I just hope its not an attempt to light a match under RJs ass. If anything it will motivate him to do even less.

RJ was great last year at the beginning of the season. The problem with lighting a fire under someone is that it won't last for six months.

Sign Caron Butler, and use trade finder to dump RJ for a big. I think like pop
either we'll win it or not.

Do...not...want...

Taking a classic vehicle, and strapping on all sorts of parts to modify it, doesn't change the fact that the car, while still beautiful and strong, cannot keep up with the ever so changing competition around it. New models everywhere are getting faster. I hope there are plans somewhere in the FO to look into a whole new engine altogether at this point. Love our core guys, but adding things like Vince Carter or Caron Butler will do nothing to make this vehicle cross the finish line before anyone else. Likewise, this will also ensure that James Anderson won't be developed under coach Pop & just warm the bench.

As with week leading to every free agency period, difficult to separate teams' true intentions from smoke screen at this point.

Can someone verify whats going on with Butler? On radio they made it seem like he was already signed, but never once said he was. any details people?
also heard were going after Vince Carter. Not sure what to think of any of this

SenorSpur

This is tough to believe. If the Spurs brass is adamant about getter more tough-minded and defensive-oriented, Vince Carter does NOTHING to help in either area. Carter is a dog player, with no heart and very little game left. At this stage of his decline, he's probably a worse overall player than RJ.

Exactly.

RJ may not fit the system, but VC could potentially break it.

Leetonidas

VC/Butler are both better than RJ, and if the Spurs are looking at wing players it might mean they either have a deal in the works for a big that includes RJ or they're going to amnesty him. Either way, it's hard to tell what the Spurs are ever doing during these periods because what we hear through the rumor mill almost always turns out to not be true

VC/Butler are both better than RJ,

You've obviously not seen much of VC this season or two. The guy is a shell of himself. He was once a very skilled, and feared athletic scorer with no heart. Now, he's just an old declining player with no heart. He's done.

Fireball
12-05-2011, 12:59 PM
Using the football analogy ... Vince Carter does not even jump on the pile after the play is over. Even RJ has more competitive spirit. Carter would demand more shots, but seeing him the last two seasons showed, that he takes mostly bad shots.

This must be smokescreen ...

Will someone please take away all alcoholic beverages from Pop and RC!?!

At this stage in his career VC is a below average player and the only thing going for him is is name. Spurs could get a much younger and better player far cheaper...

Priceless comments in here. I think even at this stage VC is probably a better offensive player than RJ. He is not a bad passer and can actually post a bit when motivated. However RJ is a much better defender (he is no Bowen, but VC is trash on that end) and has more athleticism left in him at this point than Carter does.

I dont like any of the 3 at this spoint in their careers (except Caron if he is healthy) But right now Luke's boyfriend is better than these guys. Battier would be a good get kinda like a taller Bowen ...

Bring on VC. I think people are forgetting just how bad RJ was in the playoffs last year. Although I'm not jumping for joy at the names I'm hearing tossed about as potential free agent signings, I think all of them are better options than RJ.

RJ is the least competitive player to ever don a Spurs jersey.

Vince Carter has never been much more than a spot-up shooter, like Ray Allen only not quite as good a shooter as Allen. We will always have one of those on our roster, we have one now named Gary Neal, who is younger and more athletic. We don't need Carter. We need shooters who can also play good defense.

Can someone tell me what the strategy is here? recruiting for a SF (Butler, Carter, Howard) seems to be more than smokescreen, why would Butler and Howard visit SA then?

Assuming the idea is to dump RJ now and replace him with a servicable SF, how's that going to happen? Through a trade or amnesty plus FA ? I just don't get it

If this is true, it certainly couldn't be because Finley needs the cash. After all, he's still getting 5mil per year from Cubes until 2015.

Well, since it came directly from Parker, there are zero doubts than Finley is at Spurs facility. He is practicing with the young guys and Tim. Manu and Tiago will start practicing tomorrow. However, it doesn't mean Spurs will offer him a contract.

Chomag
12-05-2011, 05:06 PM
Well damn... if Spurs are going for these past their prime players for their FA pick ups they should at least go with one that has an actual heart like Shane Battier. He may have lost allot of his abilities but at least you know you will get 100% of what he has from the guy

TD 21
12-05-2011, 06:11 PM
I doubt they're "pursuing" Carter. What they're probably doing is their due diligence. In other words, if they do what it appears they're on the verge of doing, which is trade Jefferson and parts for a big, then they'll need a veteran SF and they'll have limited financial resources with which to work. So it makes sense to at least touch base with the agent for virtually any half decent player capable of playing the position, even if the player is a fourth or fifth option. Because if it comes right down to it and they fail to sign Butler, Howard, Evans, etc., who's going to say no to Carter if the alternatives at that point are Finley, Simmons and Udoka?

Understand.

Still, I can't get his motive. Anyone who watched Finley's brief cameo appearance for the Celtics, in the 2010 NBA playoffs, would've clearly seen that this guy is way past done. And he should know it too.

After watching helplessly as Finley got scored on via dribble drives on two consecutive possessions, Doc Rivers called timeout and mercifully took him out of the game. He never played another minute in a C's uniform.
