not much to say here just a great product beating out an overhyped overpriced product.
Beating stiff competition from Apple, the Asus EeePad Transformer Honeycomb tablet has been judged Product of The Year at the 2011 Trusted Reviews Awards Powered by Duracell.
in other news:
Samsung was victorious elsewhere, winning Mobile Phone of the Year for the Samsung Galaxy S2, triumphing against the Apple iPhone 4S and Orange San Francisco.

keep spinning fanboy:
In July 2009, an employee at Foxconn factory that makes Apple iPhones killed himself after his house was raided and he was allegedly beaten up following the disappearance of an iPhone prototype. The dead worker, Sun Danyong, 25, was responsible for sending iPhone prototypes to Apple. After he reported to his bosses that he was missing a unit early last week his apartment was then raided, and he was beaten and imprisoned by security guards, his friends told the Southern Metropolis Daily. Three days after reporting the missing iPhone Sun jumped from the 12th floor of his apartment building. [Source: Alexandra Topping The Guardian, July 22, 2009]
Jill Tan, an Apple spokeswoman in Hong Kong, issued a brief statement about the incident. “We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee...We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect.” Sun, like other employees dealing with Apple's new products, was under huge pressure to maintain a high-level of secrecy over the gadgets. The launches of new Apple products produce huge anticipation and excitement in fans and the media and the technology giant is constantly targeted by journalists, fans and its competitors who want to uncover its secrets.

and im NOT saying that they are more popular than iPhones, because they arent. just that they are definitely growing in popularity. not to mention the fact that apple releases only ONE type of phone, while there are a large number of very nice Android phones that are comparable to the GS2 made by several makers. the story could be very different if there was only one android phone, made by only one company.

I'm convinced. The tablet/laptop will basically do everything you would do with a regular laptop ie movies, music, internet, word processing and data entry with the exception of intense gaming. If not, the app store will most likely have a program that would suit you. The tablet is just as fast as well. I would just have to buy a memory stick and external harddrive and I'll be good. What more do you need that would convince you?

I mean that functionally a tablet isn't that different from my netbook/laptop that I have now (which can play almost any game on the market). Yes, the tablet is light, but for sheer portability, nothing beats a cell phone, and when I really need power, I have the 11" Alienware. So the tablet is kind of a between system right now that I don't think I could find a real use for. It's not different enough from a phone, and not powerful enough to compare to an actual laptop for the present.
I do expect that to change in the future, however, in the here and now, I personally can't find a need for a tablet. I don't know what the change will be that finally sells me on one, but I have a feeling I'll know it when I see it.

after a few months with the Transformer I almost got my money's worth already. Use it for email, browsing, news daily. Yes you can use your phone for this too, but you can also have a 15" monitor instead of a 27". it's all about size and comfort.
other 3 features I love: keyboard dock. It's so clumsy to write an email without a physical keyboard, the dock also re-charges the tablet :tu . Full HDMI mirroring, you can watch movies, browse, play games on your 50" from the comfort of your couch. And last, it comes with Splashtop which allows you to remote control your PC via WiFi with native resolutions. basically you not only have a tablet, you have your entire PC :tu

from a review of the original transformer. I think that this is what you are looking for.
Battery life for the tablet is listed as a 24.4-watt-hour lithium-polymer, rated for 9.5 hours of use. There's a battery slice tucked into the keyboard dock, too, which ramps up battery life to a massive 16 hours on paper, anyway

Reason is because of marketing. I've seen the Ipad plastered all over the TV, I have yet to see a Transfomer advertised on tv. I found out about the quad core here on Spurstalk.

There are other factors too. IIRC, the selection of actual apps specific to android tablets is pretty poor compared to the iPad.

It doesn't matter how good the marketing is, it's not like there aren't a shitload of people giving product reviews of the product online, if the product truly was a turd Apple could not hide it with the power of the internet people are more informed than ever in regards to consumer products. There are a shitload of Ipad Vs. Xoom, Galaxy Tab etc reviews on Youtube. Nobody has even put a dent in sales of the Ipad. The only tablet i see having a chance because of price point and distribution is the Kindle Fire but it still pales in comparison. Im not saying this shit blindly I bought a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and looked for reasons to keep it so I could have one Android to go with the Ipad 2 and it was a huge step backwards. After three days I took that shiny turd back.

