Damnit i hate this shit! Just had an earthquake in cali again at 1:55pm :( Dude i cant even hide under a rock...i think there is gona be a big one soon.
They are talking about aftershocks...and i just think of mexico how the earthquake was smaller than its aftershocks.

My husband was in San Diego when the one hit on Sunday. Just he and another former Californian stayed in the convention room while everyone else ran out of the building. Because they knew it was a minor one.

Mexico's buildings, I'm sure, aren't earthquake proof, but still...

Honestly, I don't think the San Andreas will be the big one. There's a fault line that runs through Newport Beach and if that thing ever triggers, it's gonna level that city since it's mostly built on land fill.

There was a 7.2 (I think) quake yesterday off the coast that actually generated a small tsunami. It's geting kind of hairy.

Earthquakes never bothered me. Tornados scare me more. However, when we lived in San Francisco, it used to make me very nervous to be stuck in traffic on the Golden Gate and/or Bay Bridge.

My sister just called me - she lives in Burbank - and told me that there was just a 5.4 earthquake there. She's coming to SA to visit tomorrow and hopes that this isn't a prelude to a larger earthquake while she's gone.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but y'all or Northern CA are due for one :(

The only one that really made me nervous was the Whittier earthquake and I was in Corona at the time. That was one I was seriously considering getting under my desk. We were in SF during the Northridge one (and not in SF during the Loma-Prieta quake, thank goodness), but it took forever to get through to my sister who lives in Canoga Park after Northridge. I remember turning on my tv and seeing the collapsed 5 freeway and thinking, "oh shit!"

I was in California - Salinas to be exact - during the summer before the Loma Prieta quake, and I remember at least 2 4+ quakes that summer. Those weren't bad by any means, but it was really eerie because those were my first and to this point only quakes. But no one even batted an eye when those happened.

I think it was really fucking stupid to build a stacked freeway system like that in California, I just didn't understand it.

Shelly

I think the tsunami warning was for Northern CA and Oregon. Or was there another one issued?

MannyIsGod
06-16-2005, 04:28 PM
it was for N CA. Apparently the Tsunami generated was only 10 inches high, so it wasn't a big deal and the systems did work. However, apparently the system didn't work in WA where they should have gotten the warning as well but didn't. People don't want to fuck around after the Indonesian wave.

We moved to SF about 4 years after that and at that time they STILL hadn't finished fixing the freeway.

Yeah, small ones never bothered me, but once that get over 6, there's gonna be some damage. And what a lot of people don't realize that each point it goes up (ie..6.1 to 6.2) it's 10 times that stronger.

Shelly

So much for Crecent City predicting quakes.

The problem is, there are so many fault lines that they don't know about. IIRC, they didn't even know about the Northridge one, but I may be wrong.

MAINSHOCK
Magnitude : 5.3 Ml
Time : 16 Jun 2005 01:53:25 PM PDT
: 16 Jun 2005 20:53:25 UTC
Coordinates : 34 deg. 3.49 min. N, 117 deg. 0.44 min. W
2 mi. ( 4 km) NE of Yucaipa, CA
16 mi. ( 26 km) ESE of San Bernardino, CA
Event ID : 14155260

STRONG AFTERSHOCKS (Magnitude 5 and larger) -

At this time (immediately after the mainshock) the probability of a strong and possibly damaging aftershock IN THE NEXT 7 DAYS is approximately 10 PERCENT.
EARTHQUAKES LARGER THAN THE MAINSHOCK -

Most likely, the recent mainshock will be the largest in the sequence. However, there is a small chance (APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 10 PERCENT) of an earthquake equal to or larger than this mainshock in the next 7 days.
WEAK AFTERSHOCKS (Magnitude 3 to 5) -

In addition, approximately 3 to 15 SMALL AFTERSHOCKS are expected in the same 7-DAY PERIOD and may be felt locally.

This probability report is based on the statistics of aftershocks typical for California. This is not an exact prediction, but only a rough guide to expected aftershock activity. This probability report may be revised as more information becomes available.

it came down here as well in SO CAL.

All of the owners got together after we got the call, getting ready to evacuate the fairgrounds.

About 5 minutes before we did, they cancelled the warning.

All of it sucked, since it was RIGHT after game 3 and I was pissed so standing out there worrying about a goddamn Tsunami wasn't my idea of a good tuesday night.

I had such high hopes that Coach K was going to go out to LA last summer and pull a Tark...getting fired just a few games into the NBA season. Quin Snyder would quit at Mizzou and go run the Dookies into the ground. Coach K could then try to build up some scrub school like Cal State Northridge into a powerhouse for the rest of his career.

MannyIsGod

Actually, a string of moderate earthquakes is probably a good thing because it relieves pressure on the faults. I'd be more worried with a long period of no activity.

That's not true at all. That's a very common myth that had been published as fact for a long time. But then was found to be untrue.

MannyIsGod
06-17-2005, 10:21 AM
When was it found to be untrue?

Kori Ellis
06-17-2005, 10:26 AM
During the time of the 1994 earthquake in Northridge, a lot of studies came out showing that a string of moderate quakes does not make it any less likely that a big quake is coming.

It's almost impossible for them to know if the string of quakes are aftershocks, preshocks or have nothing to do with an earthquake.

The week before the 7.0 Northridge quake, we had tons of small earthquakes (mostly in the 2.0 - 4.0 range). Some people thought that meant that there wouldn't be a big one. Then the 7.0 came, and they concluded that those must have been preshocks (but they don't really know). After that quake, we had after shocks in the 5.0 range -- a lot of them. Some of them were found to not even be aftershocks.

So what I'm saying is that it's pretty much still a guessing game with earthquakes. A lot of studies came out after that time, showing that there's no pattern of small earthquakes on the fault line relieving any pressure and making a bigger quake less likely.

MannyIsGod
06-17-2005, 10:29 AM
No, thats not what I'm saying. I'm saying that having small or moderate earthquakes is more favorable to having no activity. When you have no activity, there is pressure building up on the faults. While you can't prevent the big ones from happening regardless of the little ones, if you don't have the little ones the likely hood of a major quake occouring goes up.

MannyIsGod

Damn you and your editing :lol

I read a bunch yesterday, but this was the closest I could find to what you were talking about

Q: Can you prevent large earthquakes by making lots of small ones, or by "lubricating" the fault with water?

A: Seismologists have observed that for every magnitude 6 earthquake there are
10 of magnitude 5, 100 of magnitude 4, 1,000 of magnitude 3, and so forth as
the events get smaller and smaller. This sounds like a lot of small earthquakes,
but there are never enough small ones to eliminate the occasional large event.
It would take 32 magnitude 5's, 1000 magnitude 4's, 32,000 magnitude 3's to
equal the energy of one magnitude 6 event. So, even though we always record
many more small events than large ones, there are never enough to eliminate the
need for the occasional large earthquake.

As for "lubricating" faults with water or some other substance, injecting high
pressure fluids deep into the ground is known to be able to trigger earthquakes
to occur sooner than would have been the case without the injection. However this
would be a dangerous pursuit in any populated area, as one might trigger a damaging
earthquake.

I read a lot about it in 1994 after that quake. It (during the quake) was the only time in my life that I ever thought I was going to die. But I guess being 2 blocks from the epicenter of a major quake will do that to you.

Kori do you remember that one building that basically collapsed and people were crawling to get out of Oone of my teachers in elementary lived in that building and a few other friends of mine... i remember driving around with my mom and seeing so many red tagged homes it was scary.

That was about one block away from the apartment building where I lived at the time. :wow
