (and no dark areas outdoors) but were able to verify that the app can create photos with light trails by creating an ugly photo inside of a cabinet. It was just necessary to adjust the sensitivity to a fairly low level and play around with some of the other settings. The default settings didn't work so well, but so long as you follow the instructions for painting with light, Slow Shutter Cam will get the job the done with a few adjustments.

My wife got me into using Cozi. This is a good family organizational app. It has a todo list, calendar, shopping list, and a journal (though I dont see a need for this). It has a common user login that the family shares and everyone sees any changes made. It syncs with google calendar, and you can specify who each calendar event is for. The shopping list can be subdivided (costco, HEB, Big Lots, etc). Most of it is functionality that already exists in one way or another, but it seems to pull everything together in a good way.

The wife uses allrecipies for something similar which has the added bonus of providing a "spinner" where you can select which ingredients you have as well as the type of meal and the time you have (Beef, Appetizer, ready in 20mins or less) and it will provide recipes which match that. She has an account online where she saves her favorite recipes too...

well I ride my bike a lot now and hate running, though my stock answer when someone asks if I would jog is "I'll only run when chased", so this would provide that if I ever wanted to take it up.

We don't have a splashtop 2. What does it do?

The login stuff is simpler, and the "Advanced" pane is no longer needed. You can access over 3g/whatever remotely without additional PIN, and they claim you can stream graphic intensive games now as proof of how much speedier it is. I don't play games so I can't testify to it, but the retina support is nice. I think the Android release is pretty imminent, they don't support the iPhone or Touch yet either, just the iPad. It was $2, which isn't much for what it does. I like it, thanks for the recommendation previously. I'll need to see how it works remotely over wifi of course, but so far so good.

Drachen
07-12-2012, 09:26 PM
Oh Ok, for us, splashtop was available over 3g/4g and they have a seperate (splashtop gamecontroller) which is supposedly optimized to play skyrim, civ5, etc through splashtop, but only for tegra 3 devices (though tegra 3 can be emulated).

I don't really play games either so I can't really tell you about all that. They have had a Splashtop HD out for a while which was optimized for the tablet screens (higher res).

It sounds like y'all are getting some of the stuff we've got. I am glad that I could help you out with that app. I do agree that it is awesome.

http://boingboing.net/2012/07/20/spacecraft-3d-nifty-robotic-s.html

I recently had a chance to visit NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory with Miles O'Brien. At the NASA center in Pasadena, engineers are readying for the long-anticipated landing of the Mars Curiosity rover on Aug. 5. During our visit, we met with the team behind a cool new iOS app from JPL: NASA's Spacecraft 3D, an augmented reality application that allows users to "learn about and interact with a variety of spacecraft that are used to explore our solar system, study Earth, and observe the universe."

Using a printed AR Target and the camera on your mobile device, you can get up close with these robotic explorers, see how they move, and learn about the the engineering feats used to expand our knowledge and understanding of space. Spacecraft 3D will be updated over time to include more of the amazing spacecraft that act as our robotic eyes on the earth, the solar system and beyond!

The app is really a ton of fun.

Android: Touchscreen keyboards, or even miniature ones, are not necessarily the ideal surface for getting things done. A physical keyboard and computer are just simply faster for many tasks, but there are a number of things they can't do that a mobile phone or tablet can. AirDroid bridges the gap by allowing you to control your device from pretty much any modern web browser.

A day after upgrading its cloud music player, Amazon has delivered a native Amazon Instant Video app for iPad (not iPhone or iPod Touch, yet) to the App Store. It has access to streaming Prime Instant Video for subscribers, as well as downloaded or streamed video on-demand. Other key features include access to the Watchlist / queue, and automatic access to any shows subscribed to with a Season Pass the day after they air on TV. The free app is available in the iTunes store right now, however like the sudden appearance of Hulu Plus on Apple TV yesterday we don't have any official PR to share just yet.

I just can't go back to not using swype, it is just SOOOOO SLOOOOOOW to have to pick up my finger in between letters. The only thing that I don't like about swipe is that it's microphone button does not go to the stock voice recognition software. edit: just read the swiftkey article and it seems that they got the message since it supports the continuous voice dictation from ICS.

Well its a fancy looking news aggregator

-You can select your news sources/categories via the red thingy located on the top right of your screen
- once you've done that, you can browse through your news by flipping up (swiping up) the pages
- and of course, you can add a widget on your screen

For a long time, FB was one of my favorite apps.

Then I realized it wasnt that convenient, even though it's a beautiful app

An RSS app/news aggregator should be able to give an overview of all your news sources in the same screen.

With FB, you have to browse through.

I think Pulse, Google Currents or Simple RSS are more convenient.

My favorite is swype, but it is free. If you don't like swype, the other, most popular keyboard is swiftkey (that is a paid one on the play store)

Carbon sucks...I go for Tweetings
Its faily new, so it will get all the advanded features in the future

It depends on the kind of user

As of now, Carbon is not for the power user or people who want to check all their stats, but for someone who just checks his tweets and wants to share or copy a tweet, its more than enough

It should have a built-in browserand a widget though, no excuse for that.

The best mobile Twitter app of all time is Tweetbot, but its only on iOS :bang

By the way, Falcon Widget app is amazing; there is a full fledged Falcon twitter app, but he widget alone has a lot of features :wow

Many fonts and colors to choose from.

The free version is good enough, but the paid version allows you to move the time/date/etc around

For example, if Venti doesnt want the time to hide Olivia Wilde's face in the lockscreen :D

Actually Helium is the best by far for this. You can sign in with your gmail account and transfer to any other device with helium.

I was hoping it would require a root, but it doesn't (still, root MFer).

It requires root if you want to use cloud services. Otherwise you have to connect to your computer via usb.

Ah yes, I knew I was missing something with regards to rooting (it asked me for Superuser access so I was confused).