You may be able to, but the iPad just does what it does very, very well and it is extremely easy to use. 2 years is a long time, and nothing has come close to it yet. I personally have no use for a tablet - I work at home, and my iPhone is plenty to get by with when I am not around my PC. But if I did get one it would be an iPad - I wouldn't really have to worry about anything but maybe buying some of the bunk "HD" editions of some games optimized for the larger screen, and all my videos are already in m4v. And a lot of people have iPhones already, so it is pretty tempting to just go with an iPad.

I believe I said I saw it as more of an entertainment machine than the Transformer, not that it was absolutely. It certainly is marketed more as one from what I have seen. I have indeed tried it, it's a neat little machine. My issue with Android tablets at this time has to do with the OS. It's not horrible but it's obvious it's still at the beginning stages. I expect when ICS comes out with Prime and more tablet specific/optimizaed apps come out I'll like it as much as I do Android for smartphones. If you purchase the Transformer with its keyboard dock, you will see there are some USB ports there and you are maybe wondering if you can using your 3G USB to connect to the Internet. I’ve tried a solution on XDA and the answer is Yes, you can.

No I havent tried out a Transformer other than toying with one in a store. My gripes about Android on a Tablet have nothing to do with the hardware side, there are several tablets with better specs, faster processors, more memory better cameras etc, but the overall experience is what those lack. I have seen people who have bought Xooms and other tablets buy one and take them back for some of the same reasons ive mentioned with my Galaxy Tab 10.1 experience. The haters will never know how bad they have it unless they actually own an Ipad or Ipad 2. I have owned both and wanted to keep the Galaxy Tab but it wasnt even close to something I would call a good product compared to my Ipad 2.

wow the misinformation
the Transformer can do everything the Ipad can do plus more.
the main difference is the Apps. itunes appstore is just a tad bit better in quality apps. But tbh, I was going through it on a friends ipad last week and Android market has really caught up to it. The advantage is almost non existent today. So again, that BS that Ipad is more entertainment machine is pure BS
I wholeheartedly disagree. Most of the android apps in the android app store are not even made to take advantage of tablets. I downloaded several Android apps for the Galaxy Tab that I had on the Ipad and was thoroughly disappointed. They just did not have the polish and the variety of apps still pales in comparison to the offerings on the Apple store. Although they do have a lot more apps now then they once did.
A newbie to these other tablets may certainly be happy with what their Android tablet does for them but once you have owned an Ipad 2 its pretty easy to see exactly how superior the Ipad is in overall experience. Sans camera (dont need it i have a good digital cam as well as decent one on my Iphone) Ipads actually can play flash with various browser apps, (flash is being discontinued by Adobe as the world evolves to HTML 5)
I would probably buy an Android tablet for a student if on a budget but for myself I tell people to save up a bit more and get an Ipad. For those saying that the Transformer is more like a laptop that sounds cool but I feel no need to replace my laptop. I would consider giving Android another try a little bit later down the road. Im not a bonafide hater. I would buy an Android phone after my contract with AT&T expires if they make one that gets good battery life which most of them currently lack. I have not read about battery life on the S2 but there would have to be quite an improvement in that regard for me to consider switching.
Heath Ledger
11-30-2011, 11:39 PM
disagree. A tablet is a tablet. The Asus is a tablet that "transforms" into a laptop thus it has an advantage over other tablets.
if you think the transformer is not going for Apple's market, you need to open your eyes.
and I agree with the many ppl here that say Apple Ipad is #1 mostly due to marketing. It really is not "far superior" than it's competitors.
Do you own or have you owned an Ipad? My guess is no. If your happy with the Transformer cool beans buy one, if you have one keep it I repeatedly hear the same theme from Ipad owners who give an Android tablet the edge overall. We've already established some tablets certainly have some better specs and if that is more important than your overall experience thats fine the Transformer will not ever put a dent into Ipad sales. Everyone in the Tablet game would love to have half the success the first Ipad had and nobody is even close to that in terms of sell thru.
Every generation of Ipads will continue to get better and everyone else is just chasing them but eats their dust. Love it or hate it these are the facts.

