That is one of the conclusions of a rather intensive research project undertaken by a proffessor and a collection of students and former students.

Fascinating stuff. It almost makes me want to apply for the CIA.

The entire article is rather long and worth reading, here is a part of it.

....Digging into China’s nuclear tunnels
By William Wan | The Washington Post – 23 hrs ago......Georgetown University's Professor Phillip A. Karber spent the Cold War as a top strategist reporting directly to the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. (The Washington Post …more ) less

....
Share78EmailPrint......The Chinese have called it their “Underground Great Wall” — a vast network of tunnels designed to hide their country’s increasingly sophisticated missile and nuclear arsenal.

For the past three years, a small band of obsessively dedicated students at Georgetown University has called it something else: homework.

Led by their hard-charging professor, a former top Pentagon official, they have translated hundreds of documents, combed through satellite imagery, obtained restricted Chinese military documents and waded through hundreds of gigabytes of online data.

The result of their effort? The largest body of public knowledge about thousands of miles of tunnels dug by the Second Artillery Corps, a secretive branch of the Chinese military in charge of protecting and deploying its ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads.

The study is yet to be released, but already it has sparked a congressional hearing and been circulated among top officials in the Pentagon, including the Air Force vice chief of staff.

Most of the attention has focused on the 363-page study’s provocative conclusion — that China’s nuclear arsenal could be many times larger than the well-established estimates of arms-control experts.

(Graphic: Evidence of China’s nuclear storage system)

“It’s not quite a bombshell, but those thoughts and estimates are being checked against what people think they know based on classified information,” said a Defense Department strategist who would discuss the study only on the condition of anonymity.

Ah China, the ever-present enigma. Can't say that this surprises me one bit. What I'd hope is that the Administration takes something meaningful away from this with respect to the Iranian situation. I can't elaborate, but there's a clear and present pattern emerging here. (Hint: Include in your consideration the nuclear testing in North Korea)

I'm reasonably sure I get what you are driving at.

China would abandon Iran in a heartbeat if they thought it were in their interest to do so. The Chinese have also said some pretty blunt things to Iran about their nuclear ambitions, somewhat at odds with their covert assistance.

Iran may find itself bereft of friends faster than it thinks, if the EU/US threaten import tariffs on Chinese goods in response to Chinese support of Iranian nuclear weapons programs.

I'm not sure that Chinese stategic thinking has really encapsulated the results of a nuclear-armed Iran yet. If they had, the Chinese would be on board already, given their need for hydrocarbons.

Former Pakistani General was a guest on the alex jones show yesterday, talked about how we basically pushed pakistan under the wing of china with that attack and how any future war against world powers will almost surely turn nuclear. Scary shit to think about, but I don't doubt it.

+(1 x 10^15)

For people who claim to be "free thinkers" they have astonishingly similar worldviews.

Ironically, if there really was some sort of vast evil conspiracy, and Alex Jones was really telling the "truth" about it, he would be long since dead. His very existance is proof that he is full of shit.

It saddens me to see that Mr. Jones' personal brand of hate and stupidity has infected a whole new generation of kids.

Not that I can completely blame the kids attracted to this. It isn't their fault that the educational system hasn't taught them critical thinking.

The only bright spot is that someday, a lot of them will realize that they have been lied to by AJ and Infowars.com (TM). Hopefully they won't have spent too much evil fiat money in the giftshop.

Pakistan's ONLY interest is in countering Indian power.

Given Pakistani intelligence ties to radical muslim groups, and China's problems with muslim seperatists, any flowering of that relationship will be shallow, and likely short-lived.

Pakistan's moribund economy vis a vis India's means that India can ringfence the shit out of them, especially given the pretty solid proof that IA was directly involved in the Mumbai attacks. Fuck, they have recordings where a Paki intelligence officer directly ordered the killing of a Mexican national during the attack.

Pakistan has a whole set of problems, and needs the U.S. as much as we need them.

As much as I like the Pakistani people I have met, their country is a festering extremist shithole of anti-American paranoia and militant religious nutjobs.

The corrupt government clings to power with our assistance, and that needs to stop.

We need to get out of Afghanistan so that we don't have to rely on such a partner anymore.

Given that we essentially have to pick between India and Pakistan, the choice of partners in the region is pretty clear.

I somewhat agree that, if you were to look at everything in a neutral light, it makes a helluva lot more sense to ally with India than Pakistan.

No...Cain didn't know China was a nuclear power

Herman Cain Worried About China ‘Develop(ing) Nuclear Capability,’ Despite 50-Year Nuclear Program

The post-sexual harassment Herman Cain media blitz that has kept up all week has done a great deal to understand the workings of the Cain campaign in crisis, but there is one other element of Cain’s platform that seems to be getting hit the hardest by his exposure to the press: his foreign policy credentials. Tonight on The O’Reilly Factor, Cain essentially said he was ready to declare war on Iran; last night on PBS’s Newshour, he told Judy Woodruff he suspected China was “trying to develop nuclear capability,” despite having nuclear weapons since 1964.

Woodruff began the interview asking whether China was “a potential military threat to the United States” in Cain’s eyes. Cain answered in the affirmative, and responded that in order to neutralize the threat, he would “outgrow China” economically. Then he noted that the threat was assuaged significantly by the fact that “we already have superiority in terms of our military capability.” “I plan to get away from making cutting our defense a priority,” he noted, stating his motto as “peace through strength and clarity.” He then turned to the threat he saw he would need to stop: “they’ve indicated that they’re trying to develop nuclear capability and they want to develop more aircraft carriers like we have.”

The problem with this claim, of course, is that China is not exactly “trying” to develop nuclear capability any more than America is– they staged their first nuclear weapons test in 1964. Cain didn’t clarify what he meant by that phrase, but it certainly doesn’t make him look particularly knowledgeable to not know that China has nuclear weapons. Woodruff, on her part, did not comment on his statements and moved on to another topic, seemingly unaware of the fact that Cain’s statement seemed to belie the fact that he had no idea that China was a nuclear nation, and that this is common knowledge in the political world

And why do we care? Seriously. Do you expect a presidential candidate to be 100% knowledgeable of world events? They have people to brief them of facts as they develop. It is such old news when China became a nuclear power, and has never to my knowledge been reason to remind people.

How many people know that China tested their first bomb in 1964? that is how old this news is. What reason has there been to remind people thy are a nuclear power?

This guy was not interested in politics as a game plan from birth like so many others seem to be. Yes. I am serious that I don't expect a president to be all knowing. I do however expect him to be surrounded by good advisers, and make sound decisions from that.