How do you know? I use it quite a lot during a course of a day, including GPS, browsing, and calling. And more reputable reviews of the phone are showing much more battery life so why you'd trust some bootleg blog over several other sources I don't know.
"The story of the Galaxy S II's battery life cannot be told without returning to its luscious screen. Being an OLED panel, the 4.3-inch display here doesn't use one single backlight as LCD screens do, and instead only illuminates the pixels that are needed to actively display content. This is the reason why it can generate truer blacks than any backlit panel, but it also permits the user to optimize battery life by doing such things as switching to a darker wallpaper or reading ebooks against a black background. We didn't actually bother with such tweaks, we were too busy exploring every one of the myriad features on this phone, but the option's there as an extra dimension of obsessive control if you care for it. As to the Galaxy S II's actual endurance, we found it highly competitive with the latest batch of Android phones. After 20 hours, half of which were filled with the above tinkering and exploration, we managed to drag the Galaxy S II down to 15 percent of its original charge. This was with our usual push notification suppliers, Gmail and Twitter, running in the background and while constantly connected to our WiFi network. "

Here in Vancouver, we have four locations (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/metrotown-apple-store-live-on-apple-com-grand-opening-sept-24th-10am/) (with a rumoured fifth location coming (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/apple-store-opening-in-downtown-vancouver-on-robson-and-burrard-in-2012/)) for a population of roughly 578,000 people (just the city, not the entire GVRD). Each location is no more than 25 minutes away from the next. You can never have enough Apple Stores.
Riverside is the sixth largest city in California but they have one thing missing–an Apple Store. So what’s a city to do? Mayor Ron Loveridge and his City Council decided to spend $3500 to make a video showcasing the love they have for Apple products and how they would mutually benefit if Apple setup a retail shop there. There are three other Apple Stores nearby, but the closest is 40 kilometres (25 miles) away, clearly too far for Riverside.
Check out the video below–is Riverside worthy of an Apple Store (nice choice of Gary Glitter’s ‘The Hey Song’)?

Never claimed they won't catch up, BUT, there's a symbiosis as far as market share is concerned... choosing to develop for 70% or 30% of the market is a fairly easy decision.
Not hating, but Android does need to provide a better API to make it simpler to just rework the interface from phone->tablet, which is something Apple has done well in their SDK. I haven't looked at the ICS SDK yet, but if that's there, that's going to be the avenue.

Nope. The tablet API only showed up in Honeycomb, and Honeycomb didn't officially make it to a lot of phones. That's why ICS is important, because it merges the API on a single OS targeted both at phone and tablet. Now, if you target ICS, you can code towards both the tablet and phone.

Nope again. What Apple did right in iOS is to use resolution-independent UI from the get go, because they wanted to support rotation-aware apps. That actually ended up being the right call, because now the same concept expands to different screen resolutions.
Took us just a single day to have an universal version of our app that works natively both on iPad and iPhone. As long as you define how things are laid-out, your app just works, regardless of the screen size or whether it's retina or not.

that is exactly what I said. You have 2 choices let your Froyo app run in Honeycomb, or redo the GUI part to use Honeycomb optimized tablet APIs. Either way it is not a major problem. It's not like you are redoing your entire app

that is exactly what I said. You have 2 choices let your Froyo app run in Honeycomb, or redo the GUI part to use Honeycomb optimized tablet APIs. Either way it is not a major problem. It's not like you are redoing your entire app
Which is exactly what I was pointing out. You don't have to "redo" pretty much anything in iOS. As long as you wrote the app to be resolution-agnostic, and you mark the app iPad compatible, the OS will handle the UI to be tablet-native on a tablet, and phone-native on a phone. You write against the exact same API.
which is the case in Android. Again, a Froyo app will run in Honeycomb as is.
But it won't use tablet APIs... it's like non-universal iPhone apps running on the iPad.

Okay, not a developer, but I will say this. When iOS 4 came out, you could tell which apps were developed with iOS 4 and the Retina screen in mind and which ones weren't. I saw a lot of fuzzy icons and not so sharp displays for a few months while everyone caught up. Some apps improved vastly in terms of display when they added the little "updated for iOS 4 and Retina display" to the description.
Now that has to do with just the visual, but I'm sure it is a little part of developing on iOS vs Android that ElNono is trying to get at.

I have to say if the TP is as successful as the original, I could see Asus leading the android charge. They are coming out with a Tegra 3 phone next year and they are (at least IMHO) synonymous with quality. When I built computers, I used Asus components wherever possible. My current and previous laptops were asus and run great. If that quality and innovation continues to carry over to the mobile side, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

I don't agree that you can call an iOS phone app, a tablet app too. It's either a phone app that also runs on tablet, or a tablet app that also runs on phone. IMO those are 2 different platforms. A true tablet app is designed for the tablet from the groudn up.

:lol Nope. You couldn't possibly have a tablet-UI when the API isn't there. That's exactly what ICS brings to the table.

It doesn't have to be like that. And certainly, that's the big plus you're getting for free here. The users get two different experiences, but the developer only had to write towards one API. And it's a big reason why there's so many native iPad apps out there.
That's why it's called universal, as opposed to a phone app. It doesn't just works on both, but they actually behave distinctly on both, but it's handled entirely by the system.
For example, when you display a popup menu, the API is exactly the same, but on the tablet it will display on a popup, where on the phone it will be a menu that slides from the bottom. Or when printing, you'll get the print options in a popup on the tablet, where it takes you to another screen in the phone. It's all handed by the system, and it's a time saver, because it does what's natural for that device, and I don't have to sit down and re-invent the wheel. Now, if you want to customize per device, you can do that too.
The convergence of APIs on ICS will hopefully prompt to the same kind of "smarts" on Android.

I am no expert on the subject, but the way I understand it this is what ICS' "Fragments" API brings to the table.

Actually, the introduction of the retina display is a good example. Everything still worked natively, no scaling on fonts, system controls, etc. The only thing that required a change was that if you used a custom image/icon/bitmap, you needed to include one with twice the resolution and name it <image>@2x.png.
That's it. You didn't even need to change the filenames on the program. The API automatically appends and uses the @2x if it's on a retina display and the file is there, otherwise it falls back to whatever was there and scales it.

I guess a big ol' Rick Perry is in order here (oops). I couldn't remember if this was discussed in this thread or not. I will defer to you as to how much it will help, though some of the android developers that I know on other forums seem to be quite excited by it.

Now that you mentioned it I own/owned many Asus products:
- Motherboard for comp in '05
- My first laptop in '06
- My second laptop in '09
- My 23" LED monitor, motherboard for my current PC
- My current wireless N router
Solid products, only thing on that list that sucks balls is my router. Laptops received door-to-door service for any issue, and now warranty for laptop is 2 years standard.

no. IMO phone and tablet are 2 different platforms. Thus if you really want a true tablet app you need to build it specifically for tablet.
Main reasoning is the real estate difference and the whole experience is different, gestures, etc.

They are two different platforms. But, what if the OS handled the difference for you? On the tablet, you get the extra real-estate, gestures and the whole tablet experience. On the phone you get the phone experience. Neat, uh?

I also forgot to mention the computing power. tablets are starting to be monsters and pulling ahead of phones. even more need to have true tablet apps that take advantage of this.
IMO developers will always have 3 choices:
1) make an app that will run on both
2) make a phone app
3) make a tablet app

Why do you say this? everything that is in a tablet is going into phones.

what do you consider a bread and butter phone? tablet? I was comparing a monster phone to a monster tablet. A bread and butter tablet would be like a nook or kindle and mid-range phones can compete with those.

You have to write it anyways, might as well write it against an API that let you run on both. If the phone isn't up to par right now in processing speed, you can just turn the feature off on the phone until they do.
We've done this with a few features, but as performance on phones increased dramatically, we just turned those back on now. Which, again, is the nice thing about targeting a single API, and the reasons Android devs are salivating at ICS. You just flip a switch.

Man, talk about not being able to catch a break. After launching what was largely considered the first Android tablet worth drooling over at AsiaD, ASUS has ran into every conceivable issue in the months since. Delays, on-again / off-again claims about GPS and now, a locked bootloader that has the vocal Android modding community all sorts of angry. The primary issue here is that the Prime is a WiFi-only device, which leaves little room for ASUS to justify its decision to thwart the use of uncertified ROMs. Of course, HTC has faced similar pressures in the past, and its decision to cut loose of the locked bootloader chains won it universal praise from a universal audience. Time for ASUS to step up and do likewise?
